I have had Rick work on my cars and many friends over the years. He is the best diagnostician on car problem I have ever met. I personally recommend him to anyone who needs professional automotive service. People have no idea what is wrong with their car when brought to the mechanic who spends hours or troubleshooting to find a bad plug. Why if it is so easy then diagnose and repair your car yourself. Some people on this blog seem to want something for nothing. I want superb service and am willing to pay for it. Rick is a professional master mechanic and cannot fix cars for free. I suggest Joe and Annotly go to Walmart to get what you are willing to pay for and doubt your car gets fixed. Right minded persons go to professional mechanics for service. The fact you had to pay cash tells me you were a nut and Rick figured you out.

people must be crazy to go here, got a friend who had battery problems went to simms, paid them 200dollars for a battery and they charged another 195 to install, diagnose, that is bull, advance will install a battery for free if you buy it off of them. now that is taking advantage of people. just plain ripping people off. if he was up to date on his certifactions as he says tim b car he should be able to diagnoise with out big equipment at least to get running to put on the big equipment. i have worked on cars all my life, and can temp till get it to a diag machine. people dont know and they can sell you anything.

My worst experience in 15 years. Rude, changing prices by the day. That guy needs a psychiatrist. Complained that he "did not enjoy this job" - sure, I am paying him for having fun. The car had a problem talking to a state inspection station - wiring or something. He requested $90 for diagnostics. Another day he called and said that he did not find a problem yet, therefore needs another $90 - still for the same diagnostics! Finally, he charged me $90 for a connector that probably cost $10, plus 2hrs @ $90/hr for replacing it - adding up to $480 total. And MADE ME PAY CASH ONLY. Must be a drug dealer or something.

Mr. Simms is a great person to do business with. His knowledge of the field is immense and in the rare circumstance that he does not have the skill to do the job, he will tell you straight out. My entire family has been using his services for many years now.

My Toyota Highlander front end was shaking when braking to the point that my wife was scared to drive it. We were headed to Big Bend National Park on Wednesday afternoon and she insisted we get if fixed before we leave. I called Simms on Monday around noon and even though they were busy they were able to take my car in and do a complete brake job for considerably less than the dealer. Plus Simms even used Toyota brand parts. I was really worried that the front suspension was worn. The owner took his time to explain and show me what the problem was. I got a courtious call from his shop explaining the charges and asking permission to proceed with the repairs. The car now drives and stops like a dream.

Overall an excellent experience.

Pros: Repaired my car promptly

Cons: none that I can think of

I am Rick Simms, the owner of Simms Automotive, and would like to respond Tim??s review of my shop. There are a few details he fails to mention.

1. Tim's vehicle would not malfunction long enough
in order to hook up instruments and perform a
diagnosis.
2. This information was reported to Tim that we
would not be able to perform a pinpoint
diagnosis.
3. It was noted the fuel pump was noisy and could
possibly cause his complaint. He was told that
the fuel pump was not submitted as an absolute
fix.
4. A fuel pump and relay were replaced at Tim's
request.
5. When Tim's vehicle left the shop, it was running
fine, and Tim never contacted us about any
continued problem.
6. Lastly, Tim stated his opinion that we were not
equipped to diagnose electrical problems.
I disagree. I have equipped my shop with
the latest in tools, technology, and equipment.
My qualifications are listed below:

I am an ASE Certified Master Automotive
Technician.
I am an L1 Advanced Level Specialist (only 3%
of technicians in the United States possess
these certifications).
I am a Recognized Emission Repair Facility of
Texas.

I have been a certified automotive technician
for 31 years, and have been in business at this
location for 25 years.

I took my car in with an intermittant electrical problem. The darn thing would quit and I would have to wait for a few minutes and then it would start & run normally again. No check engine light, no warning - Frustrating.

I have to agree that the Sims are a wonderful couple. Rick takes great pains to explain everything... but in the end I spent $800 and still had a car that had the same problem. He rewired the distrubutor harness and told me I needed a new fuel pump. After that he said he had done all he could do and that electrical issues wher just hard to pinpoint.

I finally got out my multimeter and traced the problem myself... it took about 3 hours and cost me $5 for a new piece of wire + terminals - and the car has run fine since.

I would not use their shop if I had anything more than routine mechanical issues. They are not equipped to diagnose electrical problems.

Friendly and honest, family run automotive shop. Unfortunately, we have had cause to use their services alot this year and they have been consistently wonderful. Each time I have brought a car in they have handled the diagnostics and repair in a timely manner, keeping me updated by phone, and providing a full explanation of everything they needed to do. Rick Simms, the owner, makes a point of personally speaking to you regarding the problems with your car and what he would and would not advise doing. There have been times when he has told me he could do more, but that he didn't think it was necessary. "Ihave done as much as I would for my car" he'll say, rather than charging an arm and a leg for unneeded work. He has even cut some labor off the cost of repairs for me when he wasn't able to definitively diagnose a problem.
