I went there with family this weekend and just as I heard the clam chowder was awesome. The Guinness pints were also good. However, the fish and chips were soggy and tasteless, and I can make better tarter sauce at home than they can. Stop in for a bowl of soup and a beer. I wouldn't order anything else.

The lobster was rubbery, dry, and tasteless:
it was by far the worst lobster that either I or
my companion had ever tasted. Also, at
$26 for one 1 1/4 pound lobster, it was more
than double the price of the much better
lobster served at nearby restaurants. We also
had the grilled seafood platter, which was so
overcooked that the scallops could barely be
cut with a knife, let alone chewed. You'll get
fresher and better seafood at any truck stop.
If you went to Durgin Park in the old days, when
it was a good restaurant, don't go back -- you'll
spoil your memories like we did.

Pros: Was great twenty years ago

Cons: Inedible food at high prices

Was looking forward to this...but unfortunately was happy to leave it and go in search of other food. All food was uninspired...and regional cooking in this part of the world does not have to be this way. Perhaps they serve too much food...too many years of serving the same food...the passion for food was not on the plate. They might be fun for a quick meal downtown but not a memorable experience. They could step up the quality of the ingredients, the presentation and the staff at the prices they charge. Seek some of the smaller restaurants around town and you could have a much more rewarding night at a lower price.

For 30 years my wife and I have been lured to Boston from Connecticut by the prospect of eating at Durgin Park. We've always brought our relatives and visitors from Italy there to share the experience. On July 7, I took Roman friends who had visited Durgin Park with us 14 years ago for its oversized lobster. They remembered the experience and asked to go, this time with their 14-year-old son.
The waiter was not merely gruff, he was rude and careless. Then after a long wait, sloppy service. We asked about the oversized lobster, remembering how large it was, thinking one would do for 3 adults. Instead we settled on two $35 lobsters, at the waiter's suggestion. The lobsters were TINY, and each one had about 2 ounces of meat. What a terrible experience. I'm crossing Durgin Park off my list of favorite places to go.

My husband I have eaten here before and have always enjoyed the Yankee beef roast, lobster bisque, and clam chowder. Unfortunately,on our most recent trip the lobster bisque was not available, so he ordered the lobster roll which - for $21.50 - was terrible. The lobster had a terrible texture (previously frozen?) and the portion was very skimpy. The roll it was served on was not toasted. We would definitely not recommend ordering this item.

The Yankee beef roast, however, was good and saved the meal from being a total disaster. If I had to eat here again, this is the one item I would order.

I am a born and raised Bostonian. I have not been to Fanuel Hall in a long time, I was not too impressed. We went to Durgin Park for seafood, the lobster roll was skimpy and the bread was steal. We also had fried oysters that the waitress said they would be small in size but they where huge and mushy. This is not the place to go for good seafood. Legal Seafood beats this place by a mile.

After all these years, Durgin Park remains a very good restaurant. It is historic. The atmosphere is casual inside. The fish is extremely fresh and always good. Good corn bread also.

Durgin Park has been around for probably close to 100 years. An aunt who would be over 100 right now, was a waitress there as a teen, and her picture is in the lobby. Anyway, part of the charm used to be that they treated you rudely! One of my more recent visits, the host yelled at people that tried to come up the steps to be seated when it wasn't their turn. But, that was it. The waitress was very nice, and said that they don't really do that anymore. The food is New England Fare. The Yankee Pot Roast is great. All fish is fresh and hot. Good corn bread and baked beans. The seating is interesting and you very well could be seated with a group that you don't know. But that is fun too.

Durgin Park is a great place to go to see old time Boston. Food is served family style at long tables on the second floor of this really old restaurant. It's all New England style and it's fun. If you have never been there, you should give it a try.

The food is definitely for those looking for traditional, old style recipes. You won't get any chain restaurant, nationally taste tested stuff here. The Baked Beans are from old mollasses based recipes, as are Indian pudding and Brown Bread. Entrees are man sized and served with less emphasis on asthetics than quality and quantity. Old market style service on long tables you may end up sharing with one or two other parties at rush hours. New England style grey corned beef is great.

Pros: Great place for a restaurant, lots of good food, real old Boston recipes

Cons: Parking $$, stairs if you have grandma

We chose Durgin Park after its amazing rating on Taste of America and we've heard plenty about it having "the best beans in Boston". After being hastily seated and recieving poor service (no silverware, no drinks, and bread served when whe got our check!), we were eagerly looking forward to the one redeeming factor of the restaurant: the beans. They came in a child sized dish and were crusty and gritty in the mouth, and we could hardly choke down more than one or two bites. Don't fall for the scam, head away from Quincy Market and the tourist traps for some real Boston food. And for the love of god, don't order the beans!

Cons: doesn't live up to the hype

My boyfriend and I stumbled across this restaurant and after looking at the ecclectic New England-y menu we decided to try it. We both got the corned beef and cabbage and were extremely disappointed. The corned beef was dry, brown (not the usual red), and lacked any kind of flavor. Somehow they managed to mess up the cabbage, which also lacked flavor. I had gotten baked beans as an appetizer which were decent, and my boyfriend got the clam chowder which he said was okay. Maybe this is just the way they make corned beef in Boston, but I was not at all impressed, especially after I returned home to hear everyone raving about the restaurant. Again, maybe their specialties are better, but I don't think I will be returning to find out.

