not perfect, but not bad giving the current difficulties of the independent book business. the store is still alive--since 1968 in the same wla location--which says a lot. the prices have remained very reasonable over the years and served mr. de chene's original intention: to make a wide variety of general used books affordably available to our community.

This was my fourth (and final) visit to this bookstore to trade in some used books. I save up a whole box every few months and go in for trade only (no cash -- I like to support used bookstores). Today the woman went out back to look through my box of books, mostly trade paperbacks, thrillers, JOHN ADAMS, stuff like that. After a few minutes, she told me that she was only interested in four books and would give me $6 cash or $9 trade for them. In the past, she has always taken almost the whole box and I would throw in the extras for nothing ('cause I'm a nice guy), so needless to say, I was a little surprised. "That's it?" I said. "That's all you want?" She replies, "Welcome to the book business." That's a quote. So, I told my wife, who was perusing the cookbooks, ??We have a $9 credit, see if there's anything." After about sixty seconds, the woman behind the counter says,? I changed my mind." I ask her, "What do you mean, you changed your mind?" And she actually said, "It's a woman's prerogative to change her mind." So, I took my books and my wife and I left the store... we will NEVER go back there again. Which is a shame, because I was a repeat customer and I love used bookstores. I owned my own business for almost 20 years, and I can tell you that this woman's people skills were severely lacking. Oh well, I'll take my business somewhere else.

Very small and cramped bookstore with a very great atmosphere. Books are piled up everywhere and they have a small, but complete collection with every subject matter you are interested in. I picked up a couple of old comics by Matt Groening that I used to read when I was a kid. Good prices, with on going specials. I always try to stop by if I'm in the area.

One of the things that I'm constantly bemoaning about Los Angeles is the dearth of used and/or independent bookstores. Fortunately for me, Gene de Chene is right on Santa Monica Boulevard. This is indeed a typical used bookstore--small and crowded, with an idiosyncratic selection (I haven't yet found a real pattern that holds) and a knowledgable and passionate proprietor. If you're like me (and I'm starting to fear that few Angelenos are like me), you'll enjoy just browsing through the place and getting to know the owner through his stock. Among other bizarre finds, I actually came across a novelization of Claire of the Moon here. Why didn't I buy it? Why?

I enjoy old bookstores, particularly the way old books smell. This one is a small shop on the westside, but has a few unexpected surprises. I was able to find some pretty interesting books here on different occassions. Also, the owner is extremely helpful and well-versed in what his store holds.
