I brought my 9 yr old cat to Van Aken/Dr. Johnson when she began losing weight rapidly and vomiting. Dr. Johnson spent about 2 minutes looking at her and said the problem was a cavity. She performed oral surgery 3 days later and sent her home covered in pee and diahrea. The same symptoms continued so i called the next morning and was told to wait 24 hours. the next day they were closed. Finally they would see her again four days after the surgery. Dr. Johnson said she had no idea what the problem is and kept her for observation. a week later she said she wanted to run 450 dollars more worth of tests because she wanted a specialist. I had already paid close to 700$ and asked if I could pay the 450 on my next pay day (2 weeks). she said no. She told me to pick her up Saturday (in 2 more days) and force feed her until I could pay up. My poor baby was put to sleep the next day for liver failure. I have since looked up the symptoms on the internet and found they are very common and with early detection and proper care she had a 90% chance of survival. But with the time Dr. Johnson waited, the unnessary pain and hardship of the wrong surgery performed, poor diagnosis, and wrong treatment, my kitties chances dropped to below 5%. My poor baby was put through hell before she died. And now they are coldly calling me to come in and pay for the cost of putting her to sleep. My baby girl lost her life and went through added pain because I chose to take her to this Van Aken Pet Hospital. I am so sorry I made this mistake and I hope none of you make the mistake of taking your babies here. I wish so much I had read these reviews before subjecting my poor jezebel to this pain and suffering. I am so sorry Jez

Dr. Johnsen thank you for being so kind hearted; that is why we love you. You know that we are the type of people who love our animals as they are our children. Thank you for working with us to train our animals, learn how to better care for them, and how to do it responsible now being on a set income being retired. You are EXCEPTIONAL!

My 12 year old beagle/pitbull mix was diagnosed with cancer last year and over the last couple months has gone down hill, she lost over 20 lbs of muscle and is in pain from arthritis, she also seems to blank out and not even know we are there then snap if we try to pet her when she is in this state (other times when she is lucid she does not do this). We decided it was time to put her down. When I scheduled the appointment they advised me that they would do the exam and then go ahead and let us be there with her while they put her to sleep. The Dr. came in felt the tumors then told me that it was my fault my dog had breast cancer because she was not spayed. She stated she recommended surgery to remove the numerous tumors, spay her, put her on pain med and hormones on a 12 YEAR OLD DOG. They would need blood work before this that would take two weeks plus x-rays. My dog is miserable and a risk with her snapping, I asked the Dr what we could do in the mean time and she said just hormones and hope she would feel better. I asked her what if I did all this and none work and she stated we would cross that bridge when we got there. I asked what if she bites someone and the Dr shrugged her shoulders and stated she would not put down a healthy dog! How is a dog with seriously progressed cancer and black outs healthy! She refused to put her down unless I paid thousands of dollars in unnecessary and invasive procedures. They just want money and do not care in the least. The Dr charged me for the visit and told me to go to the Human Society.

I am a beagle foster and rescue (retired) type that used to work in animal control. The tri state rescue network that I was affiliated with recommended Van Aken even though they are approximately 30 miles each way. I am down to five hounds, used to have six or more plus fosters and have used Doctor Johnson services for at least four years now. In short I don't drive cross town because she's not the best. There are three vet's within 3 miles of me. Tried two and still drive across town to Van Aken.

I was injured & my poor cat needed to see the vet. My roommate offered to take my cat in for me. I called Van Aken & explained my situation & asked if my roommate was to bring my cat in for me can I please give her my credit card to use? (I'm not expecting my roommate to pay the bill for me) They say no but check with a man named Tony who calls himself the "manager" & he gets on the phone with an attitude & won't listen to me. I tried explaining my cat needed to be seen badly & he said he didn't care. I even said I would write a letter stating my roommate has permission to use my card & they could keep it on file. He basically tells me off yelling at me & that he won't help me. I told him I have brought my pets there for a long time & he said well you don't now. He told me I was committing fraud & I was never allowed in there again & he didn't care if my pet died! All this over me asking if my roommate could use MY card & bring MY pet in for me. Seriously! That man has some serious anger issues & I don't even want to think how he treats the pets there when no-one is around to see. After dealing with such rude people I took my cat to an amazing place who did let my roommate use my card & they were so amazing. He did me the favor by telling me I could never come there again. Horrible Horrible man who serious control & anger issues!

This is by FAR the absolute best place to go for your furry family (meaning pets!). My family and I have been going here (to Dr. Johnson) for over 25 years. Even though I live in Maricopa, I still travel all the way to this vet.

