I recently moved to the Falls Church area and today was my second visit at Suburban Animal Hospital. Both times, I've been here for non-life threatening emergencies. And both times, the experience was very pleasant and affordable.

I found this place by chance and got lucky. I was looking for a emergency 24-hour hospital for my dog, who had just injured himself in a very delicate place. Somehow, the signs confused me and I ended up at Suburban Animal Hospital. They were so helpful and saved me a ton of $$$$. If I had ended up at the 24 hour care hospital, my charges would have been around $850. I paid around $250, had my dog checked, treated and received medication for him.

Today, I went back b/c of my initial positive experience. My dog's nail had broken off at the root but not completely, so it had to be removed. The Doctor was so sweet and answered all my questions, after Samson went to the other room for treatment. He was back within 10 minutes or so, He was bandaged and ready to go. I had to get some anti-biotics for him, b/c the area seemed a bit swollen and could be infected.

The whole visit was 35 minutes and I didn't have an appointment. There were other pets there with appointments but the receptionist was helpful and got me to see a vet between appointments within 15 minutes of us being there.

And once more, I got away with a $250 bill. It's not pocket change, but I'm definitely sure that it would have cost me more somewhere else.

Thank you Dr. Schrader & Staff for the great care for Samson!

I've had pets all of my life and realize that vets and veterinary service is expensive. This place takes it to a whole new level. My cat required emergency surgery. I accepted the "estimate" over the phone from the vet and authorized surgery. Two days later I was faced with a bill that was $1200 over what had been estimated though the procedure and care had not changed from the original estimation. When I confronted the head vet, Dr. Schrader (Vietnam War Veteran), he accused me of trying to avoid paying my bill and refused to remove my cat's sutures. I, too, am a Veteran and I didn't take kindly to his threats, lies and accusations. I even played a recorded voicemail from his associate vet (female), where she verbally indicated the price ($1200 less than the final price shown on the invoice) and he still told me I was a liar and refused to adjust my bill. If I didn't have a security clearance, high morals, impeccable integrity I would have knocked this guy out. I promptly paid the full bill and haven't stepped foot in this godforsaken place again. My recommendation is to avoid this business at all costs or if you do choose to conduct business here, get EVERYTHING in writing. I will be filing an overdue claim with the Better Business Bureau

Business Response:

This complaint is about a case that was treated over a year ago. The client failed to mention that initially a quote of $500 was given to treat and stabilize Mike the cat from a severe urinary obstruction. After Mike was stabilized the doctor discovered that Mike needed extensive surgery to correct a damaged urethra. A second quote for the surgery and multiple days of post operation treatment was given for $1300 to $1800, ending with a statement to owner that the entire bill would be between $2000 to $2500. I was called by the doctor on the case, who asked if I would consent to repairing Mike’s urethra – of course I said yes. Although I was on vacation and two hours away from the clinic I drove the distance just to perform the surgery on Mike. Mike the cat did very well with the surgery and recovered nicely. The owner at time of release never mentioned any discrepancy with charges or quotes. The owner did not try to discuss the bill with me, although I had just reviewed his medical history in detail on Mike’s release. He paid what he wanted to pay, then walked out with his cat. Clients that know me, know that I will listen and respond to their concerns. We of course made several attempts to contact the owner by phone after he walked out, he never returned our calls. To shorten this discussion – for two weeks my manager and the primary care doctor had given him a call to discuss the bill problem, owner did not answer the phone and did not call us back. Then two weeks later, he returned to have the sutures removed, which I did personally. When I tried to discuss the outstanding bill, he started to rant and rave about Military service, about war, about combat and top secret clearance. I tried to show him the entries in the record about phone calls as they related to therapy, prognosis, and about quoting for initial care and the additional quote for surgical and post-surgical care. He would not listen and frankly, I was very nervous about his threatening gestures and his continued discussion about being a combat veteran. (For the record I was in the military for 6 years but I am not a combat veteran and never claimed to be one). I finally ended the discussion by telling him to leave the premises and that I would provide him with his records. He did pay the rest of the bill at that time. Mike’s owner failed to mention that the cat received efficient and excellent life-saving emergency medical care. He failed to mention that I took a break in my vacation, drove several hours just to surgically repair his cat. He failed to mention that Mike had a fantastic recovery. I reviewed with the owner in detail the surgical and medical care of Mike at time of release from the hospital. He never mentioned any problem with charging, nor did request to speak with me at time of check out after I had just released Mike from hospital. All he did was pay what he wanted to pay and walked out the door. I would recommend to Mike’s owner that in the future whenever a billing problem exists, talk to the responsible parties immediately - most of the time we work with people to a satisfactory ending. I debated whether to write this review or not for a few weeks then finally, decided enough is enough. I have been going to Suburban my entire adult life, following my parents who have been faithful clients for a couple decades as well. I lost my beloved kitty last summer and havent been back until a few weeks ago with my new kitten. My problem is not the doctors or the technician who works with the doctors, but the front desk. The front desk staff is absolutely terrible. Not all of them, but since last year, they seem to of had a high turnover. There is a receptionist named Denice who was there and she was busy on the phone and another young lady checked me in. After I checked in and I was waiting for my exam room, the front desk turned into a circus show. There were two girls giggling, laughing and talking loudly the entire time. Even my boyfriend commented on how comical and loud they were. After my appointment, the woman Denice recognized me and we made small banter and we left. I returned last week for my last round of shots for my kitty and I had the same situation over again. Denice was there, recognized me and checked me in. The other two girls were again amongst themselves loudly gigglling and conversing in a matter that in my opinion was once again unprofessional. It's a bit uncomfortable waiting in that large hollow lobby. There used to be another peppy girl with glasses who used to work up front in last year who would always recognize me and greet me and my cat by name, but I have not seen her since I have been back, so she must be gone. I am not giving suburban the 5 stars it truly deserves for the service they provide simply because of the manner of the front desk these days. I read all these negative reviews from years ago, and I disagree, in the past, the front desk have always been superior, but my return visits this year have not. i'm only satisfied with my visits this year.

