I went to Royal Claytons to watch the World Cup. I guess they had underestimated how many people would be attending as they only had 4 people on staff for about the 150 people that showed up. Needless to say it was a bit slow and took 45 minutes to get a beer. However, the pub grub was pretty decent and I'm willing to give them a second try. However, just know that a lot of the beers on menu are out and the selection otherwise is a bit limited... even when you're the first customers of the day.

Royal Clayton's has Happy Hour every day from 4-7. There's everything from discounted house wine to specialty cocktails like bloody marys. The bloody I enjoyed was quite spicy. And they even made it vegetarian by not adding Worcestershire sauce.

There are huge pizzas on the HH menu but I opted to get a pork sandwich from their regular menu. Options include salad with no additional cost. I love that. And it was a great salad too, which went well with the not-overly-sweet BBQ sauce in my sandwich.

You can get some good eatin down south style food. Everything here sticks to your ribs and makes you think of good country eating. Service here is like your own kitchen.

is it a pub or dining venue... unfortunately right now it does neither well. The service is lousy, rarely do they have wines available as listed, the food... well, lets just say their Shepard's Pie is more like Menudo (-tripe) with thickening agent. They need to decide whether they are going to be a fantastic English pub and get some help with their menu- pasties, sausage rolls, 'ploughman's lunch', Shepard's Pie (with ground beef), fish sticks etc. OR revamp the place and drop the pub concept and cater to the people who live around there with a great organic cafe (like Bloom on Pico). Either way, if your staff are not happy... neither are your customers.

Pros: at least there is somewhere to eat in downtown East; beer selection is good

Cons: poor food, service and not good value

I went here with a group of friends for dinner. I had made reservations a week prior, I was the last person in my group to arrive and found out they did not have the reservation, luckily they were able to accommodate us, I would have been REALLY upset had they not, and I told them. The place itself it pretty cool, very industrial, inside and out. The food too was pretty industrial, not very good, Our server was a good sport as we were a demanding group - he did a good job of attending to us.

The new menu is fantastic! I live across the street and have had everything on both menus at least twice. I particularly love the halibut served over sauteed spinach. And the terrific varieties of pizza--don't miss "the Genoa"--make it terrific for take-out, too. Happily, the Caesar salad is never over-dressed.
Sunday afternoons, however, are hell: a DJ spins immensely irritating music. And late at night, I pity the wait staff: they have to endure a lot of young drunks with a sense of entitlement. I like to go slightly before the dinner hour (quieter) or on Thursdays for jazz.

The bar is great, but the food and service is absolutely terrible. We were not asked to be seated upon entering, which is OK. The problem was that we sat right next to the waitress station and received no service for 15 minutes. The waitress walked by us at least 6 times. The bar was not busy at all; she was just serving one large table. She refused to make eye contact and had complete attitude. We finally left the table and grabbed seats at the bar. The bar tender was very good (prompt & friendly). Unfortunately, the food was terrible. Stay away from the barbequed pork sandwich?its serviced cold without barbeque sauce on it. The Turkey club sandwich was also very bland. This place has a lot of potential. The vibe of the bar is great. I am not sure why the owners are not reorganizing the staff that handles the service and food. I have been to Royal Claytons twice and have decided not to go back for food. However, I will go back for drinks as the vibe of the bar is great.

hey,
All the reviews for this place seemed pretty scathing but I went there any ways because it's new and I wanted to see what's up for myself. They were out of a bunch of beers and they ended happy hour at 6 -unlike the 7 o'clock that was claimed here on city search. That was two ticks but I was still pretty down with this spot because I love British stuff.

They have tons of Brit food including "bubble and sqeak" (although made with crab instead of beef or lamb) and they have big giant metal mugs that hold over 2 pints of beer. If you live in the area and want some shepards pie and a giant beer this is a great spot. If you're going to sit down with your wifey and have a bottle of wine and pasta this probably isn't the place.

Living in the Toy Loft Building, I have been to Royal Claytons a number of times. Each time has been a terrible experince, but I keep telling myself that it will be better next time; I AM NO LONGER GOING TO EAT OR DRINK HERE.

Besides having mediocre food, Royal Claytons has the WORST SERVICE of any resturant or bar that I have been to in LA. I understand that they probably only hire flakiy out of work actors for the job, but this is still not any excuse for the kind of treatment that I have recieved at this place. Not only have I had servers refuse to open beers for me (as well as serving it in the wrong type of glasswear), but I have waited for 20+ minuates at the bar to be asked if I want another drink when I have been the only person at the bar and there have been 4 servers standing around talking to each other (or on their cel phones).

