I was in a desperate state when I called Martin and Shelly Bell. I read their website thoroughly and knew Shelmar would be my only hope. \r
If they could help me be a strong leader and teach my 1yr. old English Bulldog, King how to behave

We have been boarding our two German Shorthair Pointers with Shelmar for over four years. We drive from Friendswood to Katy to board our dogs there for extended periods 3-4 times per year.It is the only facility that our very active dogs are given the opportunity to exercise outside on a regular basis. The care they receive is second to none.We have no worries when we leave our dogs with Martin and Shelly. In addition, we left our dogs with Shelmar for 6 weeks of obedience training. We were extremely pleased with the training results. The dogs perform reliably without being cowed or fearful. We frequently get compliments from friends and guests at our home about how well mannered our dogs are - it is a direct result of their time at Shelmar. An added benefit of boarding our dogs at Shelmar is that their training is reinforced each time they visit. We wouldn't board them anywhere else!

Six years ago, after much research into dog training facilities, we began our relationship with Martin and Shelly when we took our 6 month old German Shorthaired Pointer, Riker, to Shelmar Kennels. As my husband is an avid bird hunter, he was to begin not only behavior training, but bird hunting training as well. He was there for four months.
As a mom, I was worried about him being gone for so long, but on our first visitation, my concerns were completely erased. We got out of the car, to see Martin working him in the field, letting him show off all he had learned. When he finished, Riker came over to us, and what I saw was a truly happy dog. In just a month he was already working the field and had his basic training down pat.
Martin showed us how to talk to him, how to give commands and walked us through the process. When our visit was over, we were actually excited to leave Riker there, knowing how much more he was going to learn.
When his training was over, my husband went alone to Shelmar, because Martin was going to show him how to command the dog out in the field. Martin spent an hour working with my husband and Riker making sure he was completely confident in all aspects of the training.
We could not have been more pleased with the results of his training.
Since the initial training, we have sent him back every summer for a little refresher course. We call it his summer camp. He actually knows the way there. When we are about 2 miles away, he gets really excited in the car. He knows he gets to have fun and do what he is trained to do.
Whenever I pick him up, Shelly always takes the time to tell me what all they did with him and even tell me which dogs he had the most fun with.
After seeing Riker's progress, our daughter, who had rescued an English Springer Spaniel, decided to send her dog, Pippie, for behavioral training. She knew nothing about Pippie's previous circumstances, but Pippie had some rather serious behavior issues. It was all but impossible to get her into her crate, she was bolt at the sight of an open door, to the point of knocking you down or hurting herself on the process and she was not well socialized among other dogs.
Pippie stayed at Shelmar for two months. My daughter was also going to see if she could be trained for hunting as well. Shelly worked on the behavior problems first. I went with my daughter for the visit and she was already following commands and the best thing was that she was no longer afraid of her crate. At that time, Shelly informed us that they had assessed Pippie and she would not be a good candidate for hunting training. Apparently, someone had attempted to train her before and had not done it correctly and subsequently left her with an aversion to the birds. She told us, they could continue to try, but it was unlikely to be successful and she didn't want us to waste our money. Although we were disappointed, we truly appreciated Shelly's honest assessment.
When Pippie returned home, she was a much better behaved dog. She now gets along better with other dogs, and she loves her crate. we only have to point and she walks right in. Sometimes she puts herself in the crate.
My daughter continues to board with Shelmar Kennels as do we. We are completely confident in the care that our dogs receive there. When we go out of town, and need to board the dogs, I may be worried about some things, but my dog is not one of them. I know he is having his own little vacation, and is safe and happy.

Thanks again, Martin and Shelly

We live in the Copper Village Area of Houston. We were in need of a place to kennel our boxer about 3 years ago when we found Shelmar. We have been absolutely thrilled with this completely safe fenced in huge facility. Our pup not only gets wonderful care but great direction and leadership as well. She eats well and comes home happy and healthy. We have left her for as few as 2 days to as many as 7 with fabulous results each and every time.

Please consider Shelmar if you adore your pets as much as we do. You will be thrilled!!

