Don't let the "pizza" name fool you! This place is a true gem, with wonderful lunch specials and incredible bread. Very reasonably priced. Cafeteria-style service. Try the lasagna -- it is mouth-watering!

They make the pizza in front of you, so you know it's fresh. I love it here b/c they are the only ones who put enough sauce in the pizza to satisfy my taste! yum yum yum...

Pros: Plenty of parking space, pizza consistently good

Cons: nothing!

The pizza sauces need to be updated for sure, they taste like they came out of the can to the pizza, they need more flavor, garlic, oregano etc

Have always enjoyed the food here until the other night when we were refused service. The hours on the door read that the restaurant is open until 10:00 pm. We walked in the door at 9:30 and were told we could only order to go. There were quite a few tables with people still eating and they refused to let us sit to enjoy our meal. Needless to say we did not order. We were very disappointed with the way we were treated and are finding very hard to return.

The title says it all. I've never even tried any of their other pizza because I'm so addicted to the New York style cheese pizza. Everytime we go, we each order a house salad and a piece of thin-crust cheese pizza. (Hot enough that you have to bite into it c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y; plenty of yummy cheese and not too much sauce; tasty crust that isn't overly crispy!) Then we split a piece of Romano's amazing cheesecake.

As far as I'm concerned, that's a meal made in heaven!

Pros: Best thin crust cheese pizza I've ever had.

Cons: The pieces are huge; I can only eat one slice! :-(

$24.26 for a medium (14") thin crust vegetable pizza. That?s like 5oz of bread & a few vegetables. There was practically no sauce or cheese. It was it was a terrible pizza, worst I've ever had. Twenty-five bucks?? Comon, it cost less than a dollar or two to make that pizza, the box was probably more expensive than the pizza. I'm not making any money off this business, why should I arbitrarily kick in on the rent?? I will never, ever, EVER, go back to that place.

Easily the best New York style pizza in the Houston, and I try it at different restaurants every chance I get. They also have some great seafood pastas which my girlfriend adores. I recommend their chicken francese. Although the layout of the restaurant is a little weird, their food more than makes up for it. Go there and I guarantee you will return.

My fiance use to live down in mid-town when we were dating. I lived in the woodlands so we'd occasionally grab a pizza at Romanos. This place is family owned and the people are very nice. I got to the point where if I was in town I'd stop by Romanos on my way home just so I could get a pizza to-go. The owners started to recognize me since I went there so much. Now, we live in Cinco Ranch in Katy but still attend church in the midtown area. We sometimes will decide not to eat pizza on a Friday or Saturday just so we can have Ramonos on Sunday.

Ya know, when I first moved to the Houston area, I heard people raving about this place. So I went to try is out. I am not a complex girl, so ofcource, I ordered a basic pepporoni pizza. Well, the pizza came and it was just "ok". NOTHING TO GO CRAZY OVER. So when I got home, I called the place to just give my input, I asked to speak with the manager, and some waiter with an ego trip was qustioning as to why I needed to speak with the manager. As if a manager of a pizza shop was the president. Finally, this guy was just so rude, I hung up. Well, this just really made me more disappointed, so the next day I was at work with this on my mind, so I called back, this time asking for the owner. Well I guess this place is so "high end" the owner does not feel it is important for him to come to the phone to hear feedback from his customers. So, all in all, over price average pizza with a bad attitude.

Being a native NYer living in TX, I thought I'd have to book a plane ticket every time I got a craving for good pizza. Luckily though, I found Romano's on West Gray. When you walk through the glass doors, you feel like you've been transplanted to NY. They have the Yankees playing on the TV and the NY accents being thrown at you when you order your food. My husband and I are so glad we found this place. The pizza and pasta dishes are delicious. My hubby and I are big fans of the Chicken Francese and Chicken Marsala.

After reading the editorial reviews on this and one other city guide about how expat NYers like me would love this place, I finally got a chance to visit this past weekend. You can tell from looking at the display exactly what it's going to taste like.

It's not quite as good as a good NYC pizza; the sauce needs a little boost, maybe oregano, and the cheese or sauce is missing a little tang, or at least is only inconsistently achieving it. But the parts are all right there: the crust is excellent, perfectly thin and with the right snap; the sauce and cheese are the correct amount, and in proportion; and the taste and texture are accurately delicate. The sauce just needs a little boost.

But I'm nitpicking. It's easily one of the five best pizzas (#3 or #4) I've had since leaving New York for college, and I'd recommend it to anyone. If you're used to eating pizza from the giant chains or, in Houston, from a Star-type pizzeria, you might be turned off from the thinness or potential paucity of ingredients (I only had basic cheese), and that would be wrongheaded, because this is what pizza is supposed to taste like. Toppings and extra cheese are used to hide taste.

I've been back for slices twice since that first time last week.

THE BEST!!! I remember when Romano's first open, back when the Marshall's next door was a movie theater. I wasn't sure if the place would make it, but I am so glad they did! My family loves the place! We have been loyal customers for years. I wish they still did delivery. I have yet to find any Italian restaurant that can beat their Chicken Marsala. And their meat sauce is to die for! I can't tell you how much I love this place. You just can't top this place!!!!

