I usually don't write reviews but after such a great experience here, it was absolutely necessary for me to take the time out to praise this place. \r
\r
With all the salons in NY, you think it would be easy to find a place to love and feel comfortable in but it wasn't until I found the Robert Stuart Salon that I could truly say that I found the perfect place. \r
\r
I've been to my share of hair salons and not once did I ever get highlights that looked so natural and beautiful. \r
\r
I got a haircut from Robert Stuart himself and all I can say is WOW! No wonder this man has been in business for so long... We discussed what I was looking for before I got my hair washed and then again once my hair was washed and I was in his chair. He not only gave me exactly what I wanted, he taught me different ways to style it to change it up.\r
\r
I will be back many more times, for I have finally found my place here in NY! Thank you thank you thank you Robert Stuart and staff!\r

I found this salon on citysearch and decided to give it a try and I'm so happy I did!! The people who worked there were so nice and friendly it was a pleasure to do business with them! The stylist was amazing, and knew exactly what hair style would be perfect for me. I wont get my hair cut anywhere else!

What can I say about this charming hair salon. It's all good. The staff is friendly and they know how to make you feel like a princess. This salon is truly a diamond in the rough. I look forward to my visit to New York every year so I can get my hair cut from Robert himself. He is a great hair stylist and also very charming. I guess that's why he's so successful with his business. I can't wait to go back to New York for my haircut. Thank you Robert for always making me look and feel like a movie star every single time I get my haircut with you.

I came here cause a friend recommended it.

I think they all charge way too much. I went to jenny. I told her what I wanted and she suggested otherwise. Can you ever find someone that listens to how you want your hair? And someone that won't take so much length away when they give you a trim? She was a bit snap happy with the scissors. I wasn't happy afterwards. I told her not to cut a lot cause I had a photo shoot coming up. I then had to push my photo shoot for a month later cause she chopped too much length.

Where can I find a stylist that understands subtlety and listening to what the client wants?

I rarely entrust my locks to just anyone, so when I moved to NYC I was devastated to leave my old stylist and find a new one. A friend of mine uses Robert and recommended him to me so I thought I would give him a try and after the first cut I was smitten. He was great- he sat me down in the chair and immediately asked what my vision was and talked me through the cut to make sure I was comfortable with the length and style (I was getting bangs for the first time so I was incredibly nervous). After having an experience with such an attentive and skilled stylist I don't think I could ever go to anyone else.

I happened upon this salon one morning while going out to eat. After looking in from the outside I told myself I had to try it out. I ventured about a week later to get a consultation for my hair coloring, and it was very nice to have someone listen to what I wanted to do with my hair, and not have the usual stylist telling me what I should do with it. I scheduled my appointment, and a few days later got my hair cut and colored with high lights. I especially love the hair cut I received. The color and highlights came out even better than expected, and it so far has passed my remaining test of actually looking how I wanted it to, several days after. I will be going back.

I am one of the owners of the Robert Stuart Salon. We work very, very hard to make a simple living, to do good work and to make clients happy. Sometimes we don't and it is our aim to be at least given a chance to ""fix"" the problem. But we do not deserve invented reviews that are so malicious and destructive. Freedom is not only a right, it is also a responsibility.

It's unlike me to write a review about a buisness, but do to
a horrible experienced I had there,I felt that I needed to
express my feelings.Jenny was my stylist.Don't get me wrong she was nice, but the hair cut she gave me doesn't fit my life style in anyway. She gave me a funky messy hair cut that I could not style on my own.I had to go to Jeffrey stein to have it fix,it's much better, but I have to wait
a couple of months to grow.I felt like she did not understand a word I said or she just wanted to do what she wanted.Anyway I will not be returning to the Robert Stuart salon again.

Do to a very busy schedule I have, last week was the last hair cut appointment,I will make my assistant book for me.What has happened to the salons in manhattan???It all is forgotten when making costumers happy with their service, and making a client feel welcomed was important to a business. This place looked liked they are starving for money,I over heard the owner apologizing numerous times to two different clients how late he was running,it seems like this man is so hungry for money that he keeps looking at the door to see if there are more possible clients coming in.The place is to small and very crowded and very loud, specially the owner talking so much and the hair dryers. My hair cut came out one side shorter than the other as I noticed when I looked in the mirror the next day, anyway I did forget the woman's name who cut my hair, but it doesn't matter, because I will never return to this establishment....

