If you enjoy teppanyaki/hibachi, this is the place for you. The food is fresh and well prepared. They have great lunch specials Monday - Friday, reasonably priced for large portions. Make sure you get the fried rice. It's the best!

The only downside for me is the table service. The servers don't check on you frequently enough to remove your dishes, fill your drinks, etc.

The food is fantastic, remarkable, exquisite, and amazing. One of the best sushi places I have ever been to, and the people that work there are the utmost passionate and gentile with their work. The service is outstanding and the people are polite. ONE OF THE BEST!!!

We found this restaurant via computer search and reading reviews after moving here from Austin. The manager is very prompt at seating, the staff is friendly (but sometimes absent-minded), and the fish here has always been fresh each time we've eaten there. We really like the intimacy and smallness of the dining room, it's not so loud that you can't hold a conversation with your friends. Highly recommended, prices reasonable.

We went here for dinner on Saturday night. It was not crowded whatsoever. We ordered the pepper seared tuna, jazz roll, tiger roll, and seaweed salad. The tuna was delicious and almost melted in my mouth. The sushi rolls were decent, nothing special. The pieces were not uniformly cut and were HUGE. The seaweed salad was dry and small. The service left more to be desired. We never got water refills. When we asked for more cocktails, they took forever and I actually saw the drinks sitting on the bar for over 20 minutes. When our food first came out, the waiter clumsily threw the food down, almost breaking some plates and glasses, and then he ran off. It took us 15 minutes to flag someone down for utensils and chopsticks. I might give this place another chance...good location, ample parking, no wait.

I have been going to Taiko for a couple years now for the hibachi "show" with my children and they love it. The food is good and always fresh but lately the service has been getting progressively worse. When it is brought to the managers attention he basically ignores you. The taste of the food far outweighs the service though. So if you can get over the EXTRA POOR SERVICE (just don't tip--maybe they will get it one day!!!!!) then it's a good place to go.

My wife and I have been to Taiko once before, and sat at the sushi bar. The food was great, customer service not so much, but we dealt with it. My mother was in town and our usual sushi restaurant, TOMO (highly recommended) was not open due to power outage from Hurricane Ike. We thought we'd give Taiko another shot. We arrived, and seated promptly ad a hibachi grill. Ordered our drinks, and just as they were delivered, SOMETHING CRAWLED ACROSS THE TABLE. If it had been on the floor, we still would have left, but MAY have come back. This is unacceptable. Unless you enjoy "surprises" crawling in your food, don't visit Taiko.

My friends and I go here nearly every Friday, we are big fans of the edamame, tuna and salmon sushi, and the LOBSTER TEMPURA! It's not on the menu, usually written as a special on a dry erase board, and its astounding! It keeps bringing us back, even though the service leaves something to be desired. The past two times that I have dined there, they forgot my edamame (which was brought out to me eventually) and the second time, the waiter was gone for nearly our entire meal and we had to stand up to get his attention for refills. The service could use major improvement, but that amazing lobster tempura keeps us salivating and waiting for the next Friday. Just go and hope you get a decent waiter.

It is very close to my home. I have given it two chances, and I've been disappointed both times. The sushi was not fresh. I did not even finish my meal the second time I visited Taiko.

Based on all the good reviews, I assume that this restaurant was good in the past. Possibly new management or just a case of a made restaurant trying to cut costs. Either way, save your money and go somewhere else.

I have been going to Taiko for many years now because of the freshest sushi in Houston and relaxing atmosphere. I took some friends last week ( who had not been) and they LOVED it. We went for a birthday celebration and had the best time. Three of us had sushi and one ordered the hibachi scallops. The rolls are so big and the presentation is beautiful but more than that the taste is DELICIOUS!!! The chocolate birthday cake they brought was so rich and tasty and best of all FREE!!!! I love the place because you can go for a quiet date or take the kids and have fun watching the chef on the hibachi grill.

I ordered Sashimi Imperial for $47, it include 30 pieces sashimi from 10 kinds of chef's best choice. It includes 2 salads, 2 miso soups, and 2 bowl of sushi rice. However, when I counted it, it only has 9 kinds of fishes and total 27 pieces in total. When the server knew that she just brings me 3 pieces of tuna which is already on the boat. I told her there was tuna already and she just said we don?t have any other kind of fish for the Sashimi Combination. Moreover, she cannot name the fish.