Shelmar Kennels To The Rescue

We were at our wits end.
We had an aggressive ??rescue dog? that nobody could (or wanted to) handle?nobody except Martin and Shelly.
After a few weeks of training at Shelmar,
my wife and I had our own training session.
Martin taught us how to work with our dog and give him the opportunity to be a ??solid citizen.?
We now have a happy and well adjusted dog. When we go on vacation or out of town, we sleep well knowing he is in good hands at Shelmar. I also want to mention that every time we drive through the gate, my wife and I comment to each other about how clean and fresh the place is. Thank you Shelly and Martin. I am a true fan. I origionally posted this review on citysearch but after seeing the negative review and Shelly's response I felt the need to repost it here as well.

My fiance and I first brought our 1.5 year old Boston Terrier to Shelmar in July of 2010. We had rescued our pup from a neglectful owner and at around 8 months he had started showing signs of aggression towards strangers. In December of 2009 it had reached its breaking point when he attacked his vet. At the vet's suggestion we took Rudy to an overpriced unhelpful behavioralist in Sugar Land. By the summer of 2010, after seeing little progress, we took Rudy to Shelmar where he stayed for four weeks to work with Shelly.

It was a tough four weeks, Rudy had never been away from us for more than week and I didn't know if I had done the right thing. When we came to pick up Rudy in August, I almost cried when I saw Shelly take Rudy right up to a stranger who leaned down and pet Rudy. It was amazing.

Since then it has been a lot of hard work on our end. Shelly will always be upfront with us, and the reality was that we needed to change some of our habits to be better dog owners for Rudy. We are still working with Rudy, but now we can take him to our friends' houses, to PetSmart and other places that were off limits in the best. The biggest thing was that last week we took him to the vet and we left without a single growl or incident. It was amazing to see all this hardwork pay off.

My only regret is that I did not find Shelmar earlier. Rudy is 100% better and living an amazing and calm life because of the work Shelly and Martin have done. We are so happy with Shelmar, that anytime we have to board him we drive the 45 minutes so he can board there. This summer when we leave for a month to get married and go on our honeymoon, he will be at Shelmar. I used to be that owner that worried about my pet when he boarded at a kennel, I don't ever worrry about him at Shelmar. I'm totally confused about the last review because I have never seen Rudy treated with anything but the utmost care, he loves Shelly and Martin and loves their house because he gets to run, play and swim all day long. He also gets to board with them in their home, so I know he is getting cared for around the clock!

We dedicate our lives to our business, the dogs in our care and our clients.
The review dated 12/31/10 was posted by a former client of Shelmar Kennels. After boarding with us for 3+years they now have determined that we are unfit to house their dog or care for any others? This woman sent her teenage daughter to deliver their dog, Marshall, for boarding. She was given a 3 hour window to do so, 8-11am. At 11:05am I left the kennel with no word from the Riersgards that they still intended to board Marshall with us. I returned to the kennel to find 3 messages demanding that I open the gate for the daughter to deliver Marshall. The messages indicated that the daughter was running late. I do not consider that she was running late given that she had a 3 hour window to appear.I emailed her mother that they would need to drop Marshall during the next opportunity, 4:30-6pm. At approximately 5pm the daughter arrived with Marshall and an attitude, obviously because I was not here for her earlier. She demanded that she see where Marshall was housed during his stay, grilled me as to his exercise schedule. Marshall at this point had boarded with us between 4 and 6 times per year with a 1 month stay in the summer and I had never recieved this type of treatment from any Riersgard family member. I told her that the dogs are kept in our home and I do not take people on tours of our home. She continued with the attitude, but left the dog for boarding anyway. I did tell her that there were other boarding facilities that may make them happier. She said we were the experts and that she trusted us. She exited our office with a flippant attitude, left our facility only to return minutes later to collect Marshall. I emailed Marianne Riersgard to let her know that Marshall would no longer be boarded at our facility, which is the reason for her email and others posted by her and her daughter.
We have boarded Marshall numerous times over the years and each time he arrived he was nervous until we incorporated him with a group of dogs for exercise which helped him relax. He may have left our facility with a bit of mud on his coat from outside play but the owner makes it sound as if he was covered in filth. I am not sure why it took so many years for the Riersgards to decide that their dog was handled so poorly, but if this review is the result of a teenagers rant that is sad. We have helped many dogs and owners in dire situations, many times we are the last resort before a decision needs to be made to place a dog elsewhere. We take our livelihood very seriously and are proud of the care we give to our furry friends. And they are my friends. Shelly Bell

