Famous in NYC for book lovers all over the world. I always hit this store when I'm in NYC which is luckily not very often. I can't stand the crowds and the noise of the city. Just head over to The Strand if you're in the area and get lost

Hipster central. Good finds but getting way too tacky for my taste, selection is always a toss-up. Funky book store in NYU area.

The Strand Bookstore has been around for decades, primarily selling (and buying- at a super low price, so don??t expect to make more than pocket change selling your old books there, unless they are art/coffee table books and even then) used books, but also new, rare and out-of-print books. It??s pretty big and well-organized for a used bookstore, with lofty, wide aisles full of everything from cookbooks to art books to science books to classics? the staff tends to have an attitude, but what do you expect from people who are that cool and that brilliant (just kidding). Outside, they have bookshelves stuffed with paperbacks selling for as little as 40 cents? usually outdated fiction and autobiographies no one cares about anymore.

The Strand tends to elicit die-hard devotee behavior from the downtown literati, and on any given day is full of hipsters mingling in hushed and serious silence. They have all kinds of free readings, children??s and family hours, classes and events there, easy to find out about via their website and listserv, and you can even watch videos of the events on youtube.

The Strand has always advertised itself as having 18 miles (2.5 million) of books? what??s fun about it is that it??s organized enough to be able to go in and find what you want, but used bookstorey/flea markety enough to be like a treasure hunt, as you never know what you??re going to find.

I love books, love to read and Strands is a Bookstore with a wide range of selections. You don't have to be a book worm to like this store. They sell it all. Books for Everyone, no matter your interest. They have the popular books. They have the books that no-one else carries. The hard to find books, new or used. For the most part, the used books they sell are in great reading condition. They have $1 racks, if you happen to have a thesis to write on something old, you can get ideas and information from these books without spending much money on something you will only use that one time. I love coming here and spending time browsing. They have a good collection of educational books for teachers, parents and children. If I ever decide to home school my child I know I can count on Strands for the academic material that I will need. I picked up a large US map, about 42"x50" that has an adhesive to stick on the wall. It allows my little one to fill in with an erasable marker the name of the states, its capital and each states abbreviation. It is also easy to peel off. I saw other educational stick on that are priced right and I plan on returning to purchase. Strands always have competitive prices to other major bookstores. It truly is a place to get lost in and fall in Love...

Bored with the same old selection you see on the tables in Barnes & Nobles? Don??t get me wrong I love my Barnes & Nobles but this place is exceptional. You??ll find a completely different selection here. Or you??ll find what you??re looking for but half of what you would pay elsewhere. There is a reason why this store is filled with people and books on a Friday night. It has an extremely unique arrangement of books. They have everything from new releases to the out of print materials. If you haven??t gone here yet you are completely missing out!

Miles of books cramped on shelves shouldn??t intimidate you. There are three floors with tons of titles, genres, and categories. A personal favorite is the children??s section where you??ll find classics and out of prints. They have a large selection of books about New York City just for kids. Whether you??re a teacher, parent, or someone who just cares about children??s lit, it is quite an amazing assortment. In addition, they even hold events here and filled up a calendar with them.

Even if you aren??t in the NYC area, you can go online and purchase books too. If you are in this area you should check it out. Try selling your books back, buying a book for a buck, or see an event there. While this may not be your typical bookstore, it is definitely grand. I think everyone should try out Strand!

They have a huge store, but the staff that work here need to learn about this thing called customer service! I might have got the same girl as the review under me, because I wanted help searching for a certain book and this lady was unconcerned about my problem. I like the amount of books they have but if you come, it's better to search for yourself and not be disappointed by the lack of service here.

Such a huge book store with thousands upon thousands of books and yet they did not carry the VERY popular National Bestselling Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire (True Blood) novels.

I searched the store up and down several times thinking I must have made a mistake but I hadn't.

I asked the girl at the information desk where the TRUE BLOOD books were and she looked at me very harshly (judging me for reading trashy mystery novels?). She said they didn't carry those books but said they had a one copy of a boxed set with 7 of the 10 books. She looked sooo annoyed when I said I only wanted one book. I had already read 6 of those 7 books... why would I spend 50 dollars on that box set?

How can the biggest book store in the biggest city in the USA not carry a series of books that popular? I stopped at a tiny little book shop in the Port Authority Bus Terminal and THEY carried all the Sookie books. I have never felt judged for reading a book before and the STRAND really judged me hard core by deciding not to carry that book. But oh they'll carry the boring book TWILIGHT. very upset. VERY!