Dr. Johnsen is the best vet in the world! She cares for our animals when they are sick or injured and takes them home when they need extra care. We are so grateful that she listened to her calling to be a humanitarian veterinarian! On a scale from 1 to 10 she is a SOLID 11.

Dr. Suzanne Johnson has taken care of our dogs and cats for over 12 years. She is the most patient and kind Dr. we have ever had for many years for our pets. She has never done surgeries that we didn't want and she has never over priced us on medications or vet bills compared to other vet clinics that over price. We are so thankful and very lucky to have a wonderful and very caring Dr. to care for our pets. The staff their are polite and caring for our pets. In the past when we have had ER. and she would be on call. She would call right away and quickly resolve the problem and know how to handle emergency situations very professionally. She has saved our senior cat from a mysterious illness. Our cat is now doing so much better. And Dr. Johnson has helped us on how to handle our rescue dog who had a very serious anxiety disorder and stomach problem. Our rescue dog is now super healthy. Both physically and mentally better. When before I took our dog to another vet clinic that was going to charge me close to $900 on a stomach problem. Dr. Johnson's clinic didn't charge me that amount and there was no surgery. Our rescue dog only needed medication to help her stomach. And we had the option if we wanted to try anxiety medication for our dog. We did and our dog is doing a lot better. I can go on and on for hours talking about the wonderful things that Dr. Johnson has done to help our dogs and cats. I totally recommend their services.

Dr. Suzanne Johnsen at the Van Aken Pet Hospital is so kind hearted. My wife and I ran into financial difficulties but our pit bull got into a fight and was in extremely bad shape. She operated on him and patched him up. Whereas the bill should have been huge she worked out what we could afford. We highly recommend her and her staff because the animal welfare always comes first. I will always take my pets to her and when I can pay her the price she deserves I will make it up to her. For now, I am so happy we have Ralph back. We love you Dr. Johnsen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT BRING YOUR LOVED ONE HERE!!!!!!!!! unless you want it to go through unnecessary surgeries and pay 500% more than you normally would for unnecessary treatment. My cat had a wound on it's tail from a fight that was begining to become infected. Johnson immediately wanted to do surgery implanting a drain tube, and removing teeth......what wait it's his a$$ not his mouth and it's a cut not a freaking tumor WTF, when she came back with a $600 plan I was like uuuummmm NO, I'm going for a second opinion. Just like I suspected it was as simple as getting some antibiotics. You know it's really wrong to not only sell your unnecessary treatment plans to customers who are there with a sick family member.....unethical ect. but you're putting these animals through shiit they shouldn't be going through SO WRONG!!!! you should lose your practice and go to jail honestly. NEVER SET FOOT IN THIS PLACE

I was referred to Dr. Johnson from friend I have grown up with in PA. When I pulled up I can tell you the aesthetics were not so pleasing to the senses, but that was not my concern as much as the health and well being of my pets, so I quickly put that aside. We had routine check up and all went well, nothing out of the ordinary.
Several months after, while on a routine walk around the neighborhood, I noticed one of my dog's breathing became abnormal. When we got home it was rapid and shallow. I called the vet and we traveled to the clinic and were seen by Dr. Johnson immediately. She was very gentle and calm with both myself and my sick and frightened dog. Dr. Johnson suggested X-rays to get a better look at what was going on. After examining the films she informed me that my dog had "shock lung" or acute respiratory distress that causes fluid build up in the lungs and eventually death. Naturally, I fell apart, but she continued in her comforting manner to assure me we could treat this aggressively with diuretics, benadryl, and steroids and go from there. My dog was kept overnight while I worried sick. The next morning when I got his progress report his health was improving and as long as it continued I would be able to take him home at the end of the day.
Once I arrived to pick him up Dr. Johnson reassured me with her smiles and told me that he would get so anxious when she would examine him it was hard for her to calculate an accurate heart rate. She said she let him hang out in her office and sit with her to let him get more comfortable where she could best hear his heartbeat. This meant so very much to me.
I've read the other reviews and all I can give is my literal life saving experience. Surgery was NEVER mentioned, it was appropriately priced, and as inpatient psychiatric nurse I can assure you there were absolutely no signs or symptoms of psychotic nor manic behavior! As if I would allow my pet to be treated by someone displaying mental instability! I hope my experience is helpful to someone. Every day I am thankful for what Dr. Johnson did to take away my pain and fear and save the life of my most loyal companion.