I was looking for a new salon to bring my shoulder length, fine, curly hair, and begin coloring. I'm traditionally pretty low key about my hair.

Upon entering the salon, I was greeted immediately and offered cucumber infused water. Everyone was friendly, and polite. I met with Julie, who was to be colorist. She was pleasant, and seemed tuned in to what result I wanted. After deciding what was best, I was shampooed by a very pleasant young man, and highlighted.

Robert was my stylist, and I pretty much gave my hair over to him. I was ""ok"" with losing a few inches, as long as I could still pull it back. And I wanted something ""age appropriate (I'm 46), flattering to my features, and fun!"". He cut and blew my hair out into an angled bob. Ok for ""straight"", but would it work when curly? hmmm...

Well, the problems began when I washed my hair and found that the color was great, the cut was probably great as well.....but now my curls were very fuzzy on top and on the sides., and looked very full and mushroomed out at my ears. I had been told that there was a 2 week ""come back if you have a problem"" policy. I walked in 2 days later, and after a short discussion with a woman who basically told me to buy some products to fix it, I became visibly upset and just got my coat when a stylist named Lili pulled me aside and had a conditioning treatment applied. A woman named Julie helped with the process, and both women were very nice and seemed sincere to make things better. I was instructed to alternate between my curly hair supplies I already use, and one for color. I haven't done my hair again to see the difference, but I think I'll opt for single process color in the future to prevent changing my hair texture.

Overall, I love the vibe of this place. Pleasant, unpretentious, yet highly professional. I people-watched a lot of great cuts and colors on a variety of people, both men and women, all ages. Although my experience wasn't without some problems, the desire to make it right will keep me coming back. A rare salon gem on the upper westside.

The stylist at another salon who had been cutting my short, curly hair for many years retired. I was so afraid of what someone new would do with it that I kept putting off finding another stylist. Finally, my hair had grown completely unmanageable and I asked a friend for a recommendation, and she suggested Robert. I went in without an appointment, just to meet him. He greeted me warmly, focusing on my hair. Yes, he said as he peered at my hair, I can do something really good with this. So I made an appointment for a few days later -- and he did!
I like what he did better than I liked my old haircut!

I've been going to this salon regularly for about 5 years, and had several different stylists. All were great at first. I have medium length hair with a moderate amount of layering. It seems that once I achieve the most flattering haircut, no stylist is able to maintain it over time. They eventually end up doing something different when I don't ask them too. After about a year of consistency with Lily, I just got a really ugly bob from her that I didn't ask for. It seems like she cut the under layers shorter than the outer ones so the hair curls under at the bottom and makes me look like a cutie pie mushroom head. In addition, there aren't enough layers above that so it falls kind of flat on the top and poofy on the bottom, the most unflattering shape for my face possible.

A half dozen times, I've asked the receptionist if they could book me a ""good"" stylist for a cut or color, and I have been incredibly disappointed every time. I had an awful haircut by a woman (who has since left). In fact, the cut was so bad that even Robert acknowledged it when he tried to fix it (not successfully). Then I had highlights with some young guy who seemed like he had been hired the week before (and has also since left)--a disaster and also had to be fixed. Then another terrible color job. It seems to me that there is zero quality control at this salon, with lots of transient stylists who may or may not be any good. Probably some of them are, but you never know, and Robert doesn't seem to care much..

I wasn't going to reply, but coming from a service industry, I only

thought it fair to respond and give feedback rather then to simply not return.

Firstly, there were 2 Manhattan salons that I was considering when I moved here- yours and one other. I chose the other on impulse, which has been great to date. However, when I had to miss an appointment due to work, I came to your salon on said Sunday.

I came in and asked to have a single color process (I usually get highlights, but was going on vacation and wanted to have an all
over color).