Be careful with this Kennel. They promise wonderful care, but do not deliver. Ask to see the facility your dog will be kept in. They will refuse. What kennel does not allow you to see the place your beloved pet will be staying whilst you are away? A defensive, rude, and unprofessional attitude when asked basic questions about the facility did not help. They are also a training kennel, yet our well mannered and obedient dog completely ignored and ran away from the "trainer". In addition, he has come back filthy and in a thoroughly soiled cage. We were told if the dog didn't fit their regime, we should not send him there, as individualised care was not part of the price. You should feel complete confidence and peace of mind regarding your kennel. Hope this has helped slim down choices.

Shelmar kennels takes great care of the dogs in their care, they are excellent trainers and are able to teach you the owner how to do it too!
Located in Katy Texas, on a stunning 20 acre Ranch with a huge lake the property is all eight foot high fenced for peace of mind and dog safety.
Martin and Shelly will amaze you, they effortlessly control their dogs, create confidence in the owner and easily explain how to control and handle your dog. My dog is a graduate of Shelmar Kennels and I get comments all the time in Memorial Park about how well he behaves and everyone I speak to wants a dog like him that does not pull on the leash and sits quietly and calmly when Im chatting - belive me when I say he didnt start like that. We rescued Max from a shelter, within 2 weeks we were going to give him up but my wife convinced me to visit Martin and Shelly Bell at Shelmar Kennels. We now have the dog our family has always wanted. Now if I can just convince my wife that our children should spend 4 weeks at Shelmar!
Great job guys - Thank you so much...

Cons: none

Shelmar Kennels trained my lab Judd. Martin got him swimming and fetching the ball to hand. He is a real pleasure to hang out with now. We referred our friends there and they too had a great experience with Shelmar. These guys have the ability and the facility - I cant say enough good things about them. We visited several other kennels before commiting to Shelmar - we are so glad we chose Martin and Shelly of Shelmar Kennels. We gave them a dog that was unruly and could not be walked by either my wife or me as he pulled on the lead until he choked himself. Martin and Shelly gave us back a dog in 4 weeks that even my 12 year old daughter was handling during the pick up training lesson, Judd retrieved the ball to her and behaved like a good dog should by heeling, sitting and staying when told. Thanks Guys! Ryan, Lisa, Maria and Judd.

Martin and Shelly Bell trained my Dog Sammi, wow! what a difference. I dont know how they do it but Sammi even listens to me. She has been having such a great time playing with the dogs in our neighborhood, coming when she is called and has really become a family member instead of a loner like she used to be. We liked so much about Sammi, a 3 year old lab mix rescue, that we decided to invest the money into training her. What Martin and Shelly gave us back is a dog with a zest for life and the manners to back it up so much so that now - we dont leave home without her! Last night was Sammi's first soccer game, watching our son Miles. She had a blast, made friends with everyone and sat for over and hour without complaint or whining. We love Sammi - and we love Martin and Shelly Bell of Shelmar Kennels. Michelle ;-)))

Shelmar Kennels is a first class training facility. Martin is "The Dog Whisperer". When my dog came to Martin, he would not sit, stay or come to me when called. My dog would run away from me and I would have to chase it. After Martin's course my dog is now a perfect angel. I now own a pleasant, obiedient, happy dog. Thanks Martin for all your hard work. You are first class and professional. Thanks for taking such good care of Gipper for me.

Let me start out by saying that Shelmar Kennels is a WONDERFUL training facility. I took our dog Lexi to them a few weeks ago, with different issues. I picked her up the other day, and she was like a whole new dog. She has been so much fun, and does not have any anger issues like she did before, Lexi listens better, she sits, lays and crawls. She has been diving in our pool with our son. I can't say enough good things about Shelly and Martin.

I also did my homework when looking for a kennel. Yes, I read all of the reviews that people wrote on this site. The good, the bad. To me, the good reviews definitely ruled over the bad. You are always going to have people complaining about something. You need to meet them first and form you're own opinion, not the opinion of someone else. Shelly was very informative when I went to pick up Lexi.

One last thing, Shelly and Martin give their entire lives to these dogs. Most people go to work 8-5 and their job is done for the day. Not Shelly and Martin, their job is round the clock. So don't pass judgment unless you are in their situation. To that end.....I highly recommend Shelmar Kennels. Thank you Shelly and Martin for doing such a great job with Lexi, I am very impressed.

