To recommend this place as a "morning after destination", it helps sooth hangovers. Pint glass mimosas and bottomless coffee. Everybody remembers and is super nice to the regulars.

I have only been to Genie's for breakfast, and it took a few visits for me to fall in love. The red-headded waitress with the Boston theme is my favorite. She's really attentive, genuine and punctual. The natural light is as great as the coffee and the menu has something for everyone. My favorite are all of the eggs benedict. I even came to Genie's for my birthday-- that's how much I love it. The only drawback is that parking is insane around its busy intersection.

We recently tried the brunch at Genie's on the recommendation of a friend after asking around for a good place for breakfast close to this neighborhood.

There was quite a line-up so we got on the list and sipped the house coffee and perused the menu in the front while awaiting our table.

Once seated, questions were answered and orders were taken promptly by our friendly waiter Mike who chatted and joked with us casually.

My wife had the traditional ham eggs beni, while our friends ordered the Crab cake eggs beni for themselves and a whole grain pancake for their little girl. After much deliberation, I settled on the biscuits and gravy plate. Everything was brought to the table fresh from the kitchen and was quite delicious, living up to the reputation of this place.

The menu includes lots of vegetarian and healthy minded options alongside more traditional fair. The staff was a typical young urban hipster crew who all seemed genuinely cool and helpful.

Overall, a fine experience. Highly recommend checking this joint out and trying it for yourself. We'll be back!

We love going to breakfast and were looking forward to trying Genies. Unfortunately, as many others have noted in their reviews, we had to wait for a very long time to be seated, even though there were multiple tables available around the restaurant. Then, when our food arrived, we noted that the toast was cold, and the "hash browns" were actually deep-fried-looking charred bits of potato unfit for eating. Take our word for it, the food was bad to mediocre --- definitely not worth the long wait. We won't be going back. Plenty of better restaurants in Portland.

Cons: Service and Food Were Not Good

We went there today for lunch Since I had never eaten there before I decided to play it safe and ordered the BLT. Bad move on my part! The bacon was BURNT, not well done I mean charcoal black. We couldn't get the waitress's attention to let her know so I could send it back. When she brought us the bill I explained that I couldn't eat it and she told me I should have let her know earlier HUH?? I couldn't get her attention. She explained to me that she was multi-tasking but if you ask me she was busy multi-talking with the other staff. Never again will I step foot in that place I hope the Manager gets a clue.

Pros: Water

Cons: Food & Staff

Genies egg bennies are the ace-est! I also love their huge white chocolate hazelnut pancakes. The ingredients they use are always top-notch and you can definitely taste the difference. It can take a while to get your order, but hey this place is popular, so shut up, the wait is worth it.

Awesome food, lots of interesting specials (that are always delicious), children welcome, full bar. My sister and her husband always want to go to Genies when they are visiting from NYC, because they say it is better than any breakfast in Manhatten. My favorite dish is the veggie biscuits & gravy: 1) often veggie gravy is gross, this is the best I have ever had, 2) it comes with eggs and taters, so I still get some protein with my gravy, 3) if the veggie gravy is good, I am sure the meat one is also. I also love the huevos rancheros and the eggs benedict and the wild mushroom scramble and...and...

This is my neighborhood breakfast spot. Often busy and a long wait after 10 but if you get in there earlier you can grab a booth, a strong cup of coffee and get a decent breakfast. My chief complaint is how loud it is.

Pros: You can get a great drink with a cheap big Breakfast

Cons: none

I ordered a tofu scramble after the server was very short with me when i asked if other menu items vegan. What I got was a wet pile of luke warm tofu and beans. There was so much water left in the unscrambled tofu that my sausage and tortilla chips were limp and soggy.
Genies, Tofu scramble is extremely easy to prepare, I would suggest that you take 10 minutes and look up a recipe online (there are many good ones). Then experiment until you find one that is actually worth serving

Pros: good looking non veg fare

Cons: i had poor service and even worse food

I used to come here every week, then they changed the service sometime last year. Since then its a miserable place to go for food.

Bottom Line:

Either revamp the service/cooks or close the place.

We went to genies to meet with some friends. 4 adults 3 kids. We waited for an hour and twenty five minutes to finally be seated. We watched as 13 parties were seated who had arrived after us. They waited only 5-10 minutes each. Am I suppose to believe that they couldnt put two tables together to seat us. When we finally sat down our waitress was cold and rude and never saw her after we got our food. No coffee refills. These people think they are too cool. I will never come back. Seems that they have a lot of similar reviews. Does the manager even care? Maybe next time I will get a few tacky tatoos and dress like a slacker, then I would be accomadated.

