This was some very strong BBQ. I got a three meat dinner meal and it was well priced with a good amount of food. The meat was prepared tremendously. I was very pleased. I was, however, disappointed in the sauce. I wish I could combine the sauces of Smokey Bones with this place. I would be in heaven. Even with that, I really enjoyed my meal. The jalapeno bread was fantastic. I also enjoyed the apple backed beans. It was a pleasant surprise. Something different for me.

There might be an appropriate occasion for eating at Goode Company. For example, perhaps you are forced to entertain someone visiting from the northeast and you do not want them to fall in love with awesome ??que and move to Texas or perhaps you simply need to eat brisket NOW and cannot stand to drive the half hour or so it takes to get to one of the awesome authentic joints on the outskirts of town. Yes, I do understand that there is a time and a place for Goode Co. but why anyone would come here outside of those given scenarios is beyond my comprehension. This may qualify as barbeque in other parts of the country, but this is Texas and we expect more than meat slathered with sauce.
Many praise the pecan pie as well. This oozing mess of sugary goop sprinkled with pecans on pre-made crust must certainly be more addicting than crack for only a victim of addiction would order it a second time.
The sausage, jalapeo cornbread and beans on the other hand are fairly good. I wouldn??t kick them out of my dinner plate, that??s for sure. The innate problem with cooking barbeque in Houston is the same as that with Tex-Mex ?? there are simply a plethora of awesome, cheap and lovable places. So if you are going to do it, you best do it right?or you can just buy some prime real estate on Kirby Dr. and let it do the talking.

As a native Houstonian that now lives in Austin I always make Goode Co. a part of my trip while in town.

I used to watch Pappy (RIP) in the parking lot years ago and Goode Co. is just home. I like the other ventures but Kirby is the only one I go to.

I usually always get the same thing: jalapeno sausage, smoked turkey, sauce on the side, double Jambalaya Texana rice with 2 Jalapeno bread and a cold Lone Star. The stuffed potato is great, the ribs and brisket are good but I just like what I like. That sauce is killer.

Myself and others in Austin will get together if one of us brings some back. There is usually no talking involved; just eating and smiling.

I never liked pecan pie until I had one from Goode Co. Simply the best I have ever had. Ever. If you have never been you are cheating yourself out of a great meal. I can't think of one BBQ place in town that comes close.

Oh, and the lemonade is really good too for the kiddos.

Goode Company is a great barbeque restaurant. They have good sauce. Also love the potato salad. It is one of our office's favorite lunch spots. It does get crowded!

Great location. Lots of outdoor seating to melt the northerners in the summer. The roasted duck is to die for. Brisket is done very well and not overcooked, juicy and delicious. The jalapeno bread goes well with the plates. Potato salad is pretty good. Nice plate of goode co. bbq and a cold beer is a great meal any day of the week.

Well, reading reviews on City Search of barbeque places, is very up and down; kinda' like riding a roller coaster. One reader gives a place a shining five stars, while the very next reviewer gives the same place a one star. And I'm not talking about Goode Co., just barbeque reviews in general, on City Search. I've tried quite a few of the barbeque places in Houston over the years, and Goode Co. is one of the better places. Plus I happen to like their Kirby location. It's close to Rice Village, close to Downtown, and convenient to West U. and Bellaire. The people working here are friendly, the service is good, and they serve remarkably consistent BBQ ribs, chicken and sausage. I especially like their turkey sausage and their pork ribs. Unless I'm in the mood to buy mesquite wood and make barbeque myself in the back yard, this place is the next best thing. ....Nice, mild smoke flavor, and friendly service.
If you want the die-hard, strong-kicking mesquite smoke flavor that's second to none.......................well then you'd have to come by my house on a Sunday afternoon, when I have the barbeque grill going.

i don't know to what level of high cusine you might choose to elevate your idea of bar-b-q to. but this place on kirby has been there and serving it up to rave reviews for as long as i can remember. although over the years they've expended into other areas of the restaurant business, they've kept it unchanged - basic and simple - here. you get a choice of your basic meats - links, chicken, beef, pork (turkey in the fall) and sides. dirty rice, potatoe salad, cole slaw, etc. bottled beer on ice is available out of an old 1950's ice house style cooler. indoor seating can be hard to find at peak hours, and the service line may seem rediculously long, but they actually move you through very quickly and eating outdoors is fine even on the hottest Houston day. prices are reasonable and the food is great. very adaquate parking. it's a friendly, great place that almost anyone from houston knows about and likes.

The service was good but the facility was dirty and seating inside was limited. The brisket sandwich was served on an excellent roll, the meat had a great flavor but the portion was disappointing (I spill more meat when I'm making a sandwich!). We were forced to eat outside and battle the pigeons. ISo, we decided to load up chunks of the roll with Tabasco Sauce and fed it to the pigeons. It discouraged their begging to a point that we could finish our lightweight sandwiches. This experience would have been worth it if there was three times the amount of meat that Iwe received on our sandwiches.