I love Shelmar. My owners took me here for training after adopting me from CAPS a few years ago....of course, they needed some training too. :) If you are taking your dog here for the "pampered pet" experience - don't bother. There is no wi-fi, hdtv or comfee chairs...but I don't mind. This is a dog kennel and excellent dog training facility. Martin and Shelly truly care about me and the other animals in their care. But Martin also had high expectations of my owners to follow through on my training. I love going on vacation here. I try to arrive early in the morning to join in with an exercise group - a dog's got to keep his figure even when on holiday! I enjoy being outside in the fresh air and it is rather peaceful out there in the country. I cannot wait to go back and visit my friends! Bingo

In early 2009, my wife and I decided to buy a dog for our kids, all 6 years of age and under. We decided to buy a German Shorthaired Pointer, mainly because I knew that the dog would become mine after the newness ran out for the kids. After getting our new pup, my wife and I were somewhat surprised with the amount of energy the dog had. Like all pups he chewed on anything he could get his mouth on, including our kids. We (especially my wife) were ready to get rid of the dog.

After some thought, we decided that the pup needed a more suitable outlet for his breed that would require professional training. After a long search, I emailed Shelmar to get more information on their programs. They promptly responded to my email and I made an appointment to see their operation that same weekend. During my visit, Martin spent over 45 minutes with me talking about his program and demonstrating the results he has achieved with two of his students. I was impressed not only with his dog behavior knowledge, but also with his results. Equally as impressive was the facility, built for dog training in my opinion. I stopped searching after that first visit.

Happily, we enrolled our GSP in Shelmar's 4 month gun dog program and WOW...what results! Our dog is not only a great hunter but also a great family dog. My wife could not believe the transformation...he left our home an unruly pup and returned a well behaved softie that our kids are no longer afraid to play with.

We cannot say enough good things about the Bells. They did great with our dog and would recommend them in a heartbeat not only for training, but for boarding as well. Shelmar is the first place we think of when we have to travel and will certainly return for further training.

Pros: Great dog trainers, responsive to owners concerns

I recently adopted a puppy from the SPCA. It was immediately evident that she was going to be a challenge for me to train by myself. After speaking with numerous trainers in the Houston area, even some recommended by my vet, I stumbled upon Shelmar's website. I called and left a voicemail and received a call back within a couple of hours. At 7:30 at night, Shelly spent over a half hour on the phone with me helping me regain my sanity before we were even committed to training with them. That is great customer service in my book! My puppy went through the three week training session with them, and I've seen a tremendous difference in her. Martin spent a great deal of time with me and my family over two visits and several hours answering all of our questions and advising us how to deal with her challenging behaviors. In addition, my puppy loves going there. I recently dropped her off to board for a few days and she was so excited she ran for Shelly....never even looked back! Needless to say, we love Shelmar and I can't imagine taking my pup anywhere else.

Tried calling them for a week. They responded following week. They have a nice establisment. Owner greeted us and seems nice, but had to apologised as she is busy and can't spent too much time with us as she had to help the other guy with training. You can make an appointment to visit their place, and upon reaching there, you will be told that you can't inspect the kennels. We were told that the kennels are inside their home, so you can't enter. They have about 40-60 dogs in their home. The home seems very quiet from outside. That's good. They have a another outdoor kenneling area close to the house. Disappointed that we can't inspect the kennels in their house. Will never know the living conditions. The play areas are about 15 by 10 feet. They said they will have a group of 3-4 dogs at a time in the play pen. No grass in the play pen, only sand. The dogs get to go out 4 times a day for 45 mins at a time. If the weather is fine, maybe 1.5hrs. Read good reviews about them, especially with training, many repeat clients. OVerall feeling - undecided about the place. Don't know how the inside of the house look like, whether the 40 dogs are living comfortably or if they are even there. It seemed quiet from outside. Owner explained that they get tired playing the pen and usually sleeps. They keep a strict schedule.

Hello Shelly and Martin,

Boy, am I having a blast with this dog you guys trained. She is doing wonderful. I can't be more pleased with her turn out. She has adjusted very well back into the "home" environment, yet knows when to snap to it and do what she loves to do. I hope my words truly express my gratitude for both of your efforts.