Like several other reviewers here, I joined Citysearch specifically to bash The Strand. The place is a total triumph of advertising over product. Anyone in a dumb Strand T-shirt (or hoodie, or hat, or shorts) will tell you that this is a great independent book store, but the fact of the matter is that it's got a very unimpressive selection that's presided over by some of the rudest people I've ever encountered in retail. I guarantee that whatever you can find at The Strand you can find cheaper on the Amazon Marketplace, shipping included.

The people who work at The Strand comport themselves as if they were the high priests of a sacred temple, but the truth of the matter is that they're in customer service. And if they can't provide pleasant service and a good, low-priced selection of books, what's the point?

Pros: lots and lots of used hardcovers of major novels by major authors

Cons: overpriced, terrible customer service, dank and inaccessible bookshelves, you name it

I've always bought my books at Strands, just because they are dollars cheaper than other bookstores I've encountered in New York. Unlike the others, I have yet to encounter the rudeness of their employees, probably because I have never bothered to sell my used books here, and after reading the numerous review, have no intention to. The only thing that bothers me about this bookstore is how unorganized it is : dusty books are stacked on top of each other, some books are not in alphabetical order/not in their best condition, and it's hard to navigate through the store, it's like a puzzle within itself (you go left, and then right, and then left again, and it would take you an hour to go back to the entrance. I'm exaggerating, but you get my point).
For me, their prices kind of make up for everything, even though I personally wouldn't spend more than 30 minutes there!

Strand books has a great website -- www.StrandBooks (plus a dot com).

If you know what book you want, check its availability online before you go to the store -- you'll find the store that has it and the section in which it is shelved (or save yourself a trip!). The author search also works well.

I print out the information and take it with me. Oddly, I have found the staff is incredibly helpful if you have the basic info -- and WILL help you find the object of your desire if it is not shelved where it is supposed to be.

We ordered a new book from Strand through Amazon and found it to have red ink on the bottom and to be in generally dingy condition.

I lived within easy walking distance of the East Village location for a few years and never needed an excuse to go there. However, I've always found the employees at that store to be very unpleasant. In recent years I've been patronizing the Fulton Street location and I like it MUCH better. For one thing, there's plenty of space to maneuver and it's hardly ever crowded. And although I wouldn't accuse the staff of being effusively friendly, they're a lot more pleasant than at the main location. The selection at Fulton Street is very good, too.

I completely concur with the other reviewers here about the RUDENESS and ATTITUDE of the staff at the Strand. Ask them a simple, polite question about their store and they bite your head off. The Strand in the 1990s was a necessary evil for me before the internet. In 2007 it has lost almost all of its appeal, and is simply not a very fun place to hang out and sift through dusty, mediocre books. The worst part is their book buying policy -- incredibly low offers. Five excellent books will but one of their old tomes. The only reason I don't give it one star is that a store with this many books is bound to have something of interest. It's not the books' fault!

Um, how could you hate the strand? It's huge and has a great selection of used and hard-to-find books at great prices. The staff actually knows something about literature, unlike the employees of many huge chain bookstores. There's a reason it's constantly packed with people.

DID I MENTION THEY ARE RUDE!????? i have lived across the street from strand my whole life but i actually just registered with citysearch JUST to write this review!)

like many of the previous posters i went to sell some used books, as it clearly states all over their signage that they buy them. just as i walked up, the man behind the counter (richard i think his name was) acted like i offended him by bringing these books there, he glared at me and snapped that they dont buy text books (which they used to) and they dont buy paperbacks. i told him to just look through the 3 bags i had to see if there was anything he would take, since i wasnt sure anymore what he was looking for. he outright refused to look, so i pulled a few out that i thought maybe he would look at.....saying that whatever else he didnt want, i would just donate. that apparently outraged him more because he rudely informed me that the salvation army on the next block was the "appropriate" place to try to donate my things if thats what i was trying to do!!! i certainly didnt expect to make more than a few bucks on my books, which were used but in great condition, and i probably would have turned around and spent it in the store purchasing some new books....but after this disgruntled loser of a man waved his hand at me saying "NO!!" there wasnt anything useful in my bag, i am glad because i dont want to contribute a cent to these people. the worst part is that EVEN THOUGH THIS MAN REFUSED TO LOOK AT OR BUY ANY OF THE BOOKS I BROUGHT, WHEN I TURNED AROUND ANOTHER EMPLOYEE HAD ALREADY TAKEN ALL 3 BAGS OF BOOKS AWAY ANY WAS PUTTING THEM IN A BIN TO SELL THEM!!!!!!!!! they were so heavy, i didnt even bother to ask for them back, but i was angry with myself on the way home thinking about them making money on those books after giving me nothing but a DISGUSTING attitude. i certainly would have settled for a smile! STAY AWAY FROM STRAND!!!!!!