Delicious. Good service. I will definitely be back! The Dancing Tuna and Rainbow Rolls were amazing. And I finally found fluke on a sushi menu out here!! It's one of my favorite fishes and out here (I am from NYC) . The only disappointment was the garden salad , I had higher expectations for the dressing. Even the dessert was terrific - we had the Chocolate Chocolate...mousse and ice cream, beautifully presented and very yummy. Taiko is only a few blocks from where we live, and we are thrilled to have found such a great sushi place so close.

Pros: Excellent sushi, steak

Cons: Parking sometime

I went to Taiko with a group of friends recently and ordered the hibachi scallops. The next morning I woke up with a stomach ache, nausea, and a fever. I hadn't eaten anything else suspicious before, so I know it was the scallops. I know it's a risk eating seafood anywhere, but these were cooked scallops, not sushi or sashimi.

They have great hibachi food here! Those chefs are always so entertaining. The rolls are not too bad either, but I would much rather eat their grilled food. It might be a little hard to find, since it kind of hides away in a corner of its shopping strip off Westheimer..but you won't be disappointed with your experience. Lots of families with kids dine here too.

I LOVE TAIKO!!! I have been going to Taiko for 4 years and have always had consistent food and service. They have the FRESHEST and most delicious sushi! I am super picky about sushi and Taiko is the absolute best! The pieces are HUGE and the ambience is perfect for dining and conversation. I have taken my pickest friends and my husband ( who hated sushi before eating at Taiko) and all now love it.

i know this restaurant for almost 5 years!!! it is a good restaurant to have dinner with friends.
however, their service is not good anymore, all the good wait staves left already. all the servers seem not well training. they don't really know their menu as we know. also, servers are not sure our order either. i do think that taiko has some problems. the manager or owner seems don't care because we always see one guy( should be manager) watch tv. of course, my waiter also watch tv when we need him!!! we was waiting for long time to get help.it already happened 3 times. that is reason why service is getting worse.
their sushi is ok right now, but not great as before. stake is great, but sometimes is very salty i can tell you. i really don't know why they are running their business so bad even they have 5 years business. i might give them one more chance might be not.
i just want people know that taiko is not good as before!!!!!!!!!!!

We'd been frequenting Taiko a couple of times a month, but were very disappointed on our last visit. Due to a keystone kops series of screw-ups, over an our passed after we ordered, and we still hadn't been served.

We tried to talk with the manager (who was friendly every other time we'd visited) but he didn't seem to care that the staff had dropped the ball. He seemed bothered by the fact that a mere customer would want to take up his valuable time. We'll spend our money in more hospitible establishments.

I've been to many hibachi restaurants in Houston, but Taiko is the best one I have ever been to.It's not only because the atmosphere,it's the food of coz.But make sure u request the right chef.I always request chef DAVID, he cooks fast, but that doesn't mean less quality. His cooking is fast and delicious. And most of all, he is funny. He can make everybody has a good time while eating his food. When I first time in Taiko,I had the head chef of the house served me,but obviously, his cooking S-U-C-K-S.Especially the way how he cooks the steak,he is steaming them not grill them.Uhh.. bad taste. And also he always go back to kitchen during his cooking, seems he always forget bring something. So if u are in a hurry during lunch time,do NOT request this guy to serve u.U only got 1 hr,and it takes him 45 mins to cook for u.Just a reminder,no offend.

...But the chicken teriyaki "bento box" for lunch was amazing and more than I could eat. The chicken was juicy, the tempura shrimp were gigantic, the veggies were crisp and fresh, and the salad had a lovely ginger-fruit dressing. I gave the California rolls to my lunch companions because I was stuffed. All for less than $8! Highly recommended.

I don't understand why this restaraunt was voted best in Houston. There are many other better more value oriented places like Miyako, Cafe Japon and Tokyohana. The quantity of food is pathetic and the price is HIGH. The quality is good though. Steak is better than the sushi rolls and sashimi.