I have been taking my four legged family members to Dr Johnson for 6 years now. She has always treated all my animals with dignity, respect and love. She is well educated and stays current on veterinary medicine. 9 weeks ago, one of my dogs fell 10 feet off a slide and tore the ligaments in his right front wrist. We tried a splint to see if it would heal...it didn't...surgery was the only option. My pocket was scared, Dr. Johnson and Tony, the Office Manager knew this...they worked with me so much that I shed tears of thanks. My dog had to stay overnight 3 nights and I didn't worry at all that he wouldn't get the care he needed. I would highly recommend Dr. Johnson to care for your four legged family members.

I am the client to which Bill G. is referring to in his review below dated November 17, 2011. I will start with the statement that Dr. Johnsen is the most loving, caring, and giving veterinarian that I have ever encountered. She has cared for my pets for over 15 years and will continue to be my veterinarian for as long as I have need for one. She has not only nursed several of my pets through serious illness but has given solace, comfort and assistance to me on a personal level when I myself was very sick. I cannot recommend her more highly as a caretaker of animals and as a beautiful human being.

The incident Bill describes was indeed awkward, for all, as I was emotionally and desperately trying to save a loved pets life. I chose to bring a professional into this situation whose methods were very controversial in the eyes of Dr. Johnsen and, following HER personal beliefs, she met this man and his methods with a manner of distrust ?? AS I MYSELF WOULD HAVE if I had been her. I do not fault her for this. I love her and trust her more for this. She will not just ??go with the flow.? She will stand up for what she believes.

I will admit that with the confusion caused by the emotional turmoil of losing my dog that I briefly considered changing the care of all my animals to another vet. This was because Dr. Johnsen did not approve a medication that Bill G. felt my dog needed so he recommended a vet to me that would. The results of my work with Bill G. cannot be evaluated in any real sense. Life complications for both of us made it impossible to do the work that was needed to be done to prove his methods so I will not comment on that here.

What I will comment on is that my brief experience with the new vet did not satisfy me. I MADE A MISTAKE. And now, someone has been hurt because of it.

If one person is swayed from using Dr. Johnsen as their vet I have not only injured her professionally, I have hurt someone I consider a friend. That breaks my heart.

I have moved clear across town from Dr. Johnsen??s office since this reported incident. There are several vet offices within walking distance of where I now live. I continue to take my pets to her in spite of the fact that it is now not very convenient.

I do this because I trust her.

I do this because THERE IS NO ONE ELSE I would want to care for my pets.

Dr. Johnsen is the most unprofessional and insane Vet I have ever encountered. I am a Harvard Trained Applied Animal Behaviorist with an M.S. In Animal Psychology, Post Graduate work in Biological Basis of Behavior, NEUROCHEMICAL imbalances in companion animals, and Canine Cognition. I have trained professionally since 1992, and I specialize in dogs and cats with severe fears, phobias, and severe aggression. I met a client with an aggressive dog who had done everything right including working with other respectable and competent trainers. After continued aggression, bites to children, and strangers, the client thought they might euthanize their dog. Instead they contacted myself for help. It was very obvious based on a complete and thorough history of this dog that itbhas a significant NEUROCHEMICAL imbalance. I could have referred this client directly to a Veterinarian Behaviorist, but they had significant money concerns. When we arrived for the vet appointment, this hospital stunk like urine and feces, the building was old, falling apart, and filthy. I introduced myself and reach out to shake the vets hand. Dr. Johnsen, Steped back looked anxious and nervous and could not bring herself to look me in the eye. She seemed appalled that I wanted to shake her hand. When I spoke up and told her that her client and I were there for a med exam to rule out medical factors related to aggression and fear she did not acknowledge me at all. I also saidnthat I have had great success as many other behaviorists have had with Prozac, see Dr. Karen Overall textbook on Behavioral Medicine in Companion Animals, she said, " oh no we don't like to do that.". She did recommend thatbthe client see a local veterinarian behaviorist. I stated thatbI also had mentioned thatbwith the client but they wanted to try to save some money. Dr. Johnsen, then looked at me angry when I mentioned that I have worked with the vet behaviorist and had referred many clients to the vet behaviorist. At that point Dr. johnsen said " That better not be happening, she only takes referrals from vets, I asked if it was her understanding that the vet behaviorist would only take a referral froma vet, and she said that was the proper protocol, and that we have to do it this way. Quite frankly opinion here only made me wonder if there is a kickmback referral fee, as there is only 1 vet behaviorist in AZ as far as I am aware of. Bottom line. After meeting this Vet and experiencing this kind of disrespect and lackmof professionalism, and as a result of seeing first hand the egotistical nature of this vet and the filthy conditions of this clinic, I looked online for reviews. I saw many poor reviews, and also poor reviews from prior staff. I realize that n business will make everyone happy, I also realize that some former employees may be disgruntled. But what I experienced today, I find the statements made by prior employees to appear to be true. Finally the vet called the vet behaviorist and ,ade the referral, and then told the vet behaviorist the client should not be working with me using my methods with absolutely no knowledge of myself, our methods or training. THIS IS THE LAST PLACE I WOULD EVER WANT MY FURRY LOVED ONES TO BE AND THIS IS THE LAST VET I WOULD EVER WANT MY BELOVED PETS TO BE IN THE HANDS OF

