Sometimes I get tired of the endless california roll/tempura roll variations and cookie cutter bento boxes with teriyaki chicken/beef. Sometimes I want the kind of Japanese food that you can only get during New Years or on trips to Japan.

I prefer the set up of this Tanto compared to the one in Sunnyvale. The parking is a bit better too. Tanto kind of reminds me of an izakaya kind of place, with small dishes to share and a good amount of drinks (sho-chu, sake, beer). I personally was ecstatic to see that they served renkon, ochazuke, and onigiri.

Sure it's a bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and in this case, it's more authentic, better quality Japanese food.

Tanto is one of the best Japanese cuisine around the area!
The space in the restaurant, the food they provide, service and everything is just how you like it!
The food is worth is slightly expensive price, but I'm sure you'll have an awesome time if you eat at Tanto!
They have counters, tables, and Japanese style tables to sit at and you can't ask for more from Tanto!

This japanese restaurant provides special japanese dishes unlike the normal japanese restaurants out there. Most people there drink a little and enjoy their unique dishes. The protion of each dish is not that big so youmight find it hurting your wallet a bit after walking out the place. However, it's a great place to go once in a while if you want some special yummy japanese food with a few good friends. I really love their fish rice and roasted salmon rice bun!!! It's always packed at nite, so it's best to reserve! There are 2 locations at south bay.

I highly recommend the Sunnyvale Tanto restaurant on El Camino as well. Great dishes, menus that change daily, and very authentic. The place is packed with japanese nationals so you know it's good.

Pros: food, parking

This is not a typical Sushi place. The dishes are what the Japanese eat after their dinner in the late evening hours over a couple of drinks with friends. The dishes are small and as expensive as a regular entree at other types of restaurants, but good.

Cons: hot in the summer

don't expect sushi... sashimi or teriyaki... i'm sure u wanna try something different at tanto... my 1st time to tanto and i love it! i am a big fan of sushi and sashimi... but i think the hot tapas served at tanto are even better... especially in winter... the menu has so many different dishes to choose from... don't miss the roasted rice ball... beside the menu... they also have special written in japanese... ask the server for help/advise if they are not too busy or speak enough english to explain it to you...

I've tried several Japanese restaurants in the bay area and I know this is the closest it gets to a True Japanese Izakaya (tapas & drinking place). They have many small tapas, that aren't found in Americanized Japanese Restaurants, so you can try several things while sipping your sake. Each small dish was beautifully displayed. So if you're tired of california rolls and chicken teriyaki this place will introduce you to some real Japanese cuisine.

Pros: Great Food, Unique Food, Food presentation

Cons: Crowded
