Just went for a quick lunch there and decided on the Vegetable Pizza from the cafe section. For $6.99 I got a delicious, thin crust, burnt in the right places, fresh tasting, perfectly individually-sized (for a big eater like me) pizza

This place is awesome!

Best butter cookies, which happen to be my favourite!

It seems every time I go there, I get the same cashier, I believe her name is Jean. She is always very nice and delightful!

We were at the Pasadena il Fornaio over the memorial day weekend and had an amazing dinner. Our server went out of his way to accomodate our food sensitivities. They have an extensive wine list which we found to be right up our alley.

Crazy good! I grew up eating Italian food, and it is hard to find quality stuff. When somebody suggested we come here, I scoffed. "It's a chain - no way it will be good." After the bruschetta, Ravioli alla Lucana, Linguine Mare Chiaro

1. Most recently, my parents had reserved a room for an important anniversary dinner. After a long phone conversation the day before and a terrible fight ten minutes before their guests arrived, they were not given a room, another table, or even an apology or an acknowledgement of the mistake that was made.

Basically, they had double booked and they just disregarded our reservation. Despite the fact that there was a room open, we were not given the room since there was another reservation for the room in an hour. We left after the lead hostess left for twenty minutes to "call the manager." During this whole ordeal, a table for four repeatedly asked Lindsey for their table. They were told each time that they had to wait, despite the evidence to the contrary.

We left and went to Mi Piace just a block down. The service was much better. The Bolognese pasta was excellent.

2. Two nights earlier, my boyfriend and I went to Il Fornaio. We were told there was a 25 minute wait for the patio. We waited 35 minutes and then went to Lindsey (yeah her again) and she said it would be another 5 minutes for a table on the patio. After another 10 minutes and threat to leave the restaurant, we were told our table was ready. We walked over to the table closest to the kitchen door, which was not on the patio. (And of course, the table had been empty the whole time we had been there.) When I complained and mentioned Lindsey's own acknowledgement of our request for a patio table, we were told that we had to wait to speak with ?Queen? Lindsey. We went to Twin Palms and received great service. We were seated in a matter of seconds.

I have eaten at the Beverly Hills and Santa Monica branches of this restaurant. They have good food and good service, but the Pasadena branch suffers terribly from rude and disorganized management. Avoid it, especially, if you want to organize an event. There are several other Italian restaurants in Pasadena.

Hi,
I decided to try this 'restaurant' for my birthday celebration.
It was the worse experience I've ever had! The service was slow and very inneficient. Half of the entree's listed were 'unavailable at this time', as were the best choices from the wine list. Even the flat bottled water could not be ordered!
When it came time to have the cake, they brought me a cake belonging to ANOTHER PERSON!

Throughout all of this, the manager was very impolite and unhelpful.
Quite possibly the worse service I have ever suffered through!!
Never go there!

The food was mediocre. There wasn't a "wow" factor in any of my meals. I went there with a big group of people and we just didn't seem satisfied with the meal. I would probably go back if it was convenient. The dessert wasn't bad. There are other better Italian resturants in the area.

Yes, it's a chain restaurant, but Il Fornaio does its level best to transcend that label. We dropped in for dinner tonight, and were seated immediately (although in a back corner table that was incredibly cramped). The service was friendly, patient and detail-oriented without being fussy. We tried two dishes from the monthly special menu (they feature dishes and wines from a different region of Italy every month) and both were excellent -- innovative flavors beyond the usual lasagna, pesto penne, etc. fare that you see at most Italian restaurants. The beef tenderloin risotto w/ crispy shallots and gorgonzola cream was so good, I wished I had ordered it instead of just tasting a bit from my boyfriend's plate. We've had mixed experiences before with the monthly special menu, but were pleasantly surprised by how good both dishes we ordered were this time around. The wine selection is excellent as well, as we both enjoyed glasses of Italian varietals that we've never seen before. "Il Fornaio" means "the Baker" and yes, the bread is always great too. All in all, I'm a happy diner, and I'll be sure to be back.