I am surprised no one has reviewed Strand yet. After my inital visit I thought, why did I even shop at B&N all these years? They have real books, shelves and shelves of them, and you don't have to walk to 4th floor just to find actual literature. They sell some new books as well as used ones, at a fraction of the listed price. The $1 carts outside are cool too, cheaper than buying a magazine for a long train ride. The scene can be hectic during crowded times, but the selection makes up for that.

It?s places like this who whine when chains take away their business. I?m all in favor of supporting local businesses but if the staff is going to insist on treating the clientele poorly, I?d be glad to see them go out of business- can?t just coast on ?we?re independently owned and we're cheap" as justification of their existence when they treat people badly.
I go in on Sunday April 22 and I?m "greeted? by a security guard who tells me ?check your bag?. Fine. Just let me get the books out first. As I?m doing this, he keeps jerking his head towards the bag check counter even after I politely tell him yes, i will, I?m getting my books out. Now if I?m taking books out of my bag the second I walk in, what do you think I?m doing with them? But he waits until I check the bag, bring my books to the sale counter, then tells me they don?t take sales on Sunday. I asked him why he watched me do this without saying anything- he just ignored me. Textbook ?now I see you, now I don?t? behavior regularly practiced by nasty bouncers, but a bookstore? . What kind of business encourages this behavior?
I go in April 23 and sell my books (rate was about 12% of original price). A employee is curt with a guy behind me when he asks if he can put his heavy box of book on the counter. I see already yesterday wasn't an isolated incident, but the way of things at the Strand.
Then the guy behind the counter thinks it?s appropriate to remark on how I shouldn?t smoke cause it?s bad for me (thanks, had no idea) when I take out my lighter. I?m sure he was trying to be funny, but after observing his sizeable belly and wondering if I should advise him to exercise more and eat less pizza because it?s bad for him, I somehow doubted he?d find the humor.
There?s an ?if you don?t like it, go somewhere else? attitude here. Don?t worry. I will. Rather spend an extra $5-$10 on a book and not deal with a miserable staff. I hope the rest of the customers who get treated like garbage here follow suit.

I'd experienced the rudeness of the staff at the Strand in the past - and today's experience inspired me to write a review. I had gone over to the Strand to sell a few books (with the intention of later browsing the aisles, and maybe picking up something new.) The man who came over barely glanced at the books (without looking at me at all), announced "we don't buy books unless they're in good shape" and walked away without further word. In the stack of books I'd brought were novels purchased *less than a week ago* from Amazon. And I sure hadn't dragged them through the mud since. (Just found they weren't my style.) And alot shabbier books were on sale all around. Given markups, my concern was not really that I was denied much of a sale...it's the ATTITUDE at the Strand that is just unpleasant. Thanks, whoever you are. I'm never coming to the Strand again.

Pros: None. It just has the rep.

Cons: Rude service, disorganized cataloguing

One of the best used bookstores around in my opinion. I especially love all the renovations they have done to the store. No more climbing the stairs. I can now take the elevator. The dollar rack is always fun to look through. They have an amazing selection of children's books that are so cheap. They make wonderful presents for my grandchildren. A little disorganized but I've seen worse.

Strand Book Store is filled with a great variety of different books at pretty cheap prices, you can get a great bargin on some old books. I can spend hours there just browsing through their selection, the staff wasnt very helpful when I approached them and came off obnoxious, but aside from that, its a wonderful book store.

If there is a hard to find and out of print book on your wishlist, chances are that you will find it here. If you have no particular book in mind, then after browsing here for a while you're sure to have a big long list of books you want to buy. They have a great selection of used and hard to find books. Prices can be reasonable, depending on how badly you want the book.

One cannot go throughout life without frequenting this book shop. With its literally eight miles of books, it's impossible to leave without buying anything. Although its size can be overwhelming, the best bet is to focus on the bargain tables that are laid out throughout the store, listed by subject. The prices are unbeatable and so is the selection. The main drawback is that there is no air conditioning, so if you're visiting in the summer, watch out!

Right by Union Square, this legendary book store is very famous for it's collection of rare, used and out of print books. There's definitely a book you've been wanting in their "18 miles of books." It can get a bit crowded and the staff in my experience has not been very helpful, but if you find what you're looking for then it's well worth it.

Strand book store is truly a wonderful place to shop for books - you really never know what you are going to find there from amazing editions of books to just the people you are going to see. Strand is an ideal place to find used books at great prices - the selection is really excellent. Strand is really one reason that village is excellent - go there and then to a coffee shop and your day is just made. Overall, I would recommend Strand to anyone because it really is a New York landmark to visit.