I want to make 4 points:\r\nFirst, I think the front office staff has gotten much better, probably taking some reviews to heart. In the past they often seemed more interested in talking to each other than in focusing their attention on the client. But it's better now.\r\nSecond, Dr. Schrader is fantastic. He can't be God, but he always takes the time to give good explanations, and offer his best counsel, with complete compassion, and obvious passion for his profession. We have always liked the associates he has hired too.\r\nThird, some of the low ratings are critical of the front office. That's important, but in no way nearly so important as the vets and techs. It doesn't seem fair to give such low ratings based on that one least important criterion--sort of like condemning a restaurant with excellent food and service because the valet parker was rude.\r\nFourth, when we visited our sick dog in the hospital recently we saw first hand what excellent care and comfortable surroundings they were providing to him behind the scenes--regularly cleaning up an incontinent dog.

I have been going for years and finally decided to change today after one more time of being treated like a valueless customer. I would like to write a positive review because I like the veterinarians but having caring and professional Drs. is not enough to be a successful business. It doesn't matter if you have been a customer for years, you will be treated with disrespect. Because I like the Drs. I put up with it, but there are other good veterinarians out there and I plan to take my business elsewhere. I don't think I am being an unreasonable person because I expect to be treated like an individual human being. The other negative reviews are correct about the rigid office rules, the unreasonably high charges, the lack of respect from office staff, and the inflexibility with fees (worse than a medical Drs office). For a long time I thought if my pets got good care I could put up with that. Unfortunately often you need to interact with the office staff, not the Drs. themselves, and after a while it takes it's toll and you get sick of feeling like a doormat. If the veterinarians care about their practice they should seriously reconsider how they run their business. In the meantime, find someplace else where they won't treat you like they couldn't care less about you or your business.

I am shocked by some of these reviews. Some people either have unreasonable expectations or are just nutty over their pets. I have been with Suburban for over three years for boarding and vetinary care, and the staff has always been courteous and attentive. It is simply inaccurate to describe the customer service as anything but professional. The staff have always been incrediblely courteous to both me and my pet for both boarding and care, both in person and over the phone.

The only time I witnessed staff get short with a client was when a woman was outraged by the price she was being charged for a bath/nail service. The client initiated the rude tone upon receiving the bill after ordering the service. It has always been crystal clear to me what is the price of this service so I dont get why she was so surprised (not to mention, baths and clippings are free if you do them at home!!). Perhaps she is one of these unhappy reviewers!

My experience with Suburban vets has also been great. We have been fortunate to have had no real medical problems but we did come in once for some unexplained vomiting. The vet staff were very clear about what was an immediate concern vs. what to watch out for. They also explained what was a necessary cost vs. what was an optional service (at that stage). They were clear about their level of concern and the cost-benefit of various tests, treatments, etc. Most importantly, they gave full information and did not pressure a decision. I am extremely protective of my dog and was visibly worried. Suburban in no way tried to take advantage of this to press for expensive care (and they could have).