Here's what went wrong:

> I asked for a color and was recommended another color that was similar to what was underneath my hair (previously covered by highlights as I had made a mistake some 6 months back). I said no and chose a true blond color from a chart

> I was told that I would need to sit for 20-25 minutes (fine) for the color to take. 35-40 minutes later my hair was checked

> Stylist (Deleted name as have sent email to salon with the name) asked the assistant to wash my hair, but not condition it (assistant actually, and rightly, asked if I was therefore getting another treatment) I said no as there had been no consultation
.
> A glaze was then put through my hair without me being consulted - and which I was given the privilege of having to pay
an additional $40 for without consent

> in between there were comments asking me what time it was while cutting my hair - not very reassuring

>When it was dried I was spun in the chair saying that I had to 'get the light right' to look at the color properly

> Got home and went on vacation a couple of days later to
find my hair a 'delightful' bright orange color

> After vacation (and 3 days before i went) I had to front up to work with orange hair and with no time to have it changed (plus the risk of hair damage from too many treatments in a short period)

I have been going here for 2 years now and have always had a great experience with Robert and the whole atmosphere. He discusses what you want and everything he's going to do beforehand and even options for future cuts. I always walk out loving my hair. On my budget, Robert's a splurge. But with hair and shoes, you don't mess around with bargains.

I also got an amazing cut a few weeks back by Vincent. He really listened to what I wanted (i was even somewhat vague) and gave me a cut that totally fits my personality and face. I have no idea how he does it but he's really great. Very sweet and chill. The whole salon seems very welcoming and aren't snippy or snooty like some other salons. I'm a busy student and despite not taking the best care of my hair at times, this cut has kept looking great. Definitely will go back.

I was in the city for a short time and really needed a haircut. I called Robert Stuart Salon and they fit me in with Vincent. From the second I walked in the door, I was made to feel comfortable and at home. Vincent gave me a thorough consult, and gave me such a great cut! He is innovative, concerned, VERY talented, and sweet as can be. I will certainly go back and will try to have him be my only stylist. I live in Florida, so this may be a trick, but he is wonderful. I really enjoyed my experience with him. I am a cosmetologist, and he is fabulous! I was in a bit of a hurry when I left, and didn't really get to say 'bye"" to Vincent, but I really would like him to know how much I like my cut and his methods.
It was a pleasure. The only bad thing about writing this review, is I'm afraid I won't be able to be ""fit in"" anymore! He's going to be too busy for me!
Great job, and it was a pleasure going to this Salon. EVERYONE in the salon was friendly, warm and welcoming.
Thanks again, .... I'll be back!

Anyone else think the mix of five star and one star reviews is a little odd? I don't have an explanation, but I can say the stylists here vary widely in skill level and experience. After my first stylist left I had a few disappointing cuts from people who are no longer there. I stuck with the place because of convenience and ended up with Lily and my hair has never looked better. She gives great cuts for men. I'm a guy in my twenties and like to look good without looking trendy. I have to look professional, but women have to like me too. Lily delivers.

I agree that the owner is in love with his voice and the solicitous attitude everyone puts on is blatantly fake--if you're a man, all the pseudo-empathy will make you want to punnch through a wall--but it's worth it for the cut.

I arrived at my appointment and I was greeted with wide smiles. I thought, this is going to be an excellent experience! My stylist (I don't even remember his name) was so very impersonal, however! This is a major turnoff to me. He said he was ""focused on the cut."" So I could not wait to see my new fab. cut. Well, once he blew it out and I told him it still felt heavy in places, he did not cut it any further! Now I know the difference between a $120 cut and a $55 cut. It is definitely worth your money to spend money on a GREAT cut.

Upon paying, a customer review flyer was shoved at me as soon as I handed them my cash and they sent me off with a lollipop and a paper asking me to write them a review. How about a 10% discount on my next visit to go along with that lollipop? I may of given them a second chance.... maybe.

So, here's the lollipop review.

Pros: Great blowdry

Cons: VERY Impersonal and how about a discount instead of a lollip

Lily did an awesome job on an updo for my hair. Everyone at the salon (correction - everyone who worked at the salon) was super friendly and really paid attention to their clients. Tons of people complimented me on my hairstyle after I had it done here. Would go back in a NY minute!

Pros: personal attention to each client due to small size

Cons: some clients are obnoxious

They don't just simply cut your hair. They listen to you, and combine that with their many years of experience to meet your exact needs at the highest level. And to top that, each staff member is not only professional, but extremely warm and gracious. I've tried a number of high-end salons in NYC, and Robert Stuart Salon has, by far, done the best job with my hair. It is, as always, a pleasure going there.

