We are not currently at Sonja's but have danced with her studio in the past. We also had to make the drive for the recital in the spring, and though a pain in the butt, it is the attitude we decide on that makes the difference. It made my kids feel so important that we made the drive so they could dance on a real professional stage. And we didn't complain about the commute because we know how much Sonja and her staff and all the dancers put into it. Also, Sonja has been active in pushing for a performing arts center out in the valley, she keeps in tune to what is going on with government funding and spreads the word about what funding is being voted on that will get the job done. And now I am excited to be putting my son in dance because he keeps dancing on the ball field! And this is where we want to be!

I am so grateful to Sonja and her stuff for giving back to my daughter her love and her desire to dance! After very bad expirience with the Dancer's workshop my daughter said that she hated dancing.
Again, thank you dear ones in Sonja's Studio of Dance! I saw you love our children and want them to enjoy dancing and anything they do in their lives. Blessings to you all!

I don't care what some people said, this place is awesome! I have been dancing there since I was 3, I am 12 now. The teachers are awesome and really nice. They have a ton of classes. There is something for everyone. I get to tryout for nutcracker and jazz drill. All of my teachers are amazing dancers even better teachers. Really, Sonjas studio of dance is AMAZING!

Sonja's is very affordable for my children . They take three classes each and love them . Also the instructors are very nice . We used to go to Stars Studio of Dance in Anchorage and it was okay , but at Sonja's they let my daughter have fun with dance . I recomend Sonja's to you because its a great place to learn and have fun !

We started out at another dance school and drove by and saw Ms. Sonjas. We went in an fell in love. The kids were smiling, having fun and the teachers were very pleasant.

My daughter has learned so much in just one semester. She loves all of her teachers.

I am very thankful that Sonja has such great prices so that my daughter can do something she loves. Her prices to the winter show where more than fair. Even though they dont have a performing arts center, the kids did a GREAT job!
oh yeah did I mention we DID NOT pay for winter costumes, and my daughter was in the Nutcracker and we didnt have to pay for those costumes either!
Sonjas has been a blessing!

My only complaint~~ The rude parents who leave the show early instead of supporting the rest of the dancers!

Dear Amy B.
It is too bad you didn't read the newsletter that the studio gave out to ALL of the students and parents prior to the recital. It made it clear where to go, when to be there and about the costumes. Don't forget if you have questions there is always someone there to answer them. $12.00 to see a precious child dance and enjoy what they have learned is nothing. Have you been to the movies lately. Sonja doesn't make a profit from these recitals. She does them FOR the kid's and thier families, it is alot of hard work and she puts many, many hours in preparation for the events. If you and your bored 4 year old didn't enjoy the show then you didn't look hard enough. There were many dancers and many hours to get to this point of recital time. Maybe for the bored 4 year old you could have brought him something to keep him occupied. As for you, I think you should look into your heart and think about your child, and how hard they worked on thier dance just so you would smile and enjoy it. I am grateful to have Sonjas here in Wasilla where my girls can dance, learn that perserverance pays off, and that when you work hard, you can achieve anything. As for our family, I am very pleased with Sonjas Studio, thier teachers are very well trained, the prices are very fair, the recitals are the best they can be without a performing art center. The schools are what we have for now. Just remember it is FOR the CHILDREN>not for you. My girls have been dancing with Sonja's for 10 years, and wouldn't dance anywhere else. I would like to say "THANK YOU" to Miss Sonja and ALL the teachers and staff for all of thier hard work and care that they put into everything they do at the studio.

Let me set things straight about Sonja's Dance Studio!! Sonja's is the best training you can get here in Alaska!! All of the teachers have dance degrees and are very professional. People don't realize how good they have it but still seem to complain!! The cost to take classes is nothing compared to what I paid in the lower 48. Then she provides families with 2 recitals so that parents can see their little dancers dress up and show off on stage. She only charges $65 for one costume for the spring recital, she provides all costumes for the Christmas recital. Wow!! Believe it or not parents still seem to complain and don't realize that Sonja does it for the parents and the kids because she sure doesn't make any money, she ends up having to pay out!! As far as the $3 to get into the recital Christmas recital and $10 for spring recital, are you folks serious!!I believe one studio charges $25 for their recital and you guys complain about her prices! Sonja goes over and beyond to make dance fun and enjoyable for your kids. You folks need to remember IT IS ABOUT THE KIDS!! There are so many things that Sonja does that parents take for granted and if any of you would go to the lower 48 you would have a rude awakening! She is so giving and a lot of you just want to take and complain. Parents need to sit back and let the teachers do their jobs. If you don't think you are getting the best, go check out other studio's and share your complaints with them. I guarantee you will come back and hopefully have learned to appreciate what Sonja does and how much she gives. You guys have no clue. This is recreational dance so let the kids enjoy it.
I have two children who dance there and they both love Sonja's. I know and trust that Sonja's will take care of my children when they are at the studio. They are the professionals so I leave the teaching to them just like I don't go to school and tell the teachers how to teach!
When it comes to the length of the recital, it was under 2 hours and of course parents were unhappy!! The kids put all this time into dancing so let them show you what they have learned, why do we have to put a time limit on it? At my last studio our recital was 41/2-5 hrs long, and I enjoyed every minute of it! Another note to keep in mind is that at recitals it not just about your kid, we are a dance family and we sit through the 2 hours to support all our fellow dancers!! It won't kill you to support other dancers because in a few years that could be your little one out there. It is hurtful to the other kids when they look out into the audience and most of you have left. RESPECT each other folks! Let's be more thoughtful of each other and learn to support Sonja and your fellow dancers. You all will notice your dance experience be so much more enjoyable if you thanked Sonja and her staff instead of looking for something to complain about. I challenge all my fellow dance families for 2011 to come back to the studio with supportive and positive attitudes. It makes a big difference for you and your child. I know I will!! All the kids at the studio are awesome and I hope that in 2011 I can meet more of them to expand my dance family !!
I want to thank Sonja and all her staff for everything they do for my children! You are all great and I love you for it!!