The music is too loud and they are many times out of the beer that you would want (was once told that they didnt have any cold Corona)

Either way, I am saving waiting until Church + State opens across the street. This will be the nail in the coffin that will force Royal Claytons to close its doors...opening up the space for a good resturant in the building

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY !!!!

the service is terrible. I have been here 5 times, and every time it has been SEVERLY disapointing.

on one occasion, the 750 ml beer was set on the table, and as the waitress was walking away, I said 'can you please open this for us?' and she said "no", and walked away.

then, when the entrees arrived (about 5 min apart), we picked up pieces of pizza to eat, and were holding the pizza, while talking, and the waitress returned and said that she mixed up the order and that she needed this pizza for another a table. I put the slice down, and wathced here deliver the pizza to another table. Disgusting.

on the same occasion, when I requested Basalmic, the basalmic brought to the table had gone sour and had seemingly coagulated fat in in.

when the silverware wasn't replaced between courses, I couldn't get anyone's attention, and walked over to where the servers were hanging out... they didn't even stop talking to wonder why I was standing there.

The service is REALLLY SLOW, and entrees are often forgotten, meaning that the entrees 'waiting' under the heat lamp get cold.

I live in the neighborhood, and though I was pleased that we got a nice new restaurant, and given this place many chances to offer a mediocre expierience, I am now waiting for this place to go out of bussiness, so we can get a decent replacement.

if you are looking for somewhere downtown:
Cafe metropol
Weilands brewery
Cafe Pinot
Zucca
Watergrill
.... etc.

There are plenty of great places in downtown- THIS ISN"T ONE OF THEM

I work in downtown and have frequented RC quite a bit for lunch. Every meal I've had has been great- the Angus burger was delicious, the salmon was very fresh, the veggie sandwich was awesome. I usually go with several co-workers and all have been pleased with the food so I'm quite surprised by the other reviews that say the food is awful. I do have to admit that the service is not the greatest. I have never found them rude as other reviewers have stated however they are just pretty blah. They just serve the food and don't have much personality. I guess it would help if they were a little more pleasant.

This place has a charming ambiance, reminiscent of Soho. Dark paneling, salvaged stained glass, pool table and bar on one side. The waitstaff is sweet, genuine and friendly. And the food I've sampled so far is very tasty -- French onion soup, delicious bar pizzas, and great salads. This is really out of the way for me, but it's worth the drive.

Wow! I just came on here to complain a little and vent about how deplorable the food is at Royal Claytons. It is extremely close to my loft and couldn't be any more convenient. Too bad every meal I have had there (I have gone back a few times, just to give them a fair chance) has been beyond disastrous. The first time, I ordered pizza, which came out wet and soggy like a dishrag. My fiance ordered vegetable potpie, which arrived with half frozen vegetables. Each time thereafter has not been an improvement. Inedible omelet, half-cooked rice in the veggie curry dish, so on and so forth. These are all really basic dishes that in my mind are difficult to mess up. Well, they did... every single time. It is unfortunate and I keep thinking that they will get their act together. It is not difficult to serve a halfway decent meal, but they don?t even come close to that. But now, after having read below about the incident regarding the wallet, everyone can rest assured that I will never set foot in there again. Once the Cobras & Matadors people (who serve fantastic, delectable food, and have great service at all of their establishments) open up their new restaurant across the street, this place will not even be in the running.

As a repeat customer of RC, I too have experienced mediocre food and arrogant customer service. Thus, from a personal standpoint, I am appalled by how this restaurant has treated Mr. Berra on many levels. I believe his telling of his RC experience to be true and rich with pertinent details. I?ve seen firsthand this staff at work.

What?s worse than his wallet being stolen is the condescending and patronizing response from the owners. Implying he ?lost? or ?misplaced? the wallet ? that is ridiculous. Their response should?ve been in the disposition of?. ?We are deeply distraught over Mr. Berra?s experience at our restaurant and are very sorry over the loss of his wallet. We will do everything possible to ensure such an incident doesn?t happen in the future. Furthermore, we will work with our staff to ensure they deliver professional and respectful service in all situations. We strive to provide excellent customer service and are concerned when we hear otherwise.? THAT would have been the response of a responsible and caring restaurateur/savvy business person.

I stumbled across the CitySearch reviews because RC?s web site is shut down. Perhaps they?re already reaping the financial wrath of deplorable customer service and an arrogant attitude towards their patrons. If so, good riddance!