Best regards,
Mike Weaver and Family

Today, we have had a fabulous day. We had a great time with you at the Kennels, and then we went to the park on Porter Road and had the best experience with Chase off leash, we ended the experience with some positive ball throws. What a treat for us! This is exactly what we were wanting in our pup! Again, thank you so very much.

Warmest Regards,
Patty & Gary Lamb

My experience with Shelmar Kennels was extremely positive! My dog, Cody, was 11 months when I first got him and he had already been in 2 other homes. He had separation anxiety when I got him, he was extremely anxious, would cry (scream) if I put him in his kennel or if I would leave the house. He would not listen to us at ALL! He would run away from me, get in the trash and jump/nip at people. He would also have accidents in the house regularly. I was getting very frustrated with the little guy to say the least!!!

He is SOOOO great now!!! He comes when we call him, sits when we ask him to, stays still so we can put his leash on him, goes into his kennel as soon as we say, ?kennel.? Honestly, every issue we had with him has been cured. He has not had a single accident in the house. And he doesn?t CRY when we put him in his kennel or if we leave the house!! That is the best part. He just seems like a happier dog! It was definitely a good investment! I don?t know HOW they did it?but it worked!!!

Martin and Shelly - thank you so much! Dede is a different dog to live with, she has no separation anxiety issues anymore, she responds well to me when I give her commands and she will even stay and sleep on her bed now. The difference is truly amazing - and you were exactly right when you told me its easier and much more fun to live with a well behaved dog! Best of all - she is still my baby girl! The training affected none of her personality and the things we always loved about her. Dede is so happy, we are so happy. Love Linda and Dede

After spending thousands of dollars on having our dog trained at another training facility - with little success - we were lucky to find Martin and Shelly Bell of Shelmar Kennels. Martin tells it the way it is, I'm sure he offends some people as he is direct and to the point, and wont let owners make excuses - but the end result is a very well behaved dog one that my wife and I thought we were going to have to give up for adoption. It sure beats spending thousands at another facility who were very nice but had no idea how to fix Gyro's problems. These guys are committed to the dogs full time, its all they do and all they think about. Martin amazed us with the progress Gyro made in 4 weeks. Martin has a way of connecting with dogs and educating owners. Our owner training session was intense, the information Martin shares and the techniques to keep your dog trained are freely given, Martin asks only that you pay attention and work hard. After all the effort Martin and Shelly put into our dog we just wanted to say Thanks Guys - Great Job! Ronnie, Sandra and Gyro

Our rotty pup started displaying agression issues, so we contacted Shelmar kennels. Bo has been home for 2 months now and we have not had another issue. His obedience training is top of the class! He plays well with our family and Martin taught us how to think like him, how to correct unwanted behaviour and even how to pet and talk to him properly!
I can't praise them highly enough or thank them too much for saving our dog from a short life and giving us the knowledge to keep it going.

The training that Shelmar Kennels did with our Brittany Sara is excellent. Sara used to run away, jump up on everyone, dig up the back yard and walking her on the lead was impossible. In six weeks Martin turned her life around. She now comes when she is called, walks to heel on and off the lead, no longer jumps on our kids or guests coming to our house and is turning into a great member of our household. Not only did they train the dog but also my wife and I. Martin also spent time teaching our ten year old how to walk Sara, something that Zach enjoyed very much. Martin put us in control of our dog, making her pleasant to live with. Martin and Shelly - A HUGE THANKS - from Bobby, Rebecca, Zach and Sara.

Martin Bell and his wife Shelly are very talented dog trainers. I took them my 10 month old Golden Retriever "Rigby" as he was becoming aggressive with both dogs and small children. Martin has a great knack for teaching dogs and people, I have been able to continue training with Rigby and have recieved tremendous support from Martin anytime I needed it.