I have been to Genie's enough times now to finally write a review and feel that I am valid in my findings.

Skipping the dozen times I've been to Genie's before and always ended up with rude, inattentive or painfully slow service-- this most recent venture I went to Genie's will absolutely be my last.

A lot of times my boyfriend and I go there with other friends that suggest it. We sigh, and think, well maybe it will be better this time. It is about a 50/50 shot on getting some half way decent food for a good price.
This particular time, we were in the area, hungry for breakfast and thought: "eh, lets give it a go."

We followed protocol, signed in on the sheet, just 2 of us. Got our coffee and sat in the waiting area. It was not a particularly busy time of day, there were 3-4 people in front of us. We waited. And waited. And waited. We had waited for 45 minutes when I finally went up and looked at the sheet.... SIX groups had been seated after us. Our name was way up at the top, uncrossed off. Just sitting there. We brought it to the attention of the barista and asked her why we had been skipped and been waiting all this time and she said 'she didn't know' and that was all. The utter unfazed look on her face was enough to make me scream. And that sums up the service I have found to be consistent at Genie's. A general distain for the paying customer, lack of concern or responsibility when they screw up.
Perhaps it seems like a dumb thing to get upset about, but for all the dozen other times myself or friends have experienced the awful service there, it was the straw that ended that poor camel.

Pros: leaving... or never going

Cons: Horrid- terrible, service, burnt food that takes forever

My wife and I have gone to Genie's off and on for years,
and always liked the food enough to put up with the bad
and unfriendly service. Than we had a baby, and we
got treated with passive agressive cooler than though
hipster art school drop out angst ( especially by the female servers) until we ran into Theran. I'm probably
spelling his name wrong, but he is a tall blond guy
that rocks. If you get him, you will have a wonderful time and enjoy the food. Heaven help you if you have
a young child with the " Lady " servers. Good luck!

I tried Genies based on a friends recomendation. The service was slow at first, it took our waiter at least 15 minutes even to come and say hello to us once we had been seated. He was cordial enough, but not friendly like I am used to from service in Portland. The food was good, but their Hollandaise sauce was AMAZING!! It was the only redeeming quality, and the only reason I would return would be if I was in the mood for great Hollandaise. If I just wanted good breakfast I would go to the Tin Shed instead...

It was my first time in Genies, I'm a big breakfast guy but don't make it to that side of town too often. I almost didn't go because of some of these reviews about bad service but I'm sure glad I went. I don't know what these people are talking about, I started with the best bloody mary I have ever had, the bartender was super nice even though they where really busy and we where seated quickly by a chipper red head. Our server had a big smile on his face, gave us great recommandations and my coffee never got below half, hot and strong just they way I like it. Our food was great and came out really fast, everyone in there seemed o be having a great time, staff included. When I left I was thanked and told to have a great day, I walked out of there all warm and fuzzy, and not just from the bloody mary's.
It is worth the travel, I will be back....

I haven't been back to Genies in a while because the last 3 times I went there it has been a disappointing experience. Being someone that works "in the industry" I am unusually patient and understanding for whatever happens in a restaurant. But, this place has been consistently bad in the last few months.
I used to eat there as much as once a week with different friends, now I'm not sure I'll go back anymore.
The food has been barely edible, whether it be undercooked or burnt, they can't seem to get it right, the waitstaff are clearly pleasant people, but seem to be so concerned in behaving "casual" at work that they barely "serve" you and the coffee has tasted very strange. (Which is a sin, it's stumptown!)
Anyway... just thought I'd put it out there... perhaps the owner or manager could find some use in this to try and salvage Genies to what it once was.

There are a lot of good breakfast places in Portland, but I'd never been to Genie's. After today, this is top of the list. For reasonable prices (7-10 dollars) you get great breakfast food with a lot of class (crab cake eggs benedict; black truffle omelet). The jalepeno bloody mary was the one of the best I've tasted. However, be willing to wait in line for a bit - but maybe that's because we went on a Saturday. If you're trying to find a good place to go for brunch, Genies should be your first stop.

The waitresses were some of the sweetest and friendliest that I have had at breakfast. The food, on the other hand, was sub-par. I ordered the biscuits and mushroom gravy...they tasted good, but the gravy was actually cold and the biscuit very hard and dry. I have had much better b's and g. They serve Stumptown coffee, but ours ended up tasting burned and unclean, and the half & half they served us was really watery. The roasted potatoes had a weird chlorine taste to them. My wife got the crab cake eggs benedict, and they were awesome, but I left wishing that they served this dish at breakfast joints that I like better, for I don't think I will make a return trip to Genie's.