I put my eight-year-old daughter back in ballet because she loves it and I had forgotten how terrible the recitals and fees were. We went to the winter recital recently, and had to pay $12 for my family to get in, then sit on the bleachers for two hours (with a restless and bored four-year-old), all to see my darling daughter perform a very cute dance as the third-to-last performance. We were there early, but there was a huge problem with parking and the late-comers had no idea where to go (at the middle-school) or what door to enter. I paid a $65 costume fee. I thought it was for this recital, as I was never told differently. It is for the May recital. Oh. I am going to that one alone. My daughter will not be joining next year, or ever again. It is a shame they are so unorganized. My family who attended the recital were also very displeased.

I have been reading these reviews as we have looked at moving to the Wasilla/Palmer area and have been looking at activities for our 3 kids. It has been very disappointing to read the negative comments related to the costs of recital. First, remember, this women is in it to make money, she is not a service project, this is her business, the way she feeds her family. Secondly, no matter where you go, recital and dance costumes are costly. After looking at her tuition schedule she is very reasonable compared to many other places. Posting negativities because of expense is really pointless, after all it is a personal choice if you want to attend the school or not.

My daughter has been going to Sonja's since she was 3. She loves dance. It is a pain to go to Anchorage for the spring recital however since there is no place in the valley there is no other choice. The staff is great and it is very family friendly.. I recommend Sonja's for anyone who wants to dance and enjoy it.

My son has been going to Sonjas for break dancing and he asolutely loves it. As far as the cost, it is much cheaper then his karate classes, football camp, swim lessons, and my daughters gymnastic classes. Also the $10.00 to go to the recital is cheaper then going to see a movie, and it means a lot more. my son enjoys going to class and it is a constructive way for him to spend his time. Watching him in the recital after all the practices is very rewarding.

I have had good experiences for the most part at the studio. My daughter has done three semesters of creative movements which was great for her since she can be shy. She has done one semester of cheer/gymnastics and really came out of her shell for that. I think at times the instructors could be a little more demanding but they are great with the kids and especially great with the younger ages. The shows are really reasonable. A couple bucks for the winter show, never been a part of the summer show but the spring is quite a production and they obviously don't make any money off of it considering they rent an expensive place and it's only $10. Costumes are adorable and the variety at the show is always amazing.

Great job guys!

My daughter tried dance a few years back. Although she decided that she didn't want to do it anymore, we still go to watch the recitals. This year's recital was a special treat. Not only did we enjoy every minute of the show, we were overflowing with love and admiration for our favorite dancer when she took the stage and danced with the special needs girls. There wasn't a dry eye in the audience...IT WAS MAGICAL. Sonja's Studio has so much to offer for all children not just dancers.

At first, I thought this was a great place. Then, things changed. There is no organization, with a couple of exceptions. The secretary there thinks she knows EVERYTHING and is too opinionated. She's just plain rude! Most of the teachers there do not know how to control their class. I'm very disappointed and will not be back!!

you know that Sonja's Studio of Dance and Tumbling has three shows each year: The Nutcracker every other year.

Summer show cost is $3.00 in Palmer.
Winter show cost is $2.00 in Wasilla.
Nutcracker Show is free in Wasilla and 5 local schools.
Spring show cost is $10.00 in Anchorage..
Did you know that the prices to the shows have never changed since the start of productions.

Did you know that Sonja's Studio of Dance and Tumbling has used three professional video services, all required purchase price of DVD's at $25.00. The entire purchase price of DVD's went directly back to the companies. Please feel free to contact Sonja's for the phone numbers of these three companies.

Did you know that Sonja's Studio of Dance and Tumbling has no recital fee or annual registration fee to family or students. Monthly payment plans are also available.

Did you know that that the cost of a recital is much more than reserving space. Did you know you need insurance, programs, tickets, stagehands, technicians, backdrops, equipment, security (required),people for the front of the house, and backstage. Did you know Sonja's is not supported by grants, donations or city & state funds. All people who help support the success of the shows are employees. There are few volunteers.