Was my first time at Robert stuart salon, got an appointment by the owner himself, which turned out to be the bigest mistake ever.one he was running 30min behind waiting in a salon that can barely fit 10 people had no where to sit.finnaly it was my turn, and I asked for a simple haircut.just 2inches of and very litle layers ended up with 4inches of with to many layers and short ones that u have no clue what to do with it.my head looks like a big mess.maybe if he did less weird talking and more listening then maybe he would understand what I wanted.never going back.\r

In NYC for a conference and needed a fixer upper haircut! Lily at Robert Stuart was amazing at being able to decipher exactly what my long hair needed to give it more volume and style! I was in and out of the salon in a little over an hour - great service! Thank you!

I loved Lily, who made my frizzy, curly hair straight and shiny, even on a humid NYC summer day. I also like that the salon does not feel overly stuffy - it's relaxed, calm, and friendly.

the stylists here are really really lacking. At best they are average and way overated and overpriced for what this place charges. I felt like it was her first haircut and Robert made her practice on my head.

never going back.

I tell Lilly what mood I am in and I ask her to make all the decision from there with a few guidelines. She is amazing sweet and funny. My 3 hours (I have long hair) there are worth it and the compliments just roll in. I recommend her any day.

I've been looking for a solid neighborhood salon for some time and I finally found it! Jenny was my stylist and she gave me a stylish cut and did a fantastic job with my high and low lights. I will definitely become a Robert Stuart Salon regular.

I feel horrible inside that I am writing this. The ""stylist"" was so nice to me and so was the manager and they even gave me a candy to write a positive review on yelp and citysearch. But unfortunately theres nothing positive about this place. The place at best is mediocre. I am new to UWS and after a brief encounter at other places in the neighborhood, I tried Robert Stuart salon hoping it would be as nice as the place looks from outside.

The stylist can talk well, but cant style.

Sorry, I have no choice but to move on.

The stylist destroyed my hair style and now I am waiting for my hair to grow back so that someone can fix it.

I can get a better haircut for less than 40 bucks with tips in the neighborhood.

This place may be good for women, but guys please avoit it. There used to be a great stylist called Vincent but I think he left...and Roberts excuse is that Vincent moved to Hawaii.

Avoid this place at all cost. I dont get the fanfare I see here.

PS> if anyone happens to know where Vincent works now, please email me at mbac32@gmail

Thanks!

I had two great hairdressers, the second one I truly loved as she did an excellent job and gave great personal attention to her clients. Needless to say both were let go without warning. The salon's MO is to take the appointment with the preferred stylist (obviously not with Robert-see other reviews) without letting you know she is no longer there, only to be told as you walk in for the appointment.

The first time it happened, I thought shame on them. The second time it happened... I never went back, and never will!

As women, we know it's harder to find a great hairdresser than it is a husband. If anyone knows where Sandy went, please post the name of the salon.

My wife and I have relied on Robert Stuart to style our hair for 5 years. Robert restyled our cuts, improving them considerably, and my wife's color has been consistently attractive and realistic. The store is small and friendly; they stay pretty close to schedule without sparing the time to do a good job; and the price is fair and affordable. Highly recommended.

I recently had the Keratin complex straightening and I was treated very professionaly by Jake, he was taking very good care of every part of the process, my hair felt smooth and healthy. According to them and to a review I saw on a magazzine it costs $450 and they charge $350. It's been 2 months now and my hair still looks great.

I first made my appointment with Robert Stuart Salon when trying to find a stylist convenient to work and home. There were a couple of reasons I selected this particular salon. One, the reviews overall were very favorable. Most clients seemed to be happy with their experience. But also telling were the management's responses to unfavorable comments. They were professional and sincerely demonstrated an interest in fixing any problem or concerns expressed by an unhappy customer. This spoke a lot to the integrity of the establishment. Ive gone to the salon several times now and do see a high focus on customer service. Ive never had to wait for my appointment. Someone always greats me when I arrive. The only criticism that I have is the small area in the back that serves as changing room, coat closet, shampoo area and employee lounge. It gets a little overcrowded at times and can feel a little awkward sitting with the employees during their breaks. Overall Ill continue to patronize the salon and feel comfortable recommending to others. They all seem capable and skilled in what they do. A great neighborhood business!