I am NOT a customer of Van Arken Pet Hospital. I grew up around 20 years ago on 51st avenue and Thomas. We made frequent trips down Indian School and honestly most of the businesses there are not ones I would recommend. In the past 20 years the area has gotten even worse. I remember that vet clinic from my childhood and remembered never wanting to take my pets there! Even as I child, I knew that place didn't look right.

Well I am now a pet owner and got a voucher from Cat Nip and Tuck for a spay. My cat is a part of our family so we wanted her first vet visit to be stress free (for everyone involved). I got to the location and realized to my horror that it was the same clinic I had vowed never to use!!

I sat in the car with my meowing cat for 15 minutes looking through these reviews. As an online reviewer, I will say that it is VERY difficult for a business to get this many low ratings without something being wrong there. Especially now that sites can track IP addresses to stop spam and bully reviews. I was shocked that 3 reviews would be 1 stars followed by a random 5 star. That is always odd on a website.

I just didn't feel right leaving my cat at a place where reports of pets dying ran rampant online. It's only more horrifying that there are separate accounts of owners not being informed about their pets dying! I didn't want to get there at 4 to be told that our barely year old cat was dead for no explainable reason.

If you love your animal, listen to your instincts. I did and I don't regret it at all! DON'T LOOSE HOPE, THERE ARE OTHER LOW COST VETS THAT DON'T COME WITH AN EXTREME CAUTION TAG!

I have been seeing Dr. Johnson at Van Aken for several years and she has treated all of my cats and dogs with love every time. I would trust Dr. Johnson with any of my animals without hesitation. She has always treated them with the best possible care and concern. She has always been wonderful to me as well. I believe with all my heart that she the best vet I have ever been to and trust her completely!

I take offense to the negative comments in the other reviews because I have never worked at Van Aken or in the industry, but I only have the best regard for Dr. Johnson and her staff.

I love dr. johnsen! Ive been going to Van Aken for over 8 years, she has helped us threw my boxers cancer, put our brittnay to sleep comfortably, taken care of countless cats that she helps us save. She cured my dogs parvo for a low price, and helps me find animals homes so we dont have to take them to the shelter! she stands behind her work, and she makes sure all our pets are cared for. Dr. Johnsen may not have the greatest people skills but when you see her handle your pet and talk to your pet like they mean the world to her, your worries leave! I LOVE VAN AKEN, I just dont love the front office girls!

dr. johnsen is a MONSTER!!!!! She is insane. The type of insanity that needs to be treated with a psychiatrist. She is rude, unfriendly, and many animals have DIED under her care. She LOVES CUTTING ANIMALS OPEN. I believe that's also part of her insanity and crazyness. Don't take your pets to her she will lie to get your pet into surgery. Which is why most of her work are surgeries. please people use common sense! The good reviews here are written by her husband and emplyees. The true reviews which are only 1 star have a story to support the review. Look into the complaints that have been files against her, they are horror stories. This woman is a lunatic and a MONTER!!!!

Okay, I don't understand all the negative comments concerning Van Aken's. I've been bringing my dogs there since 1977, so for over 30 years and have NEVER had any reason to complain. I've trusted the lives and health of 7 dogs to them. The staff has always been kind, friendly and helpful. As for the Dr, I cannot say anything but the best things about her. She always listens to what I have to say about my dogs and goes from there, and I can say from experience with other vets that this isn't always so. She always tells me ALL the options and lets me make the choice as to treatment and never tries to pressure me in any way. Five years ago my dog tore the ligaments in her knee (a large dog), and we opted for the surgery. My dog is whole and healthy and active and I cannot be more impressed and pleased with the outcome that I credit totally to her skills. Now, the doctor may be a bit eccentric, but so what. I don't care if she has "people skills" as some have written here, what I DO care about is that she obviously has a compassion, love and knowledge for animals. And that's the reason I take them there, not for me but for them. And that's not to imply anything negative about her interactions with me. She's always been patient and nothing but pleasant to me and the other members of my family I have, and will continue to recommend her and the hospital to anyone who loves their pets and wants someone who cares about them to see to their medical needs.