Although this restaurant does manage to render itself a Fine Dining Italian Establishment, it is at the expense of the authenticity and the prices. I am a firm believer that Italian dining should be ample portions and great prices in that red-checkered-tablecloth, mom-and-pop sort of way. The cuisine here is good, exquisite in some cases, but the vibe is corporate and the bills are high.

Il Fornaio has very tasty dishes at prices that match it's great location and food quality. I've been there for lunch and dinner and have not been disappointed with the food. The wait was long though and the service could have been a bit better.

A couple of months ago Il Fornaio introduced a cutom salad bar lunch service and I have become a regular customer. It's a pretty good deal - 3 different types of salad and five mix-ins (I usually go for tofu, olives, walnuts, beets and brocolli) for under $6. Everything is very fresh and delicious. They have pretty good sandwiches too.

I've had lunch at the pricey indoor restaurant, great food, fabulous staff, nice portions, wonderful menu.

But the cafe located on the side, is a jewel in this pricey downtown area! They have great coffee and pastries or fresh baked bread. Come in early for a great sandwich or salad, they sell out fast! The salads have shaved parmesan cheese, olives and great viniagrette. The sandwiches on homemade bread and great meats & cheeses are favorites! Prices are low, under $5.00 most items.

PROS: Great selection &quality.. you feel like you're in a cafe on vacation

While the restaurant may be a bit pricey for lunch, I often find myself going to the cafe portion of Il Fornario for pizzas. They usually give you a relatively large pizza (for 1 or two people) for $5! The pizza is actually quite good! I also recommend the Italian Sodas for $1.50. They have a variety of flavors. Also, the desserts are tasty. This is the place to go if you feel like you want to eat on the patio with friends during lunch.

The food is always good, my favorite is the Butternut Squash Ravioli with Sage butter. The outdoor patio is definitely the way to go, inside seating is too loud. A bit crowded and always a wait. Still, it is at the top of my list of restaurants in Pasadena even though it is a chain.

once you get past the scatterbrained hostess who always forgets write down your name on the list, hence sometimes forget that you're even there, the restaurant is great. the servers are wonderful and the food is great. the menu is nothing too fancy; just simple classic dishes like gnocchi and ravioli. their zabaione alla gritti is just delish~
just remember that this is a chain restaurant. it will be crowded, noisy, and sometimes filled with obnoxious teens trying to have "a mature date."
definitely not recommended for a romantic date unless you reserve a table at the indoor patio which is more quieter.

The food here is OK - not bad, just OK, but it doesn't really stand out to me. Although I must say the kids menu has HUGE portions. I couldn't believe it when my son got a cheese pizza which I thought could feed the both of us. The waiter told me that the kids portions are for an eight-year-old. That's one big eight-year-old!!
They do have private rooms that can be reserved for larger parties. I hosted a baby shower here and the staff was very helpful in helping me select a menu.
Patio is also a nice place to sit when the weather is nice.
Anyway I keep going back here for the ambience.

The lighting of the place makes it expansive and breathable--very light and airy. Then comes the great variety of Italian dishes. I would recommend the rabbit or the lamb if you are all interested in somethign savory. The wine list is great as well. If you just want to drop in for a drink, I love how long the bar is, all the better for flirting. In the back on the restaurant, you have access to a great bakery and coffeehouse, so you can drop by for a quick pick-me-up to go. On warmer days, opt for sitting outside where you can people wacth all the movie goers and shoppers.

