My wife and I have breakfast here at 4-5 times a year. It's a fun place to bring guests from out-of-town.
My favorite dish is the French Toast. Second most favorite: Eggs Benedict. My wife loves their huge omelettes.
I've never been here for lunch or dinner, so can't comment on that.
Be FOREWARNED: there is usually a line of people waiting out front. If you have the time to stick it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised. But I understand that waiting in line is not everyone's idea of a great way to start breakfast.

I have been to Marston's twice in the last 5 months. The first time was with a group of nine people on a Friday for Lunch. We had reservations, and were seated upon arrival. All of us were happy with our selections and the service was great. The Second time was on a Saturday afternoon with a friend. I had the French toast which was amazing and my friend had the an Omelet (Denver). This is a great place for a quick lunch with a few girlfriends. Not the best place for large groups.

I have never had such a terrible interpretation of pancakes?ever. Really, they were so thin that they were closer to a crepe and they were also gummy and undercooked. I could not eat them. My boyfriend had an omelet that did not impress him at all. The texture was weird for an omelet, like it had been scrambled overly much in the pan before going on to its life as an omelet. It had an identity crisis.

So, the staff is friendly and Marston's appears to be incredibly popular as it's always packed, but if you can't cook an omelet or pancakes properly, you shouldn't open for breakfast.

This hole in the wall restaurant is one of my favorite breakfast places. It is a great spot for anyone who enjoys a good breakfast such as a tall glass of orange juice, eggs cooked to perfection, or ?grandma?s oatmeal? that is to die for. The prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly. The only setback is that the restaurant is small so the earlier you get there the better. With their variety of choices and home style ambiance you will feel like you are enjoying breakfast right in your own home!

Reading some of the reviews, I wonder what they consider as great food? Comparing the food here to Denny's is, frankly, absurd. Marston's food is utterly superb.. great pancakes, great sausages. Their service has been spotty over the years, although it's improved recently, the wait is long, and their prices are inflated, but I can't disagree more with people who say their food is mediocre. For those with the ability to discern good food, I would highly recommend this place. I can't vouch for their service, though.

the blueberry pancakes are a must! they're thin, tasty, and they give you plenty to fill you up. we also tried the french toast which i would also recommend. it has a nice crunchy texture because it's covered in corn flakes. everything was great there, food, service, and ambience. the one thing that i wouldn't recommend are their omelletes.

I can't say enough about Marstons. Quite possibly the best find in LA.

Been there for breakfast, for lunch and dinner. Had a wedding reception there - they rented the place out to us, and custom made our menu. Jim, the chef there, asked us what ingredients we liked and began to suggest dishes that would involve those flavors. Granted, you're not going to get to customize their menu for regular dining, but you don't need to. It's all phenomenal! Valentine's Day includes a rose for your lady, btw - tip for the guys out there - this is a romantic spot to have dinner. Marstons is a cozy little house and blows away all those carbon copy chain places.

The biggest complaint people will put on here is waiting and parking, and I agree that at the wrong time, you can get hit with the worst of both. Marstons has a pretty small lot. No worries, just drive around to Raymond - at most you've got a block or two to walk. As for the wait, I can't give away my secret, but I guarantee there is a time on Saturday morning when you can get 10min instead of 40. And even if I was to wait 40 min, the cornflake crusted, light and fluffy french toast or macadamia nut pancakes or savory omelet choices are worth the wait. Fantastic place!

I don't even know why I'm telling you this... the more people who discover this gem, the harder it will be to get a table. So um, nevermind...

When there's no wait, Marston's is a delightful place to dine at - rather it be their generously portioned breakfasts (I can never quite finish that omelet or the stack of big pancakes), their delicious lunches (my favorite is the Pasadena salad with chicken, avocado and candied pecans mixed right in with fresh greens) or their more elegant dinners.

That being said, the only problem here is with parking, which is quite limited.

Went here with a friend. Ordered the Veggie Omelette. It was huge. It also came with potatoes and toast. The veggies could have been chopped smaller, but other than that it was delicious. Didn't really have to wait since it was a weekday. I would go there again. It is worth the wait. The couple of times I went during the weekend, I didn't have to wait that long.

they act like they are doing you a favor. we waited and waited and waited and when I finally got the waitress attention she brought the manager over to dress me down "is there a problem here?" yes I said we have been waiting a long (unreasonable) time for our food and she snapped back "well it takes awhile!!!" 30 minutes for eggs? no silverwear? no water? no refills no coffee?

avoid this place.

I demand really good food at a restaurant and that is what I get at Marston's. The menu is so perfect it is difficult to chose--french toast, a fabulous salad, etc. Sometimes very crowded because of the great food, cute restaurant, great service.

