Great gym. For about $85 a month, you get great classes with great instructors, top notch machines, and spotlessly clean locker rooms and facilities. There people who work there are friendly, as are the other members. Oh, and it's open very late (I think almost 24 hours), if you're a night owl. Really a wonderful neighborhood gym.

Pros: Classes, cleanliness, hours, price

Cons: Only one location

I live only 2 blocks away, so this my most convenient gym. I'm here 3-5 days a week and I've been going here for almost 3 years. I don't do classes I just lift weights and do 1-2 miles of intense running. I hear the girls love the bounce class. The gym is kept clean, it has a sauna/steam room and it has a rock climbing wall to make things less mundane. Overall the crowd is nice and the girls who check me in are always super friendly(not to mention very attractive).

I don't know about the personal trainers there though. I always see them making these poor people do these ridiculous exercises. The ridiculous exercises are useful for people who's body's are used to the same old workout, but not for people who are clearly beginners. I do hope they teach them proper form and how not to hurt their backs.

Anyway, no real juiceheads go to the gym or at least I haven't noticed any. There is enough real estate so you don't ever really need to wait for a machine or tread mill. The place may be a tad over priced, but it is worth it. A sicilian wrap after an intense workout at the restaurant below makes my day. If you want to go to a great gym and you don't need to be cool and tell your friends that you go to NYSC then this is your place.

Pros: Equipment and Atmosphere

Cons: Sauna was broken for a month and a half, so happy its back up and running.

I loved this gym when I first started- It's clean, well-maintained and the class instructors are great. However I eventually stopped going last fall because of all the ditzy girls showing up late to yoga classes and disrupting the meditative process. I complained to the gym about it before and they tried to take care of it, but the yoga instructors themselves are so easy-going they never enforce the rules about showing up late.
I wish Astoria weren't so gentrified because I'm going crazy trying to find a gym like this one only with out the bimbo yuppies. I did really like the atmosphere on the whole. There was always a nice diversity of body shapes and ages- but it just wasn't worth the membership fee anymore ($80/mo) to be agitated during relaxation classes by a bunch of morons- you know the type of inconsiderate dumb-dumbs that stress you out and make you want to do yoga to begin with? Well, when they're in the class with you it makes the whole thing counter-productive. If you're only going for the machines or some of the less popular classes then you'll probably have a great time.