There are two things one should never skimp on, a good pair of jeans and a great haircut. Robert sat me down and listened to exactly what I wanted. He explained what he was going to do achieve the desired look and the cut was perfect. Overall it was a delightful experience -

I knew I found my place about 6 months ago the moment I sat down in the chair and I didn't have to explain anything. Despite being a first timer, the stylist knew exactly how long it had been since my last cut and even knew how I typically like my hair cut. I've become a regular since then and I'm always thrilled with the results. \r

The staff is incredibly friendly (they actually get along with each other too) which makes for a relaxing experience and atmosphere. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and appreciated. \r

Since I moved in to Manhattan, I had a hard time deciding where to go for my hair. I have always paid between $175-200 for a good cut in the city because my hair is very important to me. However, I was sick of paying so much for a cut that really didnt turn heads. I found Robert Stuart Salon through an archive article in the NYTimes and decided to try a Salon that was known for the best value for price. I got a cut and style that was the better than any other Salon that I have ever been to. Diane the stylist consulted with me on facial features, volume in hair etc. to produce a style that really accentuated my features. I am 26 y/o and wanted something a little different. Not only did I get something that was in line with the latest celeb styles, I got an experience that surpasses anything else. Even the prep done by Lullieta included a scalp massage that was better than scalp massages provided by Bliss Spas. The style cut and blowdry was 65.00 for a sr. stylist. Which, if you want a great cut, will usually run someone about $175-200 for an equally skilled competitor. I usually dont bother writing reviews but this experience was so good that I would put my neck on the line and suggest anyone to try them out. They are right on amsterdam between 84th and 85th. Stop paying too much to go to pretentious salons when Robert Stuart is the best value for your money ever! One the walk home 3 construction guys whistled, a few men in columbus circle turned their heads and that was enough for me to conclude that it was the best money I ever spent.

Every girl dreams of the perfect New York City haircut and Robert at the Robert Stuart Salon delivers on this flawlessly. He's an innovative hairstylist who always takes the time to truly understand his subject. He makes recommendations as to what haircuts and color would compliment your personality and look. Hes an artist by craft and can accommodate the edgy client or the more conservative traditionalist. Finding the right stylist in NYC at the right price is such a daunting task but after seeing Robert just once, I absolutely refuse to use anyone else. I cannot count how many compliments I have gotten since my cut with Robert. In the interest of full disclosure and at the risk of sounding vain, I have to admit I feel gorgeous and completely confident after visiting him. There are few stylists in NYC who can accomplish such a feat.

Not one to usually write a review, after visiting the Robert Stuart Salon on the UWS, I felt driven to do so. After having been kept waiting for 30 minutes, I asked Robert for 2-3 inches to be trimmed from my hair and ended up with 3 inches from one side and 5 from the other. When I went back for my hair to be fixed, Robert then took off 3 inches off the longer side, making it uneven on the other side. Eventually another stylist had to fix Robert's horrendous mistakes. I came out with my hair 6 inches shorter, and not the 2-3 as I originally wanted. Apparently Robert Stuart has been in the haircutting business for over 25 years. Whatever talent he may have had at one time, is well and truly gone.

My wife and I think Robert Stuart is by far the very best hair stylist either of us has ever seen. He takes time to get to know you and offers suggestions about hair styles that complement your personality, your profession, and your features. It?s a total package. But you don?t have to take that description. Consider this: my wife and I have an absolutely beautiful 16-month old daughter. Recently, we asked Robert to give our daughter her very first haircut. All she needed was a little bit trimmed to give her hair a bit of definition. We could have trimmed her hair ourselves. We could have asked someone in our family to do it. We could have gone to any salon in all of New York City. We asked Robert Stuart to do this for us. We trusted our daughter to him, and he was nothing short of fantastic. What higher endorsement can anyone offer than to ask someone to give your child her/his first haircut? That?s how good Robert Stuart ? and his entire team ? are.

Robert gives a great men's haircut. I say this as a 30 year old guy who was tired of the rough $15 cuts I used to get from old fashioned barber shops. I went to Robert 5 years ago to fix a haircut I got from one of those barbers and have been going ever since. Whether you want a conservative men's cut or something more edgy, Robert can do it.

the staff at robert stuart salon is very, very unhappy: the first two stylists i was given [neither of whom i liked very much] were fired. finally i found one i liked, and that one was just fired. the turnover at this salon is greater than any i've ever been to, and i'm not going back. i've spoken with two stylists who tell me that robert stuart himself is paranoid and accuses the staff of whispering about him in the back room. if i worked there i'd whisper about him: he's a nasty employer. i have found somewhere else to go. i would not recommend going to robert stuart: you can get your hair done for much less money somewhere else, where you can also depend on seeing your favorite stylist week after week. \r