PROS: delectible food, good service, great wine, cappucinos that deliver on taste and foam, great ambiance
CONS: parking in Pasadena makes it necessary to opt for valet

Il Fornaio has good Italian food at a reasonable price. The decor is very nice, and I love their patio seating. However, last time I ate there, it was a bit odd. They asked us if sitting outside was ok, and we said that was fine. They proceeded to walk us WAY out into the courtyard and seat us. We thought this was odd, as we had never sat out quite that far before. The service out there was TERRIBLE. It took forever for our waitress to even notice that we were there. Not only that, but we had the pleasant fragrance of nearby cigar-smokers (while we were trying to eat!!!). Then the live entertainment started, a jazz band with a volume that far exceeded either of our voices, completely eliminating any possibility for us to have a normal conversation. Finally, we asked if we could be seated inside. They agreed, and once we moved inside, everything worked like clockwork and dinner was delcious. So, great restaurant... just don't let them sit you out in the courtyard area.

I'll come here only if the occasion is a special one. We dined here on Valentine's Day '03 and it wasn't bad. The patio was filled, but the food wasn't all that great anymore. The whole Il Fornaio experience wasn't the same as it was in the mid 90's...even their menu shrunk (in variety, not in price)!

best $5 lunch in Old Town. Go to the cafe entrance (not the restaurant entrance) on the side of the building and they will make you a fresh vegetarian or mozzarella pizza. Dinner tends to be v. nice creative but well-made food as well, but up a notch in cost from the cafe.

My date and I both got specials, ahi and duck. The ahi wasn't fresh (grey spots), and was extremely bland (not even salt & pepper). It was supposed to have spring vegetables, which was mostly just celery. The duck was tough, and tasted like it was previously frozen. The service was good, as in not poor. Overall, the food was disappointing but the experience was average.

This has good Italian sytle dishes, but it is not the Italian ambience you might be looking for. It's better for lunch. Their bread is the best on earth, served fresh and free on your table. They do have very good pasta dishes and excellent desserts. It's not small and private, but it is good food.

I was anxious to try this restaurant based on reviews I've read. My first time there was for my birthday. A friend of mine went out of his way to make reservations and tried to make arrangements with the serving staff to make the occasion special. We waited a long time, despite having reservations (Wed. night). The food looked appetizing, but it was bland. I can't even remember what I ordered. We had difficulty flagging down our server. It may as well have been an ordinary day because nothing else happened. No birthday wishes, no dessert (as my friend had arranged). I was very disappointed. I gave Il Fornaio another chance. I went there for lunch with coworkers. Service was poor, my steak was undercooked and rubbery. Everyone fought for the salt to try to make their food more palatable. Maybe the other locations have better service/food. Not this one!

Pros: Good Ambience

Cons: Poor Service, Bland Food, Parking Structure

When I stepped into the Il Fornaio in Orange County, I felt like I was home again. There were several Italian speaking waiters and waitressess, who greeted us right away and took us to our table. The bread, served with wine and olive oil was very nostalgic and our meal was impeccable. My very favorite ristorante outside of Italy.

Overall, this is not a bad restuarant. What can make it better? The food. Don't get me wrong. The food is fine but it should be better to match the competing restuarants nearby and for the value. However, when you are in a pinch, he head here for mediocre meals.

There's always a good-looking crowd here. The bar is fun. Seating is a little on the tight side, or cozy if you like. There's no too many entrees that'll knock your socks off, mostly decent to not-quite-there. I do enjoy the salmon carpaccio and the breads.

Il Fornaio is the kind of place you go to when you know exactly what you're craving, and you're not in the mood for surprises. The dinner menu is solid and food is well-presented and flavorful. For those who work in the area, the take-out lunch counter is ideal for a quick salad or sandwich. Do try to arrive early, by 1pm the pickings are slimmer. Recommended: Fornaio salad and the eggplant sandwich.

The restaurant does a nice job of upscale, but slightly corporate Italian food. A nice wood-fired oven makes for crispy pizza, and the desert cart is fully stocked. Their private rooms are a fun place for a large group to have a dinner or brunch.

But it's the little cafe on the backside of the place (opposite the Metropolitan Museum store) that's the real find. A great place for a quick sandwich or salad, some baked goods or a cup of coffee that's reasonably-priced. Also, they will validate your parking for the Union garage (across Fair Oaks from the One Colorado Plaza), which can save you some bucks.