Aah, the internet. Anyone can write anything. There are always 2 sides to every story. So here is my side. I have worked for 11+ years in the field with many vets and many hospitals. I have not always taken my pets to the hospitals I used to work for due to a lack of trust. However, I have worked for Van Aken for 2 years and I completely trust Dr. Johnsen and my coworkers. She is the most competent and compassionate vet I have ever met. She expects 100% from her employees and why shouldn't she. We are there for one reason and one reason only: to provide quality care and genuine compassion for the animals. Our staff will not stroke your ego if you are neglecting your pet, we will educate you and recommend what you can do to give your pet the best. If you don't want to hear the truth, then our hospital and you may not be the best fit. I love my pets with all my heart, and if Dr Johnsen says "do this", I ask no questions. Some of the reviews stated that we are in it for the money.I am offended by these statements. Our prices are very competitive.Dr. Johnsen's skills are excellent. Our motive is to help animals. If your pet is in need of veterinary care, I challenge you to find to find a better vet. Christi H., Vet Assistant and proud of it

If you want the nitty-gritty, here it is. I worked at this clinic for a long time. I got to know the staff, the clients, and the way of the work. With the exception of one, the technicians are payed $8 an hour, they're hired without work experience because this hospital's ways just cannot be compared to anothers, and the office manager (Tony) knows very well that an educated technician would NOT put up with Doctor J, much less the working conditions. Dr. Johnsen genuinely cares about animals, she loves them with all of her heart. She and Tony are business partners more than anything and they have different concerns; they argue often. I believe Dr. J's priorities are wrong, as her biggest concern is usually keeping a pet alive as long as possible, rather than considering their quality of life. If she can keep a dog alive for 6 months longer, she'll do anything in her power to do it. She's incredibly intelligent and probably mad because of it. Some random tidbits on the Doc: She plays (or played) multiple instruments in an Orchestra. She's definitely not a people-person. She's no social skills whatsoever. She won't look you in the eyes, she won't apologize for making mistakes, and she'll focus in on your weakness and insult it until you're empty. That is, of course, unless you call her a c**t and walk out. Then she'll walk into her office and cry. She's a piece of work. A compliment or criticism will get you nowhere with her. She's miserable and content with it. It's been a few years since I've worked for her, and I've never met anyone quite like her, and hope I never do. As for the hospital itself, it is old. It smells. Half of the time, the A/C didn't even work in the kennel/sick or injured holding area. The wait can get long because they are often extremely busy and clients are designated to specific rooms based on a pet's reason for being there. They won't put puppies in room one, for example, if they're not expected to have Parvo. It's a good system, and I'd wait an extra 20 minutes to insure my pup isn't exposed to the virus accidentally. As a tech we were expected to clean exceptionally well (oh boy, we'd really hear it if we missed a spot) and there is a cleaner that comes after hours to clean and sanitize the hospital. Prices are low, and you do get what you pay for in customer service. I wouldn't say this clinic is in it for the money. Do realize Dr. J may not have the best answers. I'll give an example: A blue heeler got hit by a car breaking three of his legs. Over a 4 month period, the poor dog had to come in for repeated surgeries including placement of metal pins going from one side of his hips to the other. Painful X-ray after X-ray, replacement and adjustment surgery after surgery. I cried every time he came in. The most wonderful dog you'd ever meet, sweet as could be but cried endlessly and we had to muzzle him for X-rays because they were so painful for him. The owners of course never seen what went on with him behind the exam room door, they didn't realize how torturous the ongoing fight for saving his legs and life had become for him. Dr. J's main focus was to 'make him right' instead of letting him go. It came to the point that I couldn't take it anymore - I resigned.

I started working for van aken last year and can't even begin to tell you how horrible it was. If you think the outside is bad, try working in the back!!! There are NEEDLES left all over the place for one!!! I was appalled at that! It's such a safety hazard to the animals. I didn't have too many problems with Dr. Johnsen but I''ve seen her curse everyone out numerous times and tell them how stupid and useless they are as employees. You have to walk on eggshells around her. Her husband is a pervert who makes the most inappropriate comments toward the employees (why do you think only girls are working there?). The hospital is beyond unsanitized no matter how good everyone trys cleans it. The building is just too old. Dr. Johnsen will pull in almost 60 some surgeries a day sometimes (with the ferrel cats and other animals) and lose track sometimes with actually following through with the surgery (I'm pretty sure she uses the same surgery utensils on animals sometimes too because i know we didn't have that many surgery packs). I've seen her 'forget' to do surgeries and customers get upset (which is understandable). Mice are consistently running around that building carrying God knows what diseases. I'm so glad I left there. I ended up taking pictures of how bad the place was (including the needles on the ground, drain clogs which consistently happened, etc). My advice - go to another vet clinic!!!!!