I am visiting the Houston area and went to the restaurant because of the reveiws I read on CitySearch. I must say they were right on. It was a bit tough to find on busy Westheimer, but well worth the search. The food was excellent and because I was there in the late afternoon there was no crowd. The chef even gave me an order of a cucumber dish on the house as I was the only person at the bar at the time. Excellent restaurant and I would HIGHLY recommend it if you are in the Houston area!!

Although the ambiance may not be like the "meeting place" to hang out before the party life begins, the sush was awesome!!! The service was wonderful.

There is no question this is the best Japanese restaurant in town, bar none. The food is consistently delicious, and the service is second to none, even during very busy times (which is often).
Albert is always looking for new and distinctive menu items, and he succeeds on a regular basis; so you will usually find something delectable that you haven't tried before on your previous visits. He also maintains one of the best selections of wine to be found in a restaurant of this type; a definite plus.
If you're looking for a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience -- at prices that belie the quality -- treat yourself (and your friends) to this outstanding restaurant.

I dined there just last evening with some friends. I choose this restaurant after reading all of the rave reviews on citysearch.com. The evening started out fairly well but started to go down hill as soon as we were seated at our table. I ordered several sushi items and my friend ordered items to be cooked at the table. Well the sushi didn't arrive until after the others had already been served all 3 courses of their meals. Then when having my cocktail refilled at the table, after moving from the bar, came back tasting like fruit punch. Apparently they had run out of cranberry juice and decided to substitute cherry juice in its place and serve it to make $5 - which was promptly sent back and not removed from the final bill. I will not be going back!

The sushi/sashimi is on a different level from most place. Slightly pricey if you order by piece, but very reasonal for a chef selection.
I was very surprised by the overall quality of dining experience.

Pros: excellent quality

.

We received the best roll anywhere and what had to
be an intentional insult with the chirashi. My roll, with blackpepper seared tuna and avacado, and tiny green roe was decorated with and an unusual, light, sweet-tart sauce refreshingly different from that orange mayonaisse
goo. Each piece took you through several unusual, sumptuous tastes experiences. Many rolls described
were innovative with out being overdone.
Now, about this chirashi. Ordering this dish dozens of times in at least 10 restaurants, we receive normal sashimi cuts, not scraps, covering a bed of seasoned rice.
Here we got a paltry amount extended by cucumber, pickled radish or squash, and shredded daikon. Most fish pieces of fish tasted neither fresh nor lacked sinew. Several were the size of a fat dime and could be none other than the misshapened end cuts. If this is typical for chirashi anywhere else, my apologies for this review.

I travel alot and I look for places that make you feel at home. I sit at the bar and talk to the guy from New York behind the bar and watch ESPN. The sashimi is great. I recommend this place for the food and service.

This restaurant is a must try! You will fall in love with the innovative sushi rolls and delicious food. The hibachi is also great! Most people eat hibachi for the show, but the hibachi chefs really know what they are doing. The chicken was so tender and not at all dry. The sushi are really fresh and wonderful. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys Japanese food and good service.

Taiko has what is probably the best looking sushi in Houston. Artful and creative, not to mention incredibly fresh and delicious. You can't go wrong here!

The selection of sushi is very fresh, but the habachi could have been better. Service is good but not great. Overall I would remember this restaurant to other people.

Taiko has the best sushi that I have had in the Houston area. My boyfriend and I have tried almost every sushi restaurant in the Houston area and this is by far, the best. The service is great too. And, if you don't like raw fish but like the different rolls and hand rolls that are offered, they have a huge variety of their own "specialty" rolls. My favorite roll they have is the "scorpion roll"..it has shrimp tempura in the middle, with cream cheese, jalapenos, and cucumbers. That is then rolled in Soy Bean Paper (vs the seaweed paper) and that is rolled in rice with snow crab on top and a sauce squeezed on top. It is scrumptuous!!!!

My husband and I used to go to Miyako all the time, now Taiko is our favorite sushi place. They have awesome specialty rolls. We made the mistake of ordering the Love Boat for two--talk about A LOT of food and good too. Great place.