My husband and I had heard good things about Genie's so we went there to try it. We put our name on the list and waited outside. In the rain. And waited. And waited. 30 minutes later we poked our head in and to our suprise we saw 3 empty tables. I went up to the hostess and told her we've been waiting about 1/2 an hour and asked very politely if we can be seated. She muttered rudely, "We're doing the best we can here." So I went back outside and told my husband. Then the two of us watched as 3 more tables cleared and people left. These tables were cleaned and set up and STILL they weren't seating anyone. There were about 3 other small groups waiting. I went back in and said, 'there are an awful lot of open tables, can we come in out of the rain?" Another rude response basically letting me know they didn't care about our grumbling bellies and wet clothes. So we left and never went back. There were 6 empty tables in there and no one was being seated. WTF? That is not how you run a restaurant.

My boyfriend and I went after they had just opened, and had heard really great reviews. We sat at the bar and had OK service and OK food, nothing special. We then realized that maybe the great reviews were because all the hipsters could be together and celebrate their hipness in one place. It earned its reputation because it was a place to see and be seen. After a few years, tried it today. Got a lukewarm cappuccino, a waitress who seemed annoyed at me for existing and average, bland food. The good thing is it is not too expensive. That is a positive.

I have been a regular customer at Genie's for the past year or so....the service is usually ok, the food is usually good. Today I went in for brunch with a friend and we ordered a cajun benedict, which came with literally 2 white pieces of fat grisle under the eggs, super gross. I don't know if they had ran out of good cuts of ham or what, but we sent it back and asked to replace it with the regular benedict, which is always good. I would have not been upset, but our waitress was rude about us ordering something else, and then when she brought the bill, both of the benedicts were on it. I said something and she brought the manager over who said he would take off half of the amount of the sent back food, I could not believe that we were charging us for that extremely bad food....obviously did not care about seeing us ever again!
Never in my life have I had that happen, they were just so rude I will never go back there! There is something to be said for standing behind your employees, but when your wrong, your wrong. If you serve bad food by accident, you should be willing to fix it and try to make your customers happy.

We've gone here for a few years and the food and service is always good and consistent. They have the best eggs benedict in Portland though the vegetarian version is not as tasty as the other versions. Great place to bring out of town guests because they won't let you down. Can get busy on the weekends, come early or much later.

I went to Genie's last Saturday and the wait was not bad at all, unless you're a whiny, impatient git such as any driver who almost barrels over me by making a right before I completely cross the crosswalk, or, Veruca Salt.

The service was prompt, friendly, and attentive, so I really don't understand some of the reviews here. The hostess was so cute, it should be a crime.

Their hollandaise did not come out of a can. In fact, it was the best hollandaise I have ever had the pleasure of ingesting. It's fluffy, light texture was very complimentary to the creaminess of a runny egg yolk.

I will most definitely frequent this place whenever I get the chance.

The food is simply amazing. Genie's has quite the variety that you would struggle to find at other places. Most, if not all of what I saw was organic and local. Everything looked good however I had to go with the cakes. The white chocolate chip-hazel nut pancakes melted in my mouth. I just previously read a comment about the poor service someone received, so I would like to give you all hope: Me and my girlfriend had great service. The food was timely for how busy it was (they were at capacity and on approx. 10 min. wait time), and the quality obviously top notch. The only possible thing I could recommend to make it better would be to add a chicken fried steak option hehe. When we came in the owner, "Big J", was at the door with a smile. He seated us and gave us some good drink and food recommendations which turned out to be right on the money. If you don't live close, IT IS WORTH THE DRIVE!

Pros: THE FOOD! (obviously)

Cons: So good you might be in for a small wait.

Just went to genies for the first time after repeated suggestions from friends. The food was great. The scramble was fresh and you could taste the difference in the ingredients they used. Nice to see a veggie sausage gravy that still tastes great. However the service was awful. we were seated nicely enough but our server wasnt interested in us.No hello how are you doing or even an attempt at hospitality. When our food came it was set down if front of us and then she walked away without saying a word. we ate our food without ever being checked on( which i guess was ok because the food was great) or asked how things were. Same thing with the check. Just set it in on the table and walked away. i said thank you 3 times and she never responded. I and everyone at the table work in the industry and were shocked at how little our server cared. I usually tip 25-30 believing strongly in tip karma, but i couldn't stomach more than 15 percent and to be honest she didn't deserve even that modest of a tip. I would be more understanding if they were slammed but our server had plenty of time to do all the things needed- she just chose not to do them. i am now torn between going back and getting some great breakfast close to my home or never stepping foot in there again because i know there places that are happy to have me. Hopefully the rest are better, they cant all be that bad.