Disregard what another reviewer below wrote about Marston's being closed on Sundays - that is actually their BIGGEST, busiest day!
The food is tasty, salty, and big. Prices are OK considering the portions. But it's only really worth visiting when you can get right in. During busy times (weekends) the wait can be over 1/2 hour (in my experience), and I'm willing to bet others wait a lot longer depending on the timing.
The service tries to be great, but they are just too busy and in a hurry to really make it work for me.

PROS: Good food, good breakfast menu selection
CONS: Loooooooooooong wait. Cramped environment.

The wait was excessively long for a cramped table to eat mediocre food. Might as well and stay home and cook yourself.

We were the 3rd table got seated at the lunch time on 10/13/05. We couldn't get any service for about 20 minutes while everyone else who were seated much later got their food. Make matter worse, they totally forgot about our order and waited for another 30 minutes to get our food. It seems like we were the only one who got no services, food & no apology. The food is decent but will I go back to get mistreated? NEVER AGAIN!

I had their famous French Toast for breakfast, as it's overly deep fried so it's almost hard to bite on it. It's so bland that it's way over priced!
I also ordered Denver omlet as I can get a much better one from Denny's as the egg was overcooked & dried.
I mentioned the same thing on their survay card. This's for sure a place I won't go back for as well I'll ask all of my friends NOT to waste their time & $$$ there.

Although Marston's is known for breakfast, the restaurant also serves a fine dinner. The food is always thoughtfully prepared and unfussy. Ingredients are always fresh and the service is friendly. It is a wonderful antidote to loud, noisy, hyper-trendy, overpriced, dime-a-dozen restaurants found throughout the L.A. area. The bottom line is that you get good food, well-prepared, served in a comfortable space - criteria that I apply to any restaurant where I will return.

I took my friend to Marston's for her birthday. Neither of us had ever been. She ordered their chicken linquine, which had a nice scoop of goat cheese on top. It was halfway decent. I ordered their chicken dumplings with squash and mushrooms in a soy ginger sauce. I thought, "This sounds exciting." However, the chicken dumplings are identical in appearance, smell, and taste to the frozen chicken sold at Trader Joe's. Not only that, but I only got six of these dumplings. The Trader Joe's serving size is nine. Luckily, my special lady friend had linguine to spare (which, as mentioned, was halfway decent). I would have starved without that linguine. The soy ginger sauce was too sweet, and nothing special. I don't plan on ever going back. There are many better choices in Pasadena at half the price.

I have often eaten at Marston's and found Janelle, the waitress who is most often there, to be delightful and friendly. She always checks on how we are doing and makes sure everything is hot and tasty. The dinner at Marston's does have a limited menu, but I find everything on it, from the Cordiera Salad to the Mac and Cheese with Smoked Chicken, to be quite good. The home made chocolate sauce for the Brownie Sundae is to die for. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, unlike a lot of the pretentious "Hollywood" places out west.

This restaurant is so overrated. There are very long waiting lines, few tables inside, a very limited menu, and prices less than commensurate with the quality of the meal. Our entrees arrived 35 minutes after we were seated, the waitress was extremely rude, and the restaurant itself was extremely loud. At least four customers were overhead complaining about the service and the food; in three cases, their meals were "on the house." Definitely not worth the time, energy, or money.

I went to Marston's last year for Mother's Day and I thought it was great. The staff was very friendly and the brunch wasn't too expensive. I'm not sure about the rest of the year, but on Mother's Day, this can't be beat! Get a reservation!

This place is amazing! It's really small so you will have to wait for awhile almost any morning, but it is SO worth it. I have only been there for breakfast but I think that they serve lunch too. Their breakfast is amazing! I took my mom and her sister and they both had the largest omlets I have ever seen. I had the macademia nut pancakes and they were amazing. They were pretty sweet and you really could share them with another person because they were so big and fluffy. It was really nice to sit out on the patio but you can't do that if your party is more than about 4 people becuase it's not very large. They can accomodate larger groups inside though.

This is one of my favorite places to get breakfast. Their french toast is my favorite. They also make good oatmeal and give you the raisins, brown sugar, cream on the side. It's good to get there when they open because there is usually a wait. Really cute cottage style ambience. Prices are reasonable. Parking on the side of the building or on the street.

CONS: can have a long wait

If you've got a few hours to kill and have no other way of spending your Sunday morning, head to Marstons.
The wait there is usually over an hour for brunch. Granted, the food is decent, but it's not worth the wait. Service is spotty and they try to get you out as soon as possible to pack the joint.
Location is loud and off Walnut traffic will drive you nuts as you wait for your table. If you don't dine out a lot and are easily impressed with omelets and pancakes then go ahead and order your eggs w/ bacon. I'll skip it.

