I took my dog to see Dr. Nelson for off/on limping. He has never had such a thourough exam. I did have to wait a bit but it was because there was a poor little cat that was hit by a car. The technician mindy was great and she kept me updated about the situation. I didn't mind waiting because that poor cat needed Dr. Nelson more than my dog. Alta Vista Rocks

Our little chweiner (chihuahua/dachsund) fell off the bed on Saturday. He seemed a little sore, but Monday when I arrived from work he couldn't move his back legs. Called several emergency vets but it was WAY out of our price range. An after service operator recommended Alta Vista. At 8pm Monday/Labor Day we took our pet in because it was affordable. The staff were great. We didn't wait long, 15 minutes or so. Although prognosis was poor, Dr. Penn answered my questions, gave us various scenerios and helped us figure things out. Our FES is there right now and we're waiting to see if things turn around after 48 hours. At $58/night, that too was reasonable. Called this am and staff gave us an update. Unfortunately, no change. Giving it another 24 hours before we have to make the decision is optional because they are making it affordable. Gave us great relief to have a vet vs. emergency vet assess our little FES, not wait until regular vet hours and not have an extreme financial stress. The result may be the same, but at least we did what we could before having to say goodbye to our little family member.

12/21/2010 UPDATE: Our FES is alive and walking. He's a little slow at times, but so am I. Taking him in to see Dr. Penn for a little comfort meds. VERY pleased with care of our FES.

Very Helpful! We took our pet to the emergency pet hospital Wednesday night because she was going into labor and the babies seemed stuck. We got there and the looked at her and told us she needed surgery to get the babies out! We were given an estimate of about $2500++++, we did not have that kind of money. They told us about Alta Vista Animal Hospital and told us they may be able to help. We called there and spoke to the receptionist, who was very helpful and told us to come over at 9pm at night and they could help us out with the costs. When we got there they went right to work on my baby girl. We spoke to the doctor who was very nice and then took her to surgery. We waited for her while she was in surgery and about an hour later we were told that there were 2 puppies and our girl was doing just fine!! Unfortunently there was 1 that didn't make it but we were just happy that our baby girl was okay and there were 2 puppies. By the time we left the bill came to a little under a $1000 which we only had $800 so they allowed us to make to payments on the rest. We are every so greatful that there is animal hospital's still out there that really care about your pet!! We owe Alta Vista! We will continue taking our pet's there for future care, even though we live kinda far!!

On a Sunday when my regular vet was closed, my neighbor suggested their vet. Alta Vista worked me in on a busy Sunday. The fees were better than an emergency clinic, plus all of the staff was great. The doctor did an awesome job fixing the laceration on my sweet Bubba. They will be my regular vet from now on!!

A great place to take my pets. I consider them my children and their care is very important to me. Now that Alta Vista has moved into a larger facility, things are going much smoother. The first building was too small (They were in the same place for over 50years) When I was in the waiting room last, they helped a woman with a dog in labor when no one else would because she was low on funds. Since they are open 7 days a week, till 10 pm week-days, sometimes I don't get to see the same Dr., but everyone has been wonderful. Highly recommend!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at Alta Vista. I have only had good experiences. Not only does the staff care, I've seen them help people with a sick pet and limited funds after no other place would work with them. I've gone in on a Sunday for an emergency and the doctors and nurses immediately helped me. I can only say good things

I do not recommend this vet to ANYONE.

On numerous occasions I brought my Chi in for a consistent, honking cough. Each time the staff would test him for something new; such as Valley Fever or Kennel Cough and each time, after paying around $300 for a specialized test, we would be told our dog was healthy and just needed to shed a little weight.

Recently my husband and I had to euthanize our beloved pet due to his trachea collapsing. The emergency hospital we took him to was extremely knowledgeable and knew right away what was causing his distress. After speaking with the veterinarian we learned that collapsed trachea is a common problem with small dogs, and Chihuahuas are a high risk for this problem and its not uncommon for this to be a hereditary issue. We were also informed that the cough and his lack of being able to exercise should have been a significant sign to any experienced, professional veterinarian. This could have been treated earlier with medication, a harness instead of a collar and putting a humidifier near his crate.