As for our regular check ups and treatment, Suburban is not cheap but you get what you pay for as they give excellent care and attention. We have learned many things from our routine visits about caring both for our dog in particular and her breed in general that we never would have known. They do also recommend (and sometimes require) preventitive shots and care but some of this is per county, some is to protect other dogs if you board, and some of it is just good primary care. Although some other groups in the area do provide more comprehensive hours of service, emergency care, etc, we think Suburban is top notch for primary care and safe, short-term boarding.

I wish I could give them 10 stars to make up for some of the dubious reviews on this board. Disgruntled former employees are probably not a good source of consumer reviews, 'Insider Pages'! If you beleive in caring for animals with dignity and being a responsible pet owner, Suburban is a good fit for you and your pets. If you want to spend as little as possible or be served a latte in the waiting room, go someplace else.

Saw a different vet each time I went over the course of a week. Records were incomplete and missed a history of infection from two years ago for which an antibiotic was prescribed.

Cat suffered days, and I had to basically go over and demand a refill of the scrip.

AVOID--This place is all about volume and overcharging for incompetence.

I hate registering for anything but did so JUST so I could rave about Dr. Schrader and his team. I'll share with you a portion of the letter I wrote to Dr. S after my beloved dog passed away. It says it all.

"I know I have told you that I am grateful for the peace I feel over Bruno??s passing away. But I said it in those intense moments where so much else is going on that I don??t know if you really absorbed what I was saying. Peace is precious and it is easily dismantled when you look at it in the rearview mirror. Could I have? Was it too? It is so easy to savage yourself for decision you make that cannot be reversed, losing any sort of feeling of peace. But, not for me and I place that squarely in your hands. Bruno had a wonderful life, longer than I thought possible, and it was a quality life until the very end. I say that with a peace that won??t be dismantled.

There is deftness to how you share information, in pieces that are the right size and the right time. You??ve helped me come to my decision, you didn??t make it for me and unlike some others in your field you didn??t guilt me in to it. You shared information with me; in a way that was pragmatic but with heart - as you walked a minefield of supercharged emotions. Talk about tap dancing on the edge of a sword! I never once doubted that Bruno had the very best of compassionate and professional care, but I wasn??t left simply trusting that. You took the time to educate me and allow me to be a contributor to that care.

To me, I guess it all crystallizes in the phone call in which we made the decision together that it was time. Through my sadness I was amazed that you cared enough to cry on the phone with me, Bruno was one of many patients you care for (and a contrary patient at that). I was humbled by the fact that with all that you are going through, you had compassion for me in my sadness. My god, I couldn??t be more lucky, to have had a dog who lived happily longer than he should have, to be able to choose his moment with peace and to have that control, and yet you, were willing to give me my sadness in the face of having to live through something so much harder.

Dr S and is team are simply the best.

This place is horrible and toxic... I've also heard rumors regarding unlicensed assistants performing procedures that are unlawful in the state of Virginia.... I wish you luck! Make sure the staff can provide the certain credentials! Also Dr. Schrader is not a boarded surgeon! Wow... Amazing how many surgeries fail!!! Think first, what's pretty on the out side is ugly on the inside!!!! I have to say something positive for the basics they are okay bur really pricey!!!

Fabulous, very caring Vets. Our older dog, Lucy, is alive only because Dr. Casper found an extremely small yet suspicious "bump" during a routine checkup. She recommended we have it checked by a specialist at South Paws, which we did and it was a VERY aggressive form of cancer. The Vets at SP were amazed that Dr. C felt the bump as they had great difficulty locating it. 2.5 years later, and after surgery and chemotherapy, Lucy is doing well.
Lucy has had a LOT of medical issues, all diagnosed and treated by Dr. Casper; hyperthyroidism, diabetes, cataracts (surgery at The Hope Center). Dr. Benham has been there for Lucy when Dr. C was away and has taken great care of both of our "girls." Bottom Line - just great. Very busy after work and on Saturdays, but a wonderful staff and a place in which you can safely place your trust.

I truly wish I good give the Suburban Animal Hospital zero stars.

My father brought our dog in to check on a growth she had on her abdomen. After a brief examination, Dr. Kramer informed my father that our dog had breast cancer which had likely spread to various internal organs. We were told our dog had anywhere from one week to a year left of her life and in order to 'cure' her of the cancer, she would have to undergo various surgeries and treatments which would cost at least $21,000 not including any post-surgery medication.

