I've been to this place 2 or 3 times, with the cheap 3-massage deal, and I don't recall having a good experience at this location. I was there a couple weeks ago, and the guy who did my deep tissue massage ignored my instructions- I wanted

I am sorry to tell you... but this place, the quality of therapist AND receptionist (specially) are going down and down. I live in Santa Monica for last 17 years and I started going this place about 8-10 years ago. People were so nice

I had been dealing with a severely soar neck & back and decided to call in to make an appointment today. I was able to get a time 15 from when I called. My Therapist was Jazz and she is absolutely amazing!! I left feeling amazing and by neck was cured.

Pros: Jazz, she is an amazing therapist!

Cons: atmosphere. It's no day spa...

I like that I can call the day of and that they always have a space for me. This last visit I had the pleasure of getting Danny as my massage therapist and he was AMAZING! If you like deep tissue (or Thai) you have to try him.

Pros: Talented Therapists and a Clean Facility

Cons: Lacks Spa Amenities

After relocating to Santa Monica I longed for a little bit of bliss close by and found the Massage Place chain. From the first phone call and making the appointment, I should have known. I was truly astounded at the receptionist. She was downright angry and rude. I thought she must have been having a bad day and I just wanted to feel good. I didn't let it bother me. At first. Upon my arrival, I found out the massage therapist was running 15 minutes late. Still not bothered. I got a 35 minute massage because the therapist had a client after me and couldn't do a full hour. Ok. I was charged for the full hour and told the receptionist that I only had 35 minutes. She said I was wrong and get this, that my watch must be broken. I asked the receptionist kindly if she could discount me for the lateness and shortness of the massage. She gave me a $10 off next visit pass.
I gave the therapist a 20% tip because that's just what I do and the receptionist asked me if their was something wrong with the massage or if I was just giving 20% because the guy was late. There is actually signage at The Massage Place with suggested gratuity.
I gave within the 'norm' and was insulted that she would talk gratuity with me after all that.
I gave my pass to a friend with a warning. She took the pass and her experience was way worse than mine and we don't have enough room here to go into that.
The Massage Place should be ashamed of what they are putting into Santa Monica. It's the opposite of what massage, healing and feeling good is all about. Sad.

Pros: It's not worth the price

Cons: Everything

I work at a few of these places, and I was curious as to what the reviews would say..I think it's funny that someone who considers themself a good tipper(because they are the "east coast", of course they are) would think that a $10 tip on a $44 massage is a good thing...you obviously have never given a massage. It isn't bad, but it isn't great. Please feel free to go to a spa and spend a minimal of $115 dollars, to get a massage and a steam, then tip 20% on that. You are correct that is a GREAT TIP, but why when you are spending $44 dollars on a massage and no steam, you find it acceptable to tip$10??? You are tipping the therapist for the massage, not the spa. I have had NUMEROUS spa massages throughout my life, and I would still rather go to The Massage Place, spend $44 on a massage, then tip $20, and still have spent less then half of what I would have at a spa. Not every therapist here has been my favorite, but I went to someone different the next time, and have been amazed quite a few times. Do I expect a $20 tip every massage, of course not, but it really validates an hours work when a client recognizes that unlike restaurant staff, I only have one client an hour. I am not making "20%" off 5 clients at a time, with a new group of 5 clients every hour. The owners keep the prices so low, to keep the places busy, and in return we get to keep working, and pay our bills. We live off of the tips our clients leave us. Massage isn't something that can be done like most jobs, the body just can't take it. So next time you go get a massage please consider the fact that your therapist, whether they are the best massage you have ever had or not, is just trying to do what you do...keep the roof over their head, food on the table, gas in the car, and trying to help make the people in this world a little less disgruntled!!!

I went to a "Massage Place" near my house in Venice (Main Street) frequently for a few years because it was close and cheap. One day after a mix-up on the part of the receptionist (she told me my appointment was 15 minutes later than it was) I was informed that I would still be charged in full, and worse, I was subjected to the most vile and dismissive, incredibly rude and un-professional behavior I may have ever experienced at any establishment ever. I actually really mean that. She had no sense of treating a repeat customer with any degree of fairness because of her error. She did nothing but repeat ad nauseam that they always charge the full amount no matter what happens, apparently even if the mistake was on their end. It was shockingly rude. I would highly recommend avoiding this place at all costs. Sure, you might get a cheap massage, but who cares when you could be treated like this.

If you are looking for a place to relax, go somewhere else.