I had lunch at Durgin Park (on a Saturday) for the first time in about 10 years or more. My daughter and I had Yankee --- roast and I wasn't disappointed. It was delicious and the service was fast and friendly. There was ice water and corn bread on the table a minute after we were seated and the food came fast too. I can't wait to go back.

I think it is the worst place in Boston. From food to service, nothing is good. after ordering our food, waiter makes a remark ,"Are you guys serious; that's it." THis remark was not at all in a funny or joking way. But we still thought that food should be good and it was the same like the service. My chicken was cold and beer was warm, almost came after 25 min. on a monday night (slowest day of the week).

Durgin Park more than lives up to it's reputation. It's a fun place to go, to mingle with folks from all over, while you enjoy generous portions of the highest quality New England foods. A trip to Boston is not a trip to Boston unless you have at least one meal at this wonderful restaurant.

My wife and I had lunch recently during our trip to Boston. This was a highly recommend restaurant from a number of national sources, however we do not understand why!
We did like to atmosphere but after that we were highly disappointed. The server was just OK, the food was poor, the portion sizes were small, and the prices were high.
I had the baked scrod, a specialty of theirs, and it was below average. The baked beans were flavorless and undercooked.
My wife had the chicken potpie, which came with canned gravy and canned corn. Really not what we expected.

I had their "famous" prime rib -- which must be know for its lack of flavor. I left 75% of it on the plate. My wife had fish and chips, which was "blah" -- completely without flavor. The baked beans were bland at best.

My mom had shrip -- which was mediocre, but at least wasn't horrible like my prime rib. And my daughter had spaghetti, which tasted like little more that tomato sauce.

This place was bland at its best, and downright horrible at its worst. And given the cost, you'd be better off eating at one of the vendors at Quincy Market. The meal was so bad, and we ate so little, that we grabbed some dessert in Quincy Market because we were still hungry.

Seriously, we had them wrap up our generous leftovers (mostly because it was so horrible) and we gave it to a homeless person.

As a frequent visitor to Boston we try to make all the "places to go" and for the most part they have lived up to their billing. Not so Durgin Park. My wife and myself both ordered the pot pie, hard to screw up a pot pie right?, mostly because we love a good pot pie mostly because we don't eat red meat and that kinda blew out the Durgin's so called famous pot roast. If I had not actually seen the pot pie in my plate I would not have known what I was eating because there was no taste what's so ever, none, zip, zero, nada. Because we were hungry we didn't even finish, just paid and left so we could find somewhere else to eat. Quick seating, go mid afternoon, on one there, maybe because the food sucks?

Durgin Park is much more than just a reasturaunt. They have a lot to offer they have a wide selection on there menu for people who like a lot of different kinds of foods. Also there prices are very good for how much food you get. They also cary alot of meals that are known around Boston for all the people that love that type of food. They have been around for a loooong time and I think that says a lot about a business that if they have been around for a long time they must be doing something right. They also have live music in the tavern area three times a week. You can have functions and parties there as well where the staff will work with you to find the food and prices that are right for you. I would reccomend Durgin Park they are a well known place that has been around for a while and good food.

Durgin Park is a great restaurant! They have the biggest prime rib I have ever seen. The prices are higher, but it makes up for it in the quality of the food. The restaurant is clean, waitstaff are very friendly. The is usually about a 20 minute or so wait on the weekends. But definately well worth it!!

We heard so much about Durgin Park we just had to go. I had the best Yankee Pot Roast(excluding my own,of course) I ever had. A true Patriots meal! We didn't wait long at all to be seated and the staff was very nice. The ambience was simple and clean. We were waited on right away with a cube of their famous cornbread in hand. Our food came quick and hot. The pot roast was tender and the baked beans were the best of Boston. I had Indian Pudding for the first time, yummy. Like I said Great New England food! Our waitress was so nice we gave her a big tip, well deserved, especially after watching her work so hard to make sure we were comfortable. We are definitley going back and we will recommend anyone to go there. They won't regret it!

I havent eaten fish in something like ten years, mostly because fresh fish in Chicago is hard to come by at a decent price. I stopped at Durgin Park with my wife and two year old and it was very comfortable. I didnt order fish since Im not used to doing so, but I did try my wifes haddock which was really good and I would probably order it if Im ever in Boston again. I dont know if this is a tourist trap or not since I was a tourist in Boston, I just know I was satisfied with everything.

Upon arriving in Boston, my girlfriend and I decided to head for Fanieul Hall for lunch and sightseeing. We asked a Bostonian for a recommendation and was told that Durgin Park was very popular with most visitors. We headed over famished and weary and were not disappointed. We were promptly seated, waited upon by a very nice college student, and enjoyed a great meal. Coming from NYC, the prices were very reasonable. Try the fish chowder and roast beef.

I used to work at Durgin Park... and let me tell you, WHAT A CHORE! Waitressing at it's finest! Up and down flights of stairs, making sure your witty repartie wasn't too witty or crass... but most of all, making sure your guests are getting the food they heard all about from every one they have ever known who has been to Boston. I can honestly tell you that the food at Durgin is made fresh! Management may act kindly to their staff, but they KNOW what needs to be on their tables. If it isn't above par, they refuse to let you serve it. The staff will go out of their way to make you laugh, and what kid wouldn't like a rude waiter to make fun of mom and dad with? It's tradition, not bad service.