I found a feral kitty right before Christmas of '09. 'Big King' was starved, had ringworm all over him, and had an eyeball that was severely infected. Dr. Johnsen saw him, did a quick skin test, estimated his age for me and then told me to bring him back when he was cleared of the skin infection and had put on some weight so she could neuter him and take the eyeball out. And walked out! I have always found her odd, unfriendly, will not listen to you, her way is the only way. I took this poor kitty to another vet, they gave me skin meds, advice on the best way to care for him, and told me that eye removal was such an invasive surgery that it should only be done if nothing else works. I was to wash his eye out each day with saline solution, put some ointment in it and see what happens. King is now a big handsome kitty, and though the eye does not work and looks funny, he did not have to go through that! She wanted the money - nothing more. Could give a damn about the cat or what he had to go through! The place is filthy dirty, stinks to high heaven, rife with disease, the vet is a very strange woman in manner, speech and thought. Do not take your beloved pets here unless you want them to catch infectons or to die in surgery!! Only gave it one star as I could not pick none!

That is too bad that the VanAken Pet Hospital has gotten so bad. My uncle owned this hospital for 30 years and sold it 29 years ago. My uncle is now 89 and I am sure he would be appaled at its' condition. My uncle worked there 7 days a week and 10 to 12 hours a day. He would even take animals home with him that no one wanted. I am glad I read this as I was going to go take pictures of it for him. He dedicated his life to that hospital and VanAken is my uncle's last name and no wonder they kept it the same name as he had an excellent reputation for 30 years.

Went to this clinic as a returning customer. I left my money in my vehicle. I asked a lady at the front desk if I had time to run out to get my money (and run I did). She was fine with that. ( Payment needed to be made before services were preformed.) Some other woman with a piss poor attitude made a nasty remark due to my poor preparation in not having payment ready and loosing my place in line...which I NEVER made a fuss about. I nearly walked out, but decided to stay since I was already there. Another staff member appologized later. I will take my beloved pets & business elsewhere.

Van Aken hospital is horrible in the way they treat people. When I brought our two cats in to get spayed- they wanted us to get our cats vaccinated. I told her we did that at the humane society. Then the doctor asked if I had my records, I told her not with me... I am not sure if she assumed I was lying because then the doctor preceeded to say. You know if they don't ACTUALLY have their rabies shots and bite a kid then they are gonna have to get their heads chopped off to be tested for rabies... I was HORRIFIED that she would say that to me. I know vaccines are important, but for a vet to say that was pretty ridiculous.

I applied for a job at this clinic around 2006 and worked there for one day. If you think the parts you can see are dirty you wouldn't believe the parts you can't see. It looks like an episode of Hoarders in places in the back. It stinks like disease and the contagious animals (a huge numbers of Parvo cases come through there) are not well separated from the others. Working there the whole day I never really spoke to the vet, just her husband, who acts like he's running interference for her. It seems like everything has to go through him first, almost like he was keeping people away from her. They do seem to care about the animals, someone brought a stray in while I was there and they did what they could to look for an owner, promising to keep it for at least a few days in case someone hears anything. At least at check in and discharge the animals are treated well, the staff seemed caring. I didn't see enough to judge the treatment capabilities. I didn't see any indication that they were dishonest and I was given a pretty good run down of their policies.
Honestly when I got home from spending the day there I immediately showered and put my clothes right in the washer before touching my dogs, I was afraid I was going to infect them with something, and in all my years in the animal care business I have never felt that way before. I think they mean well but it is just too dirty to take a chance.

So.... There was this dog named "Zeus".. A big beautiful Great Dane who was also paralyzed; (see Pachuco's story)

Poor Zeus' owners could afford the treatment... which did not work. Zeus had to be walked daily; twice a day, dragged around the yard there in the quad behind the clinic where the kenneled prisoners are kept.

Zeus died after a couple weeks of suffering. When The Doctor (YES DR. J) was finally told that Zeus had given up... She had some one on staff call the owners and let them know that their dog was not going to make it and that he would need to be put down. If they wanted to come in and be there to say goodbye; they should do so...

