Ok, so it's not really for locals only, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a tourist wandering inside this cozy venue. This place has history, and it's been an absolute staple for the obscure and less-well-known music-lovers for decades.

Pros: Amazing view from anywhere in the venue

Cons: Hard to find parking near the venue

I had never been to the Independent until last week and had a great time. The venue is much smaller than it looks from the outside, but this creates an intimate atmosphere that really enhances the shows.

This is your standard black box of a night concert spot. It's mostly host to offbeat/indie bands. I saw RJD2 there last week, and it was OK. One thing I thought was weird was that the bathroom/coat check is on the complete opposite side o the entrance and near the stage - pretty hard to get to when the place is packed full of people. The Independent has been around for a while. It's cool to hang out and get a drink at someplace like Nopa first.

Went here to see Mike Doughty play. Got there a little early, got some drinks, got great standing room in front of the stage, had a blast.

The speakers were well tuned, things were clear, loud, but not overly so (didn't wear earplugs and didn't feel awful for not wearing them). The beer was good & cold, and filled the cup really well -- almost worth the $5.

Only downside is the same issue I have with most SF spots -- zero parking. The concert was on a Sunday night, and we were still forced to drive around for about 30 minutes looking for a space, and ended up having to walk eight blocks anyway. But if someone else is driving, I'd be happy to go back!

PROS: Great, intimate venue
CONS: Zero parking, just like the rest of SF.

I have been here a few times, once to see Erasure and another time to see Esthero. Both times were very fun, and I enjoyed the atmosphere. When I went to see Esthero, there were tables set up for the acoustic set, in order to show a lounge type of aura. Drinks are cheap as well!

The Independent has amazing sight lines from all areas of the venue and the most amazing sound system in the Bay Area. You will be hard pressed to find a club that is going to have this level of talent, but in the size of an intimate