I love coming to Strand to browse, more than anything. I never know what I am going to walk out of the store with when I leave. It's really a fun way to pass the time. If you are the type who knows what you want you may find it easier to just go to their website and order your specific books and pay on line and then just go to the store to pick them up.

it's the way you've always imagined book stores when you were a child - supertall stacks of new and old books, with ladders to reach them; bemused patrons and hippy-ish salespeople navigating the tiny spaces between stacks; every corner jampacked with books begging to be read. this is the kind of place you can spend hours browsing and despite the fact that they have used - and thus cheap - books, end up spending all your disposable income.

PROS: the selection is almost limitless
CONS: not enough hours in the day to spend here

The Strand Book Store is a New York legend. You've surely seen people on the subway sporting the Strand totebags. They've been shopping at the largest supplier of used and new books in the city. It's a store of aisles and aisles of books, ranging from middle aged books to contemporary best sellers. The staff are very helpful and can search the shelves with you in pursuit of whatever you seek. They don't have everything though, so amazon might still be a better bet.

I could truly spend hours just perusing the books at the Strand. Now that they have completed the renovation it doesn't have that completely musty old book feel like it used to - which is both good and bad. Be careful of the discount paperbacks in the front - they are discounted for a reason.

They really do have a lot of books. They have a great selection, including college texts books and even magazines. They have a special order desk so they can even put in that hard to find textbook as well. They have a so-so friendly help staff, but they are usually too busy to help. Inside, it's cramped and always stocked full of books. They also have a bargain book sale outside.

This huge Manhattan book store sits just south of Union Square and offers a little bit of everything, with thousands of books in every subject imaginable. The fiction section alone spans two floors, with popular releases, classics, and review copies in the vast basement. The newly renovated arts section offers first-rate tomes on photography, design and more. And best of all, the prices are much lower than any chain bookstore.

PROS: Great selection, low prices
CONS: Staff not always the most helpful

The Strand Book Store is famous for there enormous inventory of new and used books. They claim something like 18 miles of shelves of books and I wouldn't doubt that that is true. It is a bit messy and the staff is not all that helpful so wear comfortable shoes as you maybe doing a lot of walking, bending and possibly climbing ladders. You can't deny the inventory being world class and the prices are pretty good with some amazing bargains. If you have any interests in books eventually you have to come to the Strand to take a look.

Strant Book Store is probably one of the largest non-chain bookstores in the world. They have a gigantic selection of used, rare, out of print, hard to find and other weird books. But their huge selection has a downside.

It's pretty impossible to find out if they have a particular book. If you call them and ask them to look something up, they tell you that they will look for it and get back to you if they find it. So you end up waiting for hours for them to call you back, and can never be sure if they're still looking for it or if they don't have it and won't be calling you back at all. On top of that, they only search for hardcover books, so if you are looking for a paperback, or if they only have the book you're looking for in paperback, they won't tell you whether they have it or not.

If you're in the store, you'll have a much better luck finding the book. Things are split into sections that are pretty specific, and everything within sections is alphabetized by author. Which means you better know the author's name, or you won't find your book!

So basically, they really make you work for the book. But if you ARE lucky enough to find it there, chances are you'll be very happy with the price.

PROS: Huge selection, great prices
CONS: Hard to look up availability

The Strand is certainly a new york landmark, although I would almost recommend one of the smaller bookstores in the village before this one. The deals on the books outside can't be beat, and the variety of books is always changing.

Inside, the crowds and heat can either add to the mood or be an irritant, depending on the mood. If you are a true book lover, it is certainly worth it--being among the "8 miles of books" will feel like coming home. If you give the store a good amount of time, it can be a great way to spend an afternoon.

If you are just looking for one particular book in a rush, it can be overwhelming and while the staff has never been rude to me, it is simply so crowded that it takes forever to get help.

A gem is the collection of even more rare books, mainly antique books, first editions in the office next door. Up a couple flights in an elevator & it's a completely different experience--no crowds, just book treasures. The bargains may not be as great here, but if you've been looking for a book or edition for years, it's worth it.

The Strand is a NYC landmark, but not neccessarily a good one! The staff is rude and the store is over 8 miles of books, so if you need help good luck to you! The one thing I will say about the Strand that is good is that they have a lot of hard to find and out of print books. If you call in advance to look for a book or collection (I recommend this) they can track it down for you and possibly hold it at the front of the store. If you are planning on checking out the Strand in person (everyone should at least once due to the overwhelming size and the constructive chaos) plan on spending a full afternoon in there.

PROS: Has hard to find, out of print books

The Strand is the place New Yorkers go to find used and out of print books. The selection is stagggering and they are easily the largest store of its kind in New York. Wander the aisles or find a section with books you are interested in and dig in. Outside there are usually racks filled with $1 books and you sometimes find a gem there before you even enter the shop.