There are very few decent places to eat downtown and I have been hesitating to eat at Royal Claytons because everyone has told me that it?s awful. In a move of desperation, I decided to stop by -- it's the closest place to eat near my loft -- and, well, my friends were right. They even screwed up French onion soup (it was super sweet and sugary -- gross). Their hamburgers are bland and way overcooked, their fries taste like they've been sitting under a heat lamp all day, the service is marginal, forgetful and aloof. It went back again just hoping to get a sandwich to go, and -- whow!!!! -- this was the only inedible club sandwich I've ever ordered. I really want them to get their act together because the ambience is decent and there just aren't many good places to eat down here. Owners: seriously! Get your act together. Hire a new chef. You either have no taste whatsoever, or you know what the problems are and I genuinely hope you figure them out.

A little over a month ago I moved into The Biscuit Lofts accross the street from Royal Claytons and have been hooked ever since! Royal Claytons has that inviting neighborhood bar feel, mixed with a swanky NY pub ambiance. I"ve tried half of the menu so far and love the food. Favorites: Philly Cheese spring roles, Fish & Chips, Pizza's (all of them), Onion Soup, a tasty Angus Burger and a Chocolate Cheesecake to die for. I am anxious to try more. Since we are across the street, we pop in often and I am always surprised how a little place in the middle of downtown nowhere is always hopping with a great downtown artsy crowd - yet we are still always greeted like regulars. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to experience the "new downtown" experience.

As co-owners of Royal Claytons, we are very sorry to hear about Mr. Steve Berra's missing wallet situation that took place around the time he visited our establishment a week ago Sunday. We all lose things occasionally and know what a trauma it is to lose something as indispensable such as your I.D., money and credit cards. It is unfortunate that our staff was not able to find the wallet, but we can assure Mr. Berra that none of Royal Claytons' regular customers or our staff would be involved except to help remedy the problem, be understanding and try to help. Due to Mr. Berra's outward emotional anguish we also notified the police immediately just in case an intruder may have managed to sneak off with it, but that seems unlikely and we hope that his wallet was simply misplaced and turns up elsewhere soon. We sincerely offer Mr. Berra good luck in this regard and hope he frequents Royal Claytons again in the near future.

My name is Steve Berra and this is so strange I want people to know. I'd been to RCs quite a few times as I lived in the lofts above. I own a building just three blocks away so despite not living in my loft as of recent, I'm downtown a lot. But I can no longer go to RC's when hungry. I've never been treated with such disrespect by a waitress, so much so, my nephew and his friend both suggested we leave. And when I told her she was being rude, she shook her head and with a smirk held up her thumb and index finger and said, "just a little bit." as she walked away. We stayed against my better judgement and it only got worse. We ate our food which was actually fine. We got the bill ($50) and as bad as I wanted to leave no tip (something I've never in my life done) I ended up leaving $3. On my way out to the car I realized I left my wallet on the table. My nephew's friend went back in to grab it and upon his return he told me the waitress said it wasn't there. So I went inside and she very defensively said she didn't steal it, yet I was not accusing her of it. I was not yelling nor was I hostile at this point, but a male bouncer type grabs me and tells me he wants to talk to me. I remove his hand from my arm and tell him to not grab me. He only moved in closer. He offered no help, said no one stole it, but again, I never said anyone did and when I asked him to please back up as he was almost nose to nose, he got closer. The manager came over, who was actually cool, and wanted to help just as another waitress came by, who I didn't even see when I was there, and threw a snide remark at me for no reason. Okay, this is getting strange. We look for my wallet, it's nowhere to be found and the entire time I was there I was in my seat. I had three people all see my wallet on the table just before we left and within 45 seconds of leaving it was gone and the table cleared. Besides the manager, no one offered help or was cooperative in any way and the overall feel was mafioso like.

I stumbled upon Royal Clayton's by accident and it has turned into my favorite nighttime hangout. The staff is friendly and works hard to remember your name giving it a "Cheers" feeling each time you return. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed and you can't beat the free pool. The food and drinks are great and priced well for the quality. The crab cakes and the spring rolls are tasty appetizers, the filet mignon, fish, and pastas are all prepared well, and for dessert I would recommend the creme brulee or the fresh baked cookies and milk. Overall a fabulous establishment.

I walked in and loved this place. It's dark, cool and there's a pool table and awesome bar! The food is excellent! I had the wings and the onion soup and it was just the way you would want them to be-thick, robust servings and delicious!!!!! The bartenders are sweet and know how to make a killer drink. I look forward to spending many o' night at my new favorite place!

This place was rather bland. The bartender seemed gray--the color of the decor and the lifeless industrial walls. It kind of has a corporate BJ's pizzeria feel to it. I'd give it a year or two to get going. I guess.