I've only been here for dinner--it's very delicious. Dinner is served Wed-Sat only. It's comfort food--chicken, fish, pasta, mac and cheese, etc. Before the meal, fresh warm bread came with herbed butter. The menu changes seasonally; I had wild mushroom risotto with asparagus, spinach with slices of fresh buffalo mozzarella. It was absolutely amazing--perfect consistency, light (tomato based, not cream based), and the veggies were fresh and crisp. My friend had wild mushroom/ricotta ravioli which were equally as delicious. For dessert, we had a brownie with ice cream; melted chocolate came in its own little carafe. Incredibly rich and warm, and not too sweet. All portions were perfectly sized--no super-sized platters here.

Never again will I schlep to Pasadena for this overrated grease fest. The famous French toast is like eating petrified fish sticks with syrup. The omelet almost slid off my plate from the grease. Bacon, room, and coffee were all cold; service was mediocre. Wait staff, saying, TAHDAH! when refilling my beverage doesnt make me forget that its been sitting empty for ten minutes. Martsons, your 15 minutes are up.

Pros: Far from home

Cons: Overpriced, Overrated, overpraised

.

This place is really good. Cute little restaurant.
You have to try their french toast and blueberry pancakes!!

Everyone in Pasadena knows that Marston's is not about the food. With a location convenient to city hall it's no surprise that a few important folk will dine there from time to time. Now don't get me wrong, it's not a chain place and the food is somewhat decent, but I contend that most folks don't get out for breakfast or brunch as much as they do other meals, and I would hate to see them waste an opportunity to go to one of the other great places in the area. Marston's has started serving dinner within the last couple of years, but I've never been.

You will find me here every Saturday. The food is great (I haven't had one bad thing ever!) the service is excellent and the people in general are so friendly. The atmosphere inside and out, is charming. I have been a patron for almost 20 years, and goseveral times a week. The best breakfasts in town - you have to try the french toast, it's a Marston's classic!

oh my french toast. this breakfast is worth breaking any diet you are on. the cornflake covered french toast is to die for. any of the breakfast items are great. they have great salads for lunch. the only deal is the parking stinks - if the lot is full you have to park around the corner and hoof in. the wait on the weekend is anywhere from 10-40 minutes.

but well worth the wait! enjoy.

This is a very well-known and loved restaurant in Pasadena. The food is good, and the restaurant is especially loved for its yummy salads. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but make sure to check times before going. There is usually a pretty long wait to get in. Be sure to note that the parking is bad. The parking lot holds 5-7 cars, and the rest of the customers park on the street. On a hot day, also be aware that there is no air conditioning except for ceiling fans. But the food is still good and people keep going as it's one of Pasadena's favorites.

Pros: Unique Food, Service

Be prepared to wait, not only for parking but for getting a seat.

The food was just generic. OK...but not great. The place is SMALL and comfy, so don't be spilling out your guts about your personal life to your friends because I could hear EVERYTHING about this one woman's life who sat near me.

People who arrived after us got served first. Our order was messed up. I had to ask to get a refill of iced tea (and it was blazing outside...)

High priced for the amount and quality of the food. $11 for a salad....? $8 for a basic egg salad sandwich?

You have to try this place at least once.

If time is on your side, the lunch at Marston's is great. Huge yummy salads, and a nice waitstaff......... a great "girls lunch" place.

I was forced one morning to eat breakfast here. I decided to see if the food here really is as good as this site says. It was the worst served food ever. the waitress was so rude and unacommadating. all i can say is on Lake ave. KATHLEEN'S is the best for breakfast lunch or dinner. Highly recommended

This is a small and cozy place to get a great breakfast. Very high class people from Pasadena love this place. Come early because there is usually a line.

I've been only a few times, mostly because I cherish sleeping in on Saturdays. And to go to Marston's means loosing sleep. You have to get there so early, if not you'll be waiting a while before you get seated. The food is good, large portions, sometimes too large. I wouldn't say it's the best in LA but it is pretty good. The crowd is the typical Pasadena crowd, a blend of the wealthy, and the not so wealthy. Either way I'd say try it at least once.

this place has the food. I don't come here often because the wait is so long and they don't take reservations. But the few times I've been here I have enjoyed everything I ordered.

The breakfast is wonderful and lunch is good too. If you could reserve a table I would be here every week.

This place is always packed everytime I drive by. I had the meatloaf sandwhich and my friend had the White Chilli both exceptional. Stop by and enjoy as the others do. Parking a little tough though since the place is always packed.

On the whole, I can't give it the nod for best breakfast in Pasadena. Great french toast, great pancakes, but overly-greasy omlettes and the bowl of oatmeal take it down a notch. The wait on a Saturday morning can be brutal.