Zeus had been dead for at least 30 minutes before the tech told Dr. J. for one reason; She knew Dr. J. would try to keep him alive and she could not stand to see this happen again. The Dr. hates to lose an animal and will go all out to keep them alive; no matter what the cost.

Dr. J. ordered her crew to get the dog and heave his dead body up on the treatment table where he was tubed and given oxygen. Once Zeus' lungs began to receive oxygen; though he had been dead for nearly an hour.... His tongue became pink again and he looked not so much dead as "unconscious".

The owners showed up to see Dr. J. standing next to Zeus with her stethoscope on his chest... pretending to listen to his weakening heartbeat. HA! They were fooled!!! I would have went to my dog and touched him to say goodbye; I might have realized he was stiff and questioned wtf is the deal here? They did not?!!

They stood there crying while Dr. J. injected the fatal dose into a dead dogs vein and pretended to hear his heart stop.!!!!!!

This was the most horrible thing I never knew could be done. The prior suffering was horrible to witness; her ethics are those of a mad man.

I wrote a review eariler, and now wish to take it back! Nothing bad has happen to our animals that I'm aware of atleast. However, I was having increasing problems, with her husband Tony. His attittude sucks! That got me starting to do some checking. OMG, I feel so bad for the people, writting in. I was never thrilled with the way they did many things , but I did't want to make a mountianout of a mole hill. Please do your homework before comming here. Check with the board of vets. I was very lucky many many people were not! There are lots of good reasonabily priced doctors out there you just have to look! At first glace she looks great, I don't know what the problem is, but it's not getting better. Just for fun also check out her kennels reviews. They are called Maryvalle Kennels. I know this because my daughter works there.

I will never take another pet to this hospital. My dog was very sick and we decided to do what we could to save her. At first, I thought they wanted what was best for her, but it soon became clear that no one there had my dog's best interest at heart at all. Instead she went under numerous needless surgeries and suffered endlessly. And even though she wasn't able to eat and was not showing signs of improvement, this so called "hospital" apparently leaves their animals alone at night and my poor dog died all by herself in a crate at that place. The doctor was more concerned about being a hero and proving that she could fix her than she was about my dog. I paid them THOUSANDS of dollars and when I could not pay the last $450 because I lost my job (which I do not think I owed them as she told me should would only charge me from now on if she saved my dog, which she did not), and was forced to file BK, they illegally sent me to collections 10 months after my discharge was finalized. When I called I got a smug response from the husband about how it must be nice to write off my bills. Yeah, that's right, I lost my beloved dog, my house, car, business, etc., just so I could avoid their bill. How ignorant are they!!!???

I don't recommend the place. The office is trashy. I lost my pet due to Dr Suzanne surgery. The way she and her staff broke the news was so unprofessional. Before the surgery Suzanne and her staff were very convincing that my dog needed surgery and it seemed like they care. Once finding out my dog passed away, Suzanne and the office treated the incident as if it was nothing. I received no calls and had to find out the news by showing up at the office. Once requesting to speak with Suzanne I got the run around. I just feel the explanation for my dog's death odd. When I was trying to figure out what happened i feel like Suzanne and her staff were getting offended by me asking questions. After all I can only advise those to think twice before letting Suzanne perform surgeries. I have come across other people who used Suzanne for surgeries and their cats or dogs have passed away from Suzanne surgery. One gentleman advised me his cat passed away and found out after that Suzanne suffers from extreme arthritis. Obviously the regulations for veterinarians aren't as strict as physicians so that probably explains why she is still around.