Pros: Barbeque had good flavor

Cons: Not enough meat unless you can catch a pigeon

The food is great but the environment leaves a lot to be desired, mostly because the indoors is very small and crowded and the outdoors is very hot during the summer. However, there is another location on I-10 west of the 610 loop (8911 Katy Freeway) which has an INCREDIBLE environment and a lot of seating. I recommend that location. The building is also very cool, it comes across like a mix between a classy riverboat and a western saloon, with a two-story dining area. The brisket and sausage are my favorites, the meat is tender and has great smoked flavor. The bbq baked potato is fantastic, albeit a bit small, and the potato salad is the best I've ever had. Altogether the best BBQ around, which is saying something in Houston. I would rather eat there than just about anywhere. The jalapeno bread is good, too. Add an ice cold Shiner Bock beer and you've got a taste of heaven.

Pros: Great Food, cool crowd

Cons: Crowded, try Spring Branch location

I have visited Goode at least three times while visiting Houston and I have been dissapointed each time. There are alot of different meats to select from, but the side selection leaves a lot to be desired. Coleslaw, mac salad and beans and that is about it. The big dissapointment is how dry the meat is. I tried different meats at each visit and they were always dried out. Also don't eat outside unless you like to be attacked by pigeons. They are all over the place. I will try a different BBQ joint on my next trip to Houston.

Pros: Nice cold beer.

The only thing I like here is their jalapeno bread.

Definitely over priced & over hyped. Very disappointed with the bbq sauce (actually has a weird after taste), and just the food in general.

This place is so overrated and overpriced! We went because of the hype, thats the best thing there. They don't give you plate bigger than a kids meals and it will cost you your first born! Don't give your money away! I have had $3 street corner bbq better than this place!

It's the best. I like ribs without sauce, so the meat has to be great and juicy alone. They slow smoke everything which makes it very tasty. They also have the best pecan pie and potato salad I have eaten in a restaurant. Try it. But beware there is usually a line, like all good restaurants in houston.

Goode Co. has some great BBQ! I live in Austin where BBQ is plentiful so I know my BBQ. Whenever I go back home to Houston I always make a trip out to Goode Co. BBQ because their food is just that great! I have never been disappointed with anything that I've ordered on the menu. The bottom line: their bbq is scrumptious, and I can feel my mouth beginning to water for some now.

The brisket and sausage were okay, but the sauce is nothing memorable and you don't get much for your money. Potato salad and beans were also very average. Only the homemade pecan pie saved this trip - excellent.

You're served on a lunch line, sit outside, and refill your own drink. From what they lack in service they do not make up in food quality. The meat is great, and the process in which they make it is reason. But the BBQ sauce is just not that good. Too sweet. The baked beans leave something to be desired. And the bread is decent for anyone who likes jalapenos. Worth a visit, but this can't be the best Houston has to offer.

Easily the best barbeque in Houston with tons of locations, Goode company is a Texas institution. What makes this place so good is their excellent sauce and variety of meats like turkey, duck, etc. The ribs are amazing, the brisket succulent and the cafeteria style service very quick. Do not go at peak hours though, the place gets too crowded. I highly recommend this place if you want great barbecue.

So you want to know just how good GOODE is? It is great! BBQ casual style... this isn't a fancy joint but BBQ isn't a fancy meal. The staff will give you WHATEVER cut of meat you request, lean or "flavorful". They'll even customize the portions. Those of you that don't fill up at Goode should reconsider your diet....
The lines move quickly; good food = lines. THE SAUCE is absolutely the best part... it is spicy yet slightly sweet and served warm. I can't get enough (3 bowls usually.) Any 'native' Texan to tell you the BBQ sauce stinks or 'renders the meat inedible' has no clue what fine Texas BBQ is! As for the price, I have yet to find (lifelong houstonian) a BBQ joint for less.
For those who want to 'Slap someone around' let's taste some of your cookin' and then we'll arrange something....

There are not many BBQ establishments that have a caferteria style line like Goode Co.
Others are far off from the eye that you can't see what the help is doing. So for the plates served the meat is as Jim puts it " Is served -up nothing but the best" and its slow cooked. Yes from time to time you may have to stand in line, just like you would have to at any higher $$$$ resturant. Remember there are reservations here. And I haven't been to BBQ place that wasn't cheap either. And there are only two places I go to with my family in this Huge City when I'm not cooking (BBQ). and Jim's place is one that I not only recommend but I meet alot of my friends their too. In closing this is for ALL the negative eassys. Jim's team trys hard very day.

Do not believe the hype about Goode Company Barbecue. I am truly astonished by all of the positive reviews here & the long lines there (which is probably why I went there & kept trying to like it). The meat is okay - the prices are a bit high & the consistency varies. The meat can be a bit tough & somewhat dry.

The "barbecue sauce" renders the meat inedible - it's a weird tomato-ey concoction that tastes more like a bad marinara than a barbecue sauce. Truly horrid. I've had far better barbecue sauce at national chains. That's just sad.

If you insist on trying this place, order the sauce on the side so you can judge the meat & sauce separately.