As a repeat patron of Genies Cafe I feel it's neccasary to warn others: THE FOOD IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! They use fresh and local produce and meats which makes a huge difference in the taste and consistency of their delicious menu.Their creative specials are never dissapointing- Always a tasty treat sensation! Fast, polite service only compliments your dining experience further. Now that they have lattes it is even harder to stay away...but why would you want to?

Genies has always been a great bet for breakfast. Excellent vegie options. Friendly. Full bar.
Bring the paper on the weekends. You'll probably have to wait, but it's worth it.

Genie's is a personal favorite, especially on weekdays when it's less crowded. I've never had a bad meal here and the customer service is great even when it is busy. I especially like the Huevos Ranheros and the Eggs Benedict. The potatoes are delicious, too! I highly recommend this cute little cafe.

I've been to Genie's five or six times for breakfast and once for lunch. The menu is not extensive, but the choices have always been interesting and what I have ordered has been well-executed. I have had a french sausage with white truffle oil scramble there that was unlike anything I've ever had. Wonderful. Our kids had some very good berry pancakes, and someone else in our party thought the french toast was very good. Their Bloody Mary knocked my socks off....there is nothing timid or pedestrian about it. The service was attentive enough, but not superior to other places I have been.

I really like Genie's a lot, eat there all the time. Their specials are inventive and the food is made with great care and flavor-which is why I'm so shocked. I had the corned beef hash the other day and it was literally the worst I've ever had. It was a big bowl of underdone onions and peppers with a few potatoes and an almost undetectable amout of deli-thin sliced corned beef. On the plus side the eggs were perfectly poached. I could recommend just about anything else here but stay away from this dish.

Great food and friendly service. They use fresh local products and make most things from scratch including all the sausage. Must try one of the egg benedicts (fresh house made hollandaise, never from a bag) or for lunch the Rueben sandwich (house made corned beef and sauerkraut). Oh and let??s not forget the great infused vodkas for fresh cocktails or the best bloody mary's in town including horseradish, jalapeo, habanera, cucumber, cucumber & dill, basil, rosemary, ginger and let??s not forget BACON! My favorite is the horseradish.

I had the eggs benedict, the best part of it was the canadian bacon. The wait was a bit outragious, to be seated...

I've been to Genie's a few times and it has always been a good choice for breakfast. I am of the opinion that french toast is always a good choice, but after ordering it at Genie's, I have changed my opinion. They use cheap Safeway bread and serve it with an Aunt Jemima / molasses 'maple syrup'. Soggy and gross.

I have to admit, I spent many evenings drinking margaritas at Genie's. Other than drinks they have little to offer. The food and service is too inconsistent for me to want to go back often. Sad, it started out great and seems to have gone down hill over the past six months. What happened Genie's?

At the corner of Division and 11th one wouldn't expect to find a gourmet dinner being served, but there it is! Affordable, attractively presented and delicious as well! The dinner menu has a nice range from lamb and beef burgers to quail even! I had a hard time deciding but went with the 'wild rice scallion crepes with three mushroom shallot filling and mustard pistachio sauce... ' The meal goes on with fresh steamed veggies & red quinoa salad for added protein. Proving the restaurants dinner menu is good for vegans to full-blown meat lovers & would make for a very special night out with your One. Am looking forward to going to breakfast there as well. The service was pleasant & spot on. I expect the breakfast menu will provide as great an experience! Do Try.

Been coming here since it opened. The food quality is always spectacular and the service has always been good. When I said no onions on my scrammble, I was asked if I wanted to substitute another ingredient which doesn't happen in most other places. Great Bloody Mary's and coffee drinks (and they serve Stumptown coffee too!)

The only drawbacks are that they can be really busy at Brunch time which just means you have to wait a while for a table and a little noisy when crowded.

Genie's has been a reliable and welcome addition to the lower Division neighborhood. They menu is very egg- and protein-centric, but everything is tasty. Full bar and wine parings are a nice option. Hair of the dog anyone? Be sure to look at the Specials board. The gravlax Bennie was solid!