I had a puppy with a hurt leg and was referred to this place because it was less expensive and at this point I would try anything to get my dog taken care of. Prior to going to this vet, I was trying to find any means to pay for her care and was searching the internet when I came across CareCredit.com - a credit program for things like this - I applied and was denied, but it was worth a shot. I did take my puppy to vet and was quietly appalled at the condition, but would do what needed to be done to get my puppy fixed. I wasn't impressed with the staff, the long wait time, the flies in the room, etc...but again, something is better than nothing. Jump ahead to her 2 week follow-up...while waiting (for a long time) for us to be called in, a man and wife came out with their dog and the women was visibily upset. She noticed my puppy had a cast and said her dog had an injured leg as well and she was just told it was going to cost about $900 for surgery and just wasn't sure how they were going to pay for it. I mentioned to her that in my research I came across CareCredit and she might try that...she was very thankful. She was called to the front to pay for her visit and the man sitting there said that they didn't take care credit but a lot of places did. That they didn't because there were fees involved, etc. but it was a good thing. Apparently she said she might have to go elsewhere - I am not sure. I was called back FINALLY - put in a room to wait another 10 minutes, when Dr. Suzanne Johnson came through the door, turned to me and looking over her glasses and said "I hear you are telling poeple out there to go to another vet". I was absolutely shock and told I said no such thing. She said well you told that lady about care credit and we don't take that here. I told her I was just trying to help someone get their dog taken care of, I didn't know they didn't take the card. Vet Johnson was not hearing that - she said that is what she was told. OMG - after of minute of discussing this - I said I am just leaving then and she said that would be best. I went to the counter and ask the man why he told her I said to go to another vet and he said we don't take care credit here, but admitted that I didn't say what Vet Johnson said he said and would talk to her...I again said I was just trying to help someone upset get their dog taken care of..blah blah blah...we mixed words then Scruffy Vet Johnson came out and they both mumbled to each like I was nuts and went about their business. I took my puppy and left that crappy place for good. Bottom line money is their pocket is more important than taking any means necessary to get an animal cared for. DON"T GO TO THIS PLACE - it is uncaring, dirty, and that Vet lady is twisted in her thinking and not a very nice person. Oh ya, whoever that man was - shame on you!

Dr. Johnsen, and her staff are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been around. No other doctor can come any where close to her knowledge skill or caring! She is the old kind of doctor that works way too hard for way too many hours because she truly loves her patients. Too many times the news has not been good. I honestly think it is just as hard on her as me. She always has a plan, and spends lots of time supporting you and your best friend. In the good times she enjoys playing with your best friend as much as you do. Her staff is very hard working friendly, and caring. I could talk forever and not say enough good!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course the staff of the hospital will write good reveiws. They need the job. But ripping people off and being dishonest will only bite you back. This hospital is inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. After doing some investigation on the Vet Suzanne. I only have to take a look at the way she lives. If she doesn't care for her pets, its only obvious she won't care for yours. With her having arthiritis, I wonder how she is able to perform such surgeries. I won't say more. You can only figure it out for yourself.. This is an awful place

VAN AKEN IS AWESOME!I would like to give my personal accounts of my multiple experiences with Van Aken. I find the front office cozy and they have coffee, soda machines, and TVs with the Dog Whisperer(I love him)! The girls at the front are sooo busy, but they always make time(with a smile) to take care of my needs. The parking in front is limited; however, they have plenty of space in the back (no problems). I find the teks friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. Let me tell ya'll, I have seen many Vets in my time and Dr. Johnsen is AWESOME!!! She listens to my concerns, thoroughly examines my babies, and then tells me what she recommends. She has this connection and genuine love for animals. I completely trust her and her staff with my babies. One more thing I must say about this Godsend of a hospital, they have the best prices for their services. When I get my bill, I am always shocked and always ask "Are you sure that's all?". I always send my friends and family there for their pet's health care. From shots to emergencies, I have always heard great things from my friends. THIS IS THE BEST VET IN TOWN!

My kitty Jack was taken there to get his first set of shots, to get fixed and to have surgery on his gums...they did a good job when it came to the surgery, but other than that, I have nothing else good to say about this clinic. The clinic seemed dirty, the parking(what parking?), the staff was not out going or friendly, and Dr. Johnson is my worst complaint...she was not friendly, and never looked me in the eye when talking to me about Jack's care. To top it off, when the front office girl brought Jack out after his surgery, she didn't take time to care and hold his carrier properly, and she just let it swing back and forth with poor Jack inside. She acted like she was handing me a bag of potatoes. I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND this clinic to any animal lover!! If you want a great place, I DO recommend Desert Sage Vet. Clinic. You will get your money's worth and very friendly staff and Doctors!

I have taken my pets to the Van Aken Pet Hospital for almost 10 years and I believe Dr. Susanne Johnson is a top notch Vet. She has cared for my dogs and has helped me add years onto my aged dog. The distance was so far from my home and when I retired I no longer drove past the hospital. I decided to change Vet Clinics at that time, but came back to Van Aken. The other clinic was good, but not as good as Van Aken.

My fur son Junior is 12 years old and has been in general good health. Our vet of many years retired and I had a need, a very good friend recommended Dr. Johnson at Van Aken and the rest is history, we were treated well and Junior was treated as a family member not just a pet. A very positive experience for us and I would not hesitate to visit Van Aken and Dr. Johnson again. I have and will continue to recommend them. I know taking my babies to the vet is always an emotional experience as they are so important to me. I feel we found compassion and care at Van Aken.... from the office staff to the doctors.