As a native Houstonian let me tell you that Goode is not Goode. I have tried over the years to give the benfit of the doubt, but consistently have been disappointed. Tasteless beef, inferior sauce, average service and a commercialized attempt to make you feel at home in this reproduction barn! Give us all a break! They proabably use pressure cookers to produce the BBQ and add liquid smoke for that goode ol' flavor!
In a word "YUK"

Anyone who thinks this place is good obviously know nothing about real Texas barbeque. Meats are dry, sauces taste bottled. People are nice but food quality is poor. The meats are so mass produced, you don't taste the "love" that goes into authentic Texas style BBQ. My last visit 1 year ago was an invite to a party. I will never go back again, not even for a free meal. Swinging door in Rosenberg and Thelma's in the on Live Oak are much better bets.

Well, this is not authentic Texas BBQ, it's someone's weak interpretation. The BBQ is spicy, which may confuse those who think Texas is all about spice. My main problem is they put APPLES in their beans....sorry, no apples in anything except apple pie in Texas.

The Best says it all. I have tried them all and this is it. A two women told me about Goode Co. on a return flight from Las Vegas. Very good top of the line in BBQ. When you go, you got to try the best pecan pie in this world. I don't think they make it there because the consitancy is 100% but it is worth every bite. For to go orders, get the sauce on the side. It comes in a nice container that you can use for other stuff later.

Cons: Crowede Parking

.

I've tried this many times and I've still never been impressed. What is with the watered down sauce and bland meat?! This may be good compared to northern barbeque places but can't even rank here where there are so many that are so much better.

Just goes to show how diluted Houston has become, mass produced bbq is now considered the "best" we can do. How places like Luther's can even MAKE the top ten is beyond me, that's NOT bbq, it's meat with sauce slapped on it. How can not a single bar b que in the wards NOT make the top ten? You folks need a serious lesson in "Q"
I have no quibble with Goode Co. They make decent Q.

Best BBQ in town. Best decor, Best side dishes, best...best... best.... Try the Chicken Dinner with Austin beans and Jambalaya. Great. I wish the place was a little cheaper. But, the food is great. Take out of towners there to see some real TX BBQ.

While Otto's barbeque tastes better, Good Company's portions are superior, as is their service (and location). Keep on smoking!

This is it!! Reeeeeal TEXAS Barbeque!! Backyard Taste of Texas without having to do it yourself. Folks that don't know real BBQ might not appreciate the lack of "commercial taste". The beans, sauce, and rice dressing are a dynamic complement to an outstanding selection of the finest hickory/mesquite smoked meats anywhere. Goode and Company is one of the reasons TEXAS is the BBQ capitol of the country. The Kirby/Hwy 59 location is always fresh, always ready, always THE BEST!! Sorry Kansas City; but, I've had yours. The score: Goode 10--Kansas City 4!! If Luther's, Kansas City, or any of the others tried Goode BBQ, they would switch to TexMex...

Pros: Slow smoked flavor, Favorably priced, TX flavor/TX Pride!!

Cons: Not enough locations, Can't be copied!!, Only 1 number 1!

Goode company is by far the best barbecue you will ever have. Its smoky flavored, dry (but not too dry) and lean, and their sauce is an excellent addition to it as it is spicy and lightly sweet. Nowhere else will you find such consistently good food! Their pecan pies are pretty good too!

Having catered barbeque in Houston during my high school and college years, I believe I'm more than qualified to render an objective opinion on Goode Company Barbeque. It's an excellent example of institutional, overpriced, undercooked barbeque. Having eaten there on only one occasion, that was enough for me. Not enough parking and the establishment is frequented by the West U/Bellaire "Yuppie" crowd. In closing, there are alot of other "real" barbeque joints I'd rather spend my food dollar at.

The most over rated bbq restaurant in Houston. Fat meat and the sauce tastes bottled. Lulig City and Heights BBQ are both better bets.

BBQ with a Goode name, but with bad taste. You can read the newspaper through the very thin and tastless sauce. While the restaurant is comfortable enough and contains just enough "Texas" accents to fool some into believing the BBQ is the real deal, there are some things that aren't quite right. First, your choice of meat is carefully weighed and anything ever so slightly over estimated by the server is quickly thrown back. I understand portion control, but, BBQ should't be weighed. The perfect sliced beef sandwich is not 4 oz. It is more of a look and feel than a measurement. In here, you must lift the top bun to verify there is actually meat in there. The assortment of side dishes is varied and presented just like the text book would say, but again they are of the quality of the sauce.

I can't believe all the good reviews for this establishment. Clearly, most reviewers don't have any taste buds. I visited Goode Company on I-10 once and thought the brisket was dry and not very flavorful. I think I would have been happier eating a McDonald's McRib! This is not what good BBQ should taste like. How do people keep going back!?? Perhaps I visited them on a bad day. If you want good BBQ then I suggest visiting the only place I have been pleased with in my quest to find truly wonderful BBQ and that is Luling City Market on Richmond, right by 610. You won't be sorry!!

Message from Goode Company BBQ

The little BBQ barn that started it all, and a true Texas gem tucked right off Kirby Drive. Cozy interiors, shaded picnic tables, and mesquite-smoked aromatics since ’77.
