The Indianapolis Speedrome has been a tradition on the SE side of Indianapolis since the 1940's. The paved 1/5 mile "short track" is the home to racing several nights each week, starting in March and going through to mid-November.
Originally the track was designed for the open wheeled "Midget" cars that really got popular after the Second World War. Now the track is more widely known for stock cars and their incredible Figure-8 racing.
The Figure-8's are thrilling as the drivers race diagonally through the infield, trying to avoid each other at the "intersection." Each year a three-hour World Figure-8 endurance race is held that draws cars and fans from across the US.
Since the track is small, you can see the action from virtually any seat in the house. Even from the bottom row, as the stands are mounted on risers. The stands circle around 3/4 of the track. The front straightaway seats are "folding chairs" and are reserved for most events, at a higher price. Since the track begins races during the summer at 7PM, the setting sun makes the first hour a blinding affair for those setting in those seats.
The Speedrome is located at the NW corner of Brookville Rd. and Kitley Ave., just about one half mile west of I-465, on the SE side of Indianapolis. Admission runs $10 and up for most events.
PROS: Good racing, easy to see the action
CONS: Reserved seats are pricey and not worthwhile.
