Allan's is a refreshing change from the chain pet shops. Been in business a long time and the shop shows its years. Reasonable prices. What really makes Allan's special though are the staff - friendly, helpful and can provide you with the information you need for a successful aquarium. Other pet items as well.

Allan's Aquarium and Pet Center is located in Santa Monica. It's a tiny shop but has lots of supplies inside the store to choose from to take care of your fishes. They have a wide assortment of salt and freshwater fishes. The prices are average. The staff is helpful in choosing the right food and supplies.

I don't really know why, but I've found it surprisingly difficult to find a decent reptile supply store in Los Angeles. Most pet stores either look at you with disgust when you mention needing food for your snake, or they have no idea what you're talking about, or they have reptiles but keep them in appalling conditions, or they charge three prices for inferior products.

Allan's doesn't do any of these things. The animals are kept in decent, if not fantastic setups. The staff is reasonably knowledgeable and usually helpful. Supplies are decently priced, and (best of all) they have food and supplies for larger as well as smaller species. Yeah, I wish the place were a little cleaner, and I wish the manager were somewhat more pleasant, but I'm glad to have Allan's around when my mail-order supplies don't come in on time.

I have lived nearby Allan's Aquarium and Pet Center for many years. What I like about this business is the convenience, they offer dog bones that I am not able to find elsewhere (peanut butter, chicken, beef flavored). They are in a bag with numerous bones. If someone else offered them I would go there.

They are good for those who require exotic birds, fish supplies.

Prices are reasonable. The employees are pleasant and helpful at the counter, though I've never seen them walk around and offer assistance as you will find in larger pet stores.

What turned me off was the owner or manager of the store criticizing employees within my earshot. Once I run into that I rarely return to a business. I don't think there is any excuse to put down your employees. If you do need to discuss something private with them, then do it in private.

So, I am giving this pet stores a satisfactory rating. If it is convenient for you and you need what they provide then by all means go there, but there are other stores that provide more supplies and treat their employees with respect.

PROS: Fish, bird supplies, pet food
CONS: Poor treatment of employees in front of customers