As you can expect, my family is very saddened by the loss of our friend and frustrated that not only could this have been prevented, but that we could have improved the quality of his life while he was with us.

I will no longer be taking any of my pets to Alta Vista.

Alta Vista used to be a great place to take your animals. It has become increasingly bad over the years and I have pulled all of my business from them. The technicians were abusive and added items to my bill that I declined. They turned a docile, loving but sick puppy into a monster through their mishandling. Obviously don't know how to handle animals well at all. Price have climbed and service has plummeted. Beware and avoid.

I took my dog Willow to Alta Vista to be put down. I had been thinking it was time for several days when I came home from work on a Monday night and Willow was laying on the floor unable to walk, I knew it was time. I flipped through the phone book and noticed that Alta Vista was open until 10pm. I was unsure at first and wanted to wait until my regular vet opened the next morning but it was time. I know that I did not make the wrong decision and the staff was very compassionate and helped me greatly get through this tough time. When I decide to get a new dog Alta Vista will be my new vet!

We started taking our dogs and cats here when our long-time vet semi-retired and worked part-time here. We have had to wait a few times, but their extended hours are great. The counter staff and vet techs have been friendly and the doctors seem competent, friendly, and communicative. We like Alta Vista

Things have turned around here! Great doctors, great staff. Only had to wait once and it was after 8pm because an emergency came in. I like the the hours they are open till 10pm.
I also like that they work with organizations that provide low-income neuters and spays and try to help people out!

I have had many visits with many different rescue dogs and my own dogs.
Loved it at first because of one very compassionate and knowledgeable tech named Jen. Unfortunately she is not there every time I have been.
Regardless, I have waited for hours to be seen even with an appointment. I waited an hour for a scheduled xray. I bothered the girl at the front about when i would be seen for the xray she suggested i just leave the dog and come back later. I told her i knew the xray would only take ten minutes to which she snottily replied it took for than ten. Not true. I finally got back and it took five minutes! Many times I have had to initiate the conversation to get any information from the vet. I, too, have gotten conflicting opinions. I do feel like they are wanting to milk every penny they can get. I am not sure I will return. If I could be guaranteed I would have Jen as a tech I might return. She keeps her appointments running smoothly. In the mean time, I will continue my search for the five star practice.

In dealing with my pet's illness, I had appointments with three different doctors all with different opinions and courses of treatment. When I called the clinic for more information, I often had to hold for 10-15 minutes before the staff answered the call and then continue to hold while they found out the information. Even in dealing with this clinic for three months, the staff did not take note of either my name or my pet's name. You'd think after 9-10 phone calls, they'd know. When I went to settle a bill after an additional test was ordered, it took 1/2 hour just to pay it. The doctor did not take the time to come out and speak to me and I was told by the staff that they did not know what the doctor was going to do, if another prescription would be ordered, etc., as though it was an inconvenience to ask these questions.

Throughout this experience, the impression I've received from Alta Vista Animal Hospital is that they don't care. This practice is a business. Customer service, quality nor consistency are concerns. Do not take your animal to Alta Vista Animal Hospital! Find another vet instead.

Amazing people! Everyone was VERY kind here, including Meghan and Angie! I've taken all my pets there, and every visit has consisted of timely visits, kind staff, and nothing but the animals best interest at hand! The prices are worth the service, and you get what you pay for! I believe the owner has done very well in his business and hiring on a fantastic team! Thank you!

Pros: New building coming soon! Open til 10!

Cons: Parking (not their fault)

Alta Vista has been the worst vet experience of my life. They are all about the all mighty dollar. So, if you care anything about the way you and your pet are treated I would recommend staying away from Alta Vista.

This is the best animal clinic in Arizona! Hands down! They are so compassionate and carring. They have reasonable rates. Best of all, they are open until 10p.m. every night and saturday and sundays. They can get busy especially at night, but Iwould rather go there than the 24 hour clinic and pay an arm and a leg. So just bring your patience and you won't be sorry.

PROS: Excellent hours and awsome staff