Did you know the reason for a dress rehearsal is for the benefit of the students to feel comfortable for the big event. Did you know there is no cost for the dress rehearsal to the students or families. Did you know that to rent a facility for dress rehearsal is less than a full show only if there is no audience. If there is an audience the facility considers it to be a performance and charges more. This is cost saving to Sonja's and the families if parents do not watch a dress rehearsal. Besides, that is what the big event is for, to perform for family and friends.

Did you know that there is one costume fee each year. The students keep their costumes.

Did you know that a Newsletter is given out each month and emailed to families. Sonja's Studio of Dance announces all studio closure dates in the Monthly Newsletters.

Did you know that all Instructors and Staff at Sonja's Studio of Dance and Tumbling feel privileged to teach dance in the Valley. The students at Sonja's Studio of Dance are wonderful. It is an honor to serve.

Did you know that all proceeds from the flowers sold at the show are donated to education or local charities.

Ive let my daughter attend Sonja's for several years because she loves dance. Ive had to tell her she can no longer attend due the same issue with other posters, the recital costs are ridiculous. My family can no longer attend and see their granddaughter, sister, niece, etc because of the cost rising every year. In addition to that, most parents work in Anchorage and the recital is now in Anchorage, so parents have to get off work during the day, drive to Wasilla, pick up their child, drive back then be told we are not allowed to stay and watch our own children practice because Sonja is paranoid that we may not pay for the recital if we do. she doesnt realize most of us have prepaid for the tickets and is money hungry. If you want a cd to show the people who couldnt afford to attend its 25.00 and she states its what it costs her. What a load of crap. I know how much she pays for the rental of the space and it isnt what shes trying to tell us it is. Besides that, her classes simply teach the number she is making money off of at the recital, not actual formal dance steps as one would think. What a disappointment.

I am glad they are in Wasilla and 2 of my kids dance with SSD. I disagree with the comments of the poster who claims the instructors have no energy, as I found them full of zing. They have outgrown their building and the cost of the performance for parents who already pay serious cash for the classes is crippling, and you can't opt out of the performance! I wish the top dancers had a recital and the lower levels can dance to just become better dancers.

I like Sonja and I have been called for schedule changes. I wish they had fast paced classes for adults. I took ballet and froze to death because we moved slowly. I'd like to see jazz offered for adults and maybe modern dance.

Had my daughter there last year. Signed up for the classes in August and was given her schedule. Showed up for her first dance class in September and was told I was early by one hour. The class schedule had been *juggled* and received no phone call to inform us of the change. I had left work early to accommodate the original schedule. Asked why no one bothered to call and was given no explanation. Mostly staffed by teenage girls who are probably great dancers but their lack of professionalism totally detracts from any benefit of the dance class. Had several experiences with class changes (Thanksgiving break?), etc, with no prior notification. When you leave work early to get your child to dance class on time only to find the studio closed for "Holiday Break" is very annoying. How hard would it be to either come up with a printed schedule showing what holidays they are closed for or have one of these teenage girls make phone calls to inform the students that there is no class on a specific day? Felt like the lack of professionalism was pervasive. If there were another dance studio within reasonable driving range, I would go somewhere else. I wanted to view my daughters class in session and was sent to a totally wrong room...

We had a great summer experience with Sonja's Studio of Dance. My granddaughter participated in the June summer day-camp then the summer dance session, which ended in August. We regret that she was unable to dance this fall, but Lia misses dancing and hopefully will return again soon. She loves her "Happy Feet" and the ballet too. The instructors are fun, caring and very talented. Hope to see you again in Dance.

Well, that was 2 years ago. We started with the Pretty Princess Camp, then did Pre-tap & Pre-ballet. This past year Lia has been taking Ballet 1. This year, she will take both Ballet 1 & Tap 1. She is excited and so am I.

All the staff have been great. We get monthly newsletters and always get registered as soon as possible. Classes begin when the school year starts and finish with the recitals in December, May and August. If school is closed, then so is the studio, including snow/ice days...during the regular school year.

Summers are an opportunity to try something new for us. This year Lia is taking tumbling and cheer for the summer. She loves it. I am sure that if I could put her in everything, she would thoroughly enjoy herself. There are more and more boys joining dance too.

Sonja and the other instructors go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome and it shows. You can tell that they really love their work. Keep up the good work. We love you.

My four year old has been in two classes this year. She started with tumbling and she is just finishing creative movement. My daughter has some special needs and the teachers have been great with her. They have done such a great job of targeting the areas she needed work on that our physical therapist said that they no longer need to work with her as long as she stays at Sonja"s! We are truly blessed to have found a place with such caring and supportive staff!

My daughter went to Sonja's, she was a six at the time. A teenager was the instructor and showed as much energy as a dirty sock, there was no question she was probably a good dancer but she had no experience teaching. The gymnastics consisted of another teenager and a baby crawling around while another person watched the baby in class, I had no idea who the instructor was since no one provided any instruction. It was very disapointing. But the owner is quick to brag about how well her children have done and went onto college, I just didnt see any professionalism at that place.
