Hungarian Goulash, a side of potato pancakes and dark German beer: doesn't get better than this late night dining.

I have visited Germany twice in the past year and loved it, I would live there, but besides the point, I thought I'd bring my husband to this place for his birthday. It was amazingly fun with the polka band, large portions of beer and food, and the ""schtick"" is that the server is abrupt like. This is all show, the waitstaff is actually really nice and accomodating, you just better know what you want when they come around to take your order. My husband loved this place so much that he brings all his friends for their birthdays to Schroeders and they love it as well, das boot is amazing but you should check out their 5 liter monster stein of beer, beware of falling in! Great food, great atmosphere, it's fantastic.

Pros: All around fun place when they have their polka band
As a German who appreciates good food and nice people I would not recommend this place to anyone. Food was lousy, the service was extremely rude. No more words needed!

Cons: Food & Service
My friend and I are regulars at Schroeders on Fridays. We're usually just there for beers during our lunch breaks, so I'm not sure how the food is. The crowd is mellow & the bartender is friendly. Best time to go to Schroeders is Oktoberfest. I had an awesome time this year and the service was great. everyone had a good time.

Back in May, my Dad came out for a visit, and we dined at Schroeder's after shopping at Embarcadero. I had the Hungarian Goulash with Spatzle, he had the German Meatloaf. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and the space is beautiful. Murals adorn the walls, the bar and sideboards are a beautiful wood and brass, and the restaurant is lit with glowing antique German light fixtures. The place reminded us both of the types of restaurants my grandfather and great grandfather took us to in Chicago. A must try!

Pros: Great beer, beautiful space, locally owned.
Cons: Parking can be difficult
I love the big burly gentleman host with the ready smile and kindly ways. I'm just a fool for a handlebar moustache! I've lived in the City for 12 years and somehow had missed this place--I feel like Indiana Jones discovering a lost treasure! During a recent visit my friend ordered Kassler Rippchen and I'm not ashamed to say I couldn't keep my fork off of his plate! If you like to eat and you like to make merry, this is a terrific place to enjoy hearty fare and learn how to polka.

Pros: Delightful waitstaff, tasty morsels, music, and polka dancing!
Cons: Some biddy's skirt brushing your schnitzel as she whizzes by in a polka frenzy.
We came to invite my parents in law from Europe because they love german food. The owner asked us where we are from to determine our tourist status. After we paid the waitress came back complaining that we didn't give her enough tip, showing us bills from other guests and even bringing a calculator. Although I'm german, but living in the States, I'm familiar with the tip procedure and know that this was not only completely rude but not legal either. It put me in an embarrasing situation and we left the restaurant with an awkward feeling. Other than that the food is very americanised. I won't recommand the restaurant to my friends.

I went to Schroeder's on a Friday night at about 7pm and I could barely squeeze in. There must have been over 200 people dancing to a band that featured a great female accordion player. Everyone seemed to be having a great time and the people that were having dinner were chowing down with gusto. Yes, it's not Chez Panisse but DUH! I love the Goulash.
And on some occasions they feature Pinkelwurst!

Schroeders is my new favorite bar of the week. Its an old german beer hall that was built in 1897. They serve huge steins that hold a liter of beer, they have a good selection of traditional german beers on tap and often feature live polka bands. I went there last night as a matter of fact and I had a fantastic time! Go there! Its awesome!

I made the mistake of ordering the ""hot vegetarian platter"" here and it was an insulting mess. The place is enormous and fun, and the waitstaff friendly. I think meat is thing here, not vegetables.

This is the place for German food. My daughter lives in Germany and on her last visit home she brought her German/Russian boyfriend. He was impressed by the service, atomsphere, and most of all the food! I have visisted Germany and I must say Shrodeder's is as close as you can get in San Francisco to being in a German eatry. The beer is wonderful, too.

Pros: Great Food, Parking is close, Atomsphere
This is a great after- work bar. Schroeder's Cafe is full of friendly staff, a big screen with games on, and has the tradition of the Financial District dialed.

What can I say? I simply love this place! I come on Friday nights and eat fabulous German food. Drink great fresh German beer and dance to polka bands. I especially love the Bavarian folk dancers. There is a sign posted at the entrance that a 7.00 cover charge will be added to my dinner bill. Where else can I find so much entertainment for such a low price? If you want to eat great German food and kick up your heels to wonderful polka music then this is the place for you!

Pros: Polka music, Great food, Party crowd
Cons: not enough dance room, Parking
The food at Schroeder's has great taste. It is definitely old world German -- tasty, hearty, and filling. In addition, the service is perfect and the prices are good. Overall it is a fine dining experience for either lunch or dinner.

Pros: Tasty food, Good service
Cons: None I know of
...then this is the place for you. I've only eaten here once, but their sausage sampler appetizer was SO good we had to order TWO! I'd recommend having this as an entree especially if you're trying to avoid carbs (ie Atkins dieters). Love the atmosphere, reminds me of the supper clubs back in Wisconsin.

Service was fast... but that was probably because the place was virtually empty on a Saturday night. Half an hour before closing the chairs were placed upside down on the tables as we finished our dinner. When we left a few minuntes later the front door was already locked and we were escorted out through a back door. The food was too Americanized, the saurbraten tasted liked cooked beef with sauce poured over it. Of the four German restaurants we've tried in San Franicisco Schroeder's was, by far, the worst.