I read the other post and I want to say in all my time spent at Shelmar, I heard nothing but great reports from all his clients that I met there. Martin will not BS you. He tells it the way he sees it and explains why dogs behave the way they do. Im sure that offends certain types of people, but for me - he saved Rigbys life. He would not let me make excuses (as at the time I was pretty much in denial about Rigbys problems) as making excuses stopped me from dealing with the issues I was having - together we accomplished what I only dreamed was possible with Rigby.
Martin and Shelly have a great facility, 20 acres inside of an 8 foot high fence, a beautiful training pavillion and big excercise runs for the dogs. When it comes to dogs they are dedicated, working long hours every day, 7 days a week. Rigby loves going back to Shelmar, going down their road he is so excited as he cannot wait to see Martin and Shelly and play with the other dogs. Without doubt 5 stars for Training and boarding.

I'm very sad reading a couple of poorly written and negative reviews here, and even wonder if they are genuine. I myself regularly use Shelmar kennels for training and boarding our current 4 dogs. For the last 5 years we have had nothing but rewarding and positive experiences, whether that's leaving our dogs while we take our winter break or to train our new puppies. Our dogs love Shelmar, and this shows when they get out of our car and see Martin, It's pure excitement. Martin will always spend time with us to show us how he trains them, for us to use at home.

Martin is also the 2008 National Cocker Championship winner in Montana, and when we see him next will congratulate. - Well done Martin!

As for the training itself someone here mentioned that he 'slaps the dogs across the face' - what a load of garbage! I personally have been there whilst he trains and in no case has he ever done this, in-fact he is against using force on any animal unlike other trainers I have seen. He respects his dogs, and he treats our dogs like his own. I feel safe knowing that our dogs are in good hands when we leave them with him.

One thing to remember is that if Shelmar is fully booked it's for a reason! I would advise booking in advance and not expecting to get your dog in the same day!, If they were not good at what they do they would be empty and out of business, certainly not fully booked and winning National championships!

My advise is to go see Martin and Shelly for yourselves, make an appointment and see the facilities for yourselves!

This posting is a warning to anyone considering leaving an animal at Shelmar Kennels. It describes my deplorable treatment by Martin Bell, the owner of Shelmar Kennels.

I left my dog at Shelmar Kennels in August 2008 for obedience training and rehabilitation from dog-aggression issues. The cost of this four-week training was $1,200. Two days later, I emailed Mr. Bell to ask a few follow-up questions regarding the methods he uses to correct a dog?s behavior. He called me and reprimanded me for not having asked the questions while I was there, insinuated that I was one of those ?crazy dog park women,? and suggested that I come get my dog because he didn?t want to deal with me. He also told me that he had shown me the correction method he uses, which involves a choke collar and leash. I learned later, when I picked up the dog, that a second correction he used that he didn?t tell me about was slapping the dog across the face with force. Despite Mr. Bell?s confrontational attitude, I declined to pick up my dog because I was in desperate need of help for my pet. The phone call ended with me feeling that I had to grovel for Mr. Bell to keep the animal and train it.

When the dog was ready to come home, Mr. Bell spent three poorly used hours instructing me on how to work with the dog when I brought him home. During this time, Mr. Bell was insulting, condescending, and overbearing. He told me to ?not say another word? because he didn?t want to hear what I had to say. He also said ?you?re just making excuses ? you really don?t want to do this? as well as ?I showed you how to do this and you?ve tried it two times already. You get one more chance to do it right.? His overall demeanor was one of superiority and contempt.

He clearly didn?t care at all about providing any kind of customer service. He told me outright that my opinion of him didn?t matter. His abusive behavior was completely unacceptable of anyone who is offering a service.

We have been taking our dogs to Shelmar Kennels to board for the past three years. My husband and I travel for work a lot, our dogs spend every third week in boarding, they are equally as happy at Shelmar or at home, we call it their 'country residence'!! We have used several kennels in the past but the care and attention given to our pets is evident in their demeanour when they see Martin and Shelly.Martin and Shelly own and run the kennel, so you know who will be looking after your dog when you get there. We get onto their road and our dogs get sooooo excited.

I was looking for a nice place to board our dog for a couple of days and Shelmar looked reputable. I was unable to reach them by phone for three days and left messages for them to call me but they never returned my calls. My family and I gave them the benefit of the doubt and drove 15 miles to look at the place and get some questions answered. A guy came out and asked me "who sent me", I told him I sent myself because they wouldn't return there calls and I was trying to give them my business. He told me they were booked until Christmas 2008, before that I had already decided we wouldn't be taking our dog there and would let everyone not to either. Very rude, save your time and money by going somewhere else for dog boarding and training!!!!!