Real NY pizza in Texas...WOW!
I am yet another NY transplant and have been here about 28 years now. There are only two places to eat NY pizza, in NY and at Romano's! I have a neice living in Seacucus, NJ and she came to visit and said Romano's has better NY pizza than anywhere outside of Manhattan (where she lived most of her life). Vinny and Franky are the best...you walk in and almost feel like you're home. Everything I've tried on their menu is really good. And OMG, the sauce is fabulous, the crust is perfect. I went to their other location once and it didn't even come close to the one on Waugh...I can't figure that out but but it is not the same taste at all, to me. I highly recommend Romano's to anyone looking for good NY pizza. Suggestion.. go during off peak times because the joint is so popular it's hard to get a table during regular meal times. Thank you Vinny and Franky.

Pros: the next best thing to being in NY for pizza and casual itialian food

Cons: really crowded at peak times, hard to get a table

In response to the previous post, "the owners", I'm guessing you've never met "the owners". If you ever meet them you'll see, they'd never be caught dead writing reviews on a computer, just doesn't go hand in hand with their Italian bravado.

With that said, if you want really good, in my opinion the best pizza I've tried in all of the greater Houston area, head to Romano's. The crust is perfect, very crunchy and doesn't flop in the middle like most pizza out there and the sauce is what pizza sauce is supposed to taste like. I was born in NY, so I know what good pizza tastes like.

The entrees are also very authentic and tasty. I love the baked ziti, lasagna, and fettuccine alfredo. Although i love my pasta, I've ventured out there and tried the veal scallopini and I must say I was impressed.

So all in all, for those who might be confused as to why there might be a few questionable reviews, check it out for yourself, and you'll see that like the other 99.99% of people who visit Romano's, you'll experience some of the best food Houston has to offer.

I see that citysearch has 5 stars for so many restaurants...a lot that stink... the reason I'm saying this on here is because of the "authentic" NY taste. I'm a born and bred Manhattanite living in Houston. I don't think it's physically possible to match NY pizza. Although they do a good pizza here. Smaller than NY, a little thinner too. More expensive for other Italian staples. Salads are small for what you pay. I would still recommend it anyway.

As a native New Yorker, this place undoubtedly makes what I consider to be the best replica of the pizza I grew up on back at home. There are three notable attributes, in my eyes, that qualify this place as the best pizza in Houston (or rather the best NY style pizza): 1) Thin crust- the crust is very light, yet not overcooked, and the end crust is airy. 2) The appropriate ratio of cheese to pizza sauce. 3) U can fold it. I should note that I did not eat there, but instead opted for take-out. Service was prompt, as I expected. Go there. You will NOT be disappointed.

My date ordered a salad and I ordered a slice of cheese pizza. My pizza didnt come out after 15 minutes to my table. I had to go ask where it was then they gave it to me. That defeats the whole purpose of a place where you take a number to your table to have them bring it out. The pizza was good when I finally got it. My date said the salad was not very good.

...and honestly, ranks way up there on my list of favorites regardless of location. you won't necessarily get your choice of interesting/exotic pies, but they perfect the types and toppings offered. quite sadly, however, i often only get to order a single slice. the romano's baked ziti is the best i've ever had, and i find it too hard to pass up when there. along with the ziti, they offer many other classic italian dishes. the owners (who are always right behind the counter) are extremely personable, and the atmosphere is as close to 'new york' as one will ever find in houston as well.

An Upstate New Yorker displaced in Texas, I have made it my mission to find the best pizza in town. While there are still some flaws to be worked out, such as the fact that they do not make a bunch of specialty slices, but rather just put the items you request on top of cheese and then reheat, this pizza is the closest to the real thing that I've found yet in Houston. Don't go expecting authentic pizza, but it is by far the most acceptable I've found so far. Crust is perfect - I can't believe how hard Texans find it to make the crust crispy yet soft and the right thickness. They don't use cheap crappy cheese, and the sauce is correct pizza sauce, not marinara. Could use a little more salt and oregano in the sauce, though. Overall score with 10 being Pavone's Pizza in Manlius, this place scores a 7.5. Good enough for this New Yorker and MILES above the NY Pizzerias and Gotham Pizzas in this neighborhood. Give it a try! You'll be pleasantly suprised.

I live two blocks around the corner from this place. The first time I saw this place, I thought, this is just some strip mall pizzaria. I was WRONG! I got addicted to their Lasagna, and then I tasted their pizza. Whoa! I will never again eat another pizza from another place unless someone else is paying for it. My Uncle is from N.Y. and he was coming down here for a wedding. He wanted some decent pizza. I took him to Romanos and he said it was as good or even better that N. Y. pizza. Folks, this pizza place will get bigger in the next 2 years. Enjoy it while it is in its infant stage. Because in its infant stage, it remains pure, good and reliable!