My husband and I live in the area and have gone to the Massage Place several times ? we found two providers that we liked and have seen them about 4 times. At my last visit, my provider was a little gruff with me before and during the treatment, but I thought he was just having a bad day. At the end of the treatment he was adamant that I read the tipping notification sign that is on the back of the treatment door ? in the announcement he very clearly outlined that he expected at least a $20 tip on a $44 service ? a 45% + tip!!! I am from the East Coast, so I am well aware of tipping etiquette ? and 45% is not standard. And bottom line, he was gruff during the treatment and a tip should be left at the discretion of the customer based on the level of service provided. Still, I left a good $10 tip (over 20%). But it gets better ? yesterday I made an appointment with this provider and I was called and told that he would not see me because I don?t tip at the $20+ rate!!! I was floored. If you want to make a tip/service fee mandatory, then do so and be up front about it ? but don?t advertise $44 massages and then refuse service to people ? that is just bad business. This is a no-frills massage establishment ? I would rather put my $64 towards a nice spa experience massage and not be treated so rudely. As I said, we live in the area and we will be spreading the word about the incredibly rude service we received.

I've been there a couple of times. First to get a massage which was good. The second was to get a facial from Lisa which was wonderful! Everything is reasonably priced, but that manager named Carol is the most horrible creature I've ever encountered! She hadn't really offended me directly, but just sitting there and witnessing her talk on the phone and to customers is quite an experience. She's very rude and condescending. She causes a static vibe to the whole place. She needs to sit in some back office and not be seen nor heard!

Girl a front desk rude and indifferent. They were 10 min. late in getting me to the massage room, so I ended up with an 80min. massage versus the 90 min. massage that I paid for. I had asked for a Deep Tissue Massage, but received nothing of the kind; pressue was not good, strokes were uneven, therapist did not massage shoulders, back, or neck properly. Hardly any pressure was applied when legs & arms were massaged. I now have a huge bruise on the lower left side of my back because she massaged the bone -- where no muscle or fat is! I cannot sleep on that side of my body. I went ahead and tipped $10 because I didn't want to cause a scene or make an issue of the entire experience. I have had my share of good massages in my life, and this was NOT one of them!

I have never left an online review before, but since I value online reviews to assist me in my consumer decision-making, I decided that it was time that I return the favor. If you decide to try the Massage Place out, hopefully you be lucky enough to get a competent therapist who knows what they are doing...I suggest you go to a place with a good reputation, competent staff and experienced massage therapists. Unfornately, it has been my expereince that, especially in Southern California, it is difficult to find good service for a good price, so you might need to spend the extra bucks to get a quality massage elsewhere. Wow, i just noticed that I am missing of my diamond earring stubs...I wonder if this got 'lost' at The Massage Place...I am sooo not happy right now...

Pros: none, really

Cons: rude staff, incompetent massage therapists

I'm not sure what the other reviewers have encountered, but it's always been a pleasant experience for me at the Massage Place. Very good massages, friendly staff, NO pressure to buy products (what products?). Also, Lisa at the Petite Spa gives the best facial ever!

There is no "atmosphere", but it's better than paying double to walk on marble floors and sit next to some tacky, broke-down fountain.

I have to agree with previous reviews. Although there are one or two good therapist available, the atmosphere is not enjoyable and it is very noisy, which is why I am no longer seeing them.

Save yourself my mistake and go up the street to Strike a Balance. This place comes equipped with a rude, loud receptionist, no atmosphere. Although there is one excellent therapist, the atmosphere is so poor that it's pointless. This is a place for talking and cell phones ringing not for a peaceful experience in a quiet environment.

The massage therapist was talented and personable, we got along well. BUT- the owner was the most condescending, pedantic, shockingly rude person I have ever met at a service establishment. Their prices are inexpensive for a massage, 44/hr, which is good for me considering that I'm a grad student. After the massage, which was decent, I left a tip of 15%. The owner then 'explained', or lectured me, that she expected me to leave a 10-20 dollar tip. Simply put, I don't think my tip was unreasonable and her belittling tone really ruined any relaxation I could have had there.

The massage I had yesterday was the most disappointing massage of my life (out of a total of 6 professional massages). I don't think my therapist, Zoltan, knew what he was doing. Also, I asked for a deep tissue massage when I made my appointment, and told him in person when I arrived that I liked deeper work, and what I received was not a deep tissue massage nor was it deep. I'm not sure what it was, but he said beforehand that he did reflexology and range of motion work. The massage involved a lot of shaking. I felt somewhat more relaxed afterwards, but this may have been more because I was focusing on breathing deeply for an hour and laying down than because of the massage itself. Today, less than 24 hours later, I do not feel any better-I still have the same problems. I was hoping to express my disappointment to the front desk staff but the therapist was nearby. I did say that my massage was "okay" and expected to be asked if I wasn't satisfied but I wasn't. $54 down the drain.

I have had better experiences with Gustavo and Wendy. They are both quite good, although not as good as the professionals at The Massage Therapy Center. I have also heard good things about Carlos and Elena.

PROS: Inexpensive.
CONS: I think it's a shot in the dark to just call this place and end up with anyone. I would only go on the detailed recommendation of a friend or review for a specific therapist.

Also, while the base price is cheap, you are supposed to tip $10-20 for an hour massage, so expect to pay $54-64. I can't imagine tipping $20 at this place, though.