I've always been turned off by the location of the joint, but finally decided to give it a try after several recommendations. I'm so happy I did. Such yummy food, and so much of it! The Baked Ziti gets two thumbs up. It's better for take-out than dining-in as it's quite loud and a lil cramped.

I love the thin, crispy crust on the pizza. The margarita pizza beats my own because of the crust. The lasagna is just right. A very friendly, family operation at the Memorial location.

This is the best pizza in Houston!!! Being from New York which in my opinion has the best pizza. This place stole my heart the first time I tried it. My kids, born and raised in Houston, knew nothing about good pizza, all they ever tried was Pizza Hut and those other places which I don't like. One taste of pizza from Romano and bam, we always have to make that trip from the Northwest side because now they won't eat anything else. I'm just waiting for one to be builded in the 290 area, hint, hint.

Mr. Frank and Mr. Vinny work their tails off to deliver the best tasting Italian fare in town. The red sauce, the white sauce, the pasta, the pizza, the calzone, the meatballs, the garlic bread are all unbeatable for the taste, not to mention the price. We go every week to this eatery and our kids eat very well too. They are opened 7days a week and late, so yOu can go in wearing your grubs or your work clothes, everyone is welcomed, dressed as you are, anytime. Just wish they'd expand their wine selection...... nah.....forgetaboutit!

I think you get a great deal for your money here! Salad and garlic bread are included with all the entrees and the food is so very good for the price. And you can even get wine with your meal. It has a really neat New York meets Houston atmosphere.

Pros: Tasty, gerat marina sauce, a lot for the money

.

Another transplanted NJ convert. Sometimes I think their pizza is better than back home.

I live in the Bay Area now. Ten million people here, yet the pizza doesn't even come close to Romano's.

I told one of the guys I was moving to California during my last visit. He said, "Don't die in an earthquake."

Now that's a New Yorker.

Another Italian transplant from New York. My family eats at Romano's every week. Everyone we have told about it is now a regular. If you like real New York style pizza, this is the real thing. We go to both locations. Memorial location is better suited to families.

I hail from NY and have lived in Houston for over 10 years. Until I recently heard about Romano's I suffered through pretty average (at best!) pizza. Romano's is anything but that, with a crust and sauce like the real deal. Always friendly with a game on tv, no pretentions, just solid fare. My wife, who is from here, isn't a big fan of thin crust pizza, but likes the other standard Italian dishes.

Super food at great prices at their new location on Memorial Drive! Wonderful fresh pasta and warm welcome from staff...sounds like W. Gray, only now in W. Houston. Tables are close and were sometimes slow to be cleaned (on the night of our visit). But, hey, make some new friends at the table nearby and share a carafe of wine!

The best I can say is that whenever I take friends to this place they always return on their own and thank me months later for introducing them to this place. These guys make the best pizza in Houston, and also some fantastic entrees, as good as any Italian restaurant in Houston. Their selection of top qualty ingredients really makes the difference. Great Food, Great Service, Great Value, and TONS of repeat customers; do I really need to say more?

I'm not normally into greasy food but boy am I glad that I ate here. The food is that greasy, gooey, old world pizza that is infamous. I recommend it for groups of friends.

Great Pizza, Great Pasta & Great Service. Frank and Vinny are great! Authentic Italian New york natives. The Shrimp Parmigiana is excellent, as well as, the Baked Ziti. Even the Spaghetti with Marinara has its own flare. But you must accompany everything with a slice of cheese pizza, it is like no other in Houston. Outside dining is nice at night or in the day for people watching! It's overall an excellent casual Italian restaurant and pizzeria!

Coming from New York, this is the best pizza that Houston has to offer. My children were born and raised here in Houston and grew up eating Pizza Hut. When I took them there and told them this is what real pizza taste like, they don't want to eat any other pizza now, it's the BEST IN HOUSTON!!!!

Best NY-style pizza in Houston. The salads are great, as are the pasta dishes. Get a big slice of cheese pizza and watch a game on ESPN. It's a cozy, friendly place that I return to again and again. I can't eat another other pizza since discovering Romano's.

The pizza was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. The pastas looked a bit pricey for a casual joint.

You're going to love this place. Run by two cousins from Queens, NY, I found this to be a nice bit of home, with cooking that would make my Grandma happy.

Molto bene! Abondanza!

You want the best pizzza in Houston-you'll find it at Romano's! There's always some pasta dinner specials on the daily blackboard...try 'em! Two of my favorite dinners are the Chicken Marsala and good ol' Spaghetti with Meatballs. Romano's is a River Oaks favorite....get take out or enjoy very casual dining in their newly constructed "strip center" cafe. This place is popular for one reason---THE FOOD!!! You won't be disappointed!

O.K. - So Star delivers, but if you REALLY want good quality pizza or fresh from an Italian kitchen pasta dishes, Romano's is the place to go!
Drop some white linen on the tables there and they could charge twice what they do for their food. The owners/chefs are fun, everyone knows your name and they have the best food in the city -- A CAN'T MISS!!
Faithful diners - Michelle & Glenn