Naturally, my father left incredibly upset and had to pay a hefty sum for a few moments with the vet. Not only was the doctor and the front desk cold-hearted and rude to him in delivering such terrible news, but turns out they were 100% COMPLETELY WRONG IN THEIR DIAGNOSIS!

After visiting a second vet purely to get pain medication for what we thought was our dying dog, my father was told that she was merely having a false pregnancy. A minor surgery, which will cost less than 2.5% of the $21,000 quoted by suburban animal hospital will cure her completely and she will go on to live a healthy, long life.

Overall, Suburban Animal Hospital was rude, unkind, and gave us a false diagnosis whilst trying to get us to pay for expensive, unneeded medical treatments. They clearly do not care about animals or the people who love them. They are interested in money.

I will never go here again and would never recommend this establishment to any pet owner.

I truly wish I good give the Suburban Animal Hospital zero stars.

Business Response:

My name is Gary Schrader I own Suburban Animal Hospital. I have reviewed your record and apologize for any communications errors. First I have never heard of an outlandash quote - of $21,000. Suburban has never even received that kind of money for any medical or surgical therapy for the 60 years we have been in business. I assure you that prior to even creating a quote for services the doctor reviewed methods of making the diagnosis, then described tests needed to assure that your father's dog could handle the therapy or surgery, if surgery was required. Only after a confirmed diagnosis was made would a quote for surgery be provided. This quote would of been made in writing, it would of contained operation expenses, cost of in hospital care and cost of medications, he would also be given a copy. I truly wish that you did not live in California so that you could of accompanied him to the office exam where you could of asked the appropriate questions - to clear up confusion. I can also assure you we sent the medical record to the1st animal hospital requested & a copy of records to 2nd animal hospitals your father visited.Feel free to call me anytime to discuss this problem.

this place is great. yes, they are BUSY, but great. All the doctors are awesome. What surprises me the most is the front desk staff comments. They are incredibly nice. I haven't been going there for long, so they don't know me that well, but the last time I was there, as I awaited my appointment, i watched the front desk staff greet several client walking in by their names or their dogs names! I did observe the front desk girls talking about their personal lives, but nothing too inappropriate like the other reviews suggest. It is also very clean, doesn't smell like wet dogs, which is a big plus. I have seen 3 doctors there, I think there are 6? They were all very nice as well, a bit quick but I was there for a healthy checkup, then an eye infection and another appt to recheck that eye. I was not there to banter about politics and the weather. Overall, you get what you pay for disregard the other negative reviews

Dr. Schrader is a wonderful vet. We have both a dog and a cat and have taken them to him for nine years. I would not go anywhere else -- we had two separate emergencies and both times they were ready the second we rushed the pet there. (And everything turned out well, in no small part due to their caring and concern.) The staff is always friendly and helpful--yes, they are busy sometimes but it is a busy practice. I feel lucky that they are open 7 days a week and have seen Dr. S on a Sunday. The prices are very fair and, best of all, Dr. S genuinely cares about us and our pets, He takes time to explain things and help us make informed choices. Pls disregard those reviewers who perhaps are not being objective. I could go on, but suffice it to say that we and are neighbors and friends are highly satisfied w/ Sub Animal Hospital!!

Look no further. That is what I told someone "checking out" vets. No place is perfect but I will say I agree with what others say Dr. S cares, he takes time to talk to you. He did 2 TPLO surgeries on my dog and charged a fair flat fee. She is doing great. We take our cat there as well. They are busy but if you are nice to the staff, they are nice to you. Too many people treat staff like they are servants. They are people too and deserve respect. When I go even just for meds, I take my dog. The staff remembers us and we all have a laugh at how crazy my dog is.
As far as prices, my dog had a limp and he did dozens of X-rays. He only charged the minimum. The prices are fair and they include what you can't buy and that is someone with a heart.

I wish I had read the reviews of Suburban Animal Hospital before making a kenneling appointment there. Without question they have the WORST customer service I have experienced in my many years as a pet owner. As a new resident to the Arlington area, and a military officer who has lived throughout the US, I was astounded with the curt and unprofessional behavior my husband and I were subjected to both in person and over the phone by the front office staff. We made a kennel reservation with them on the advice of dear friends who, to Suburban's credit, recommended the hospital to us b/c the vet had saved their dog's life. I'm confident the staff veterinarian is extremely good and probably very professional, the problem is that clients have to deal with the front office staff and they are in a word, atrocious. I have never taken the time to write an online review and felt duty bound to sign up for this service so that I could warn other newcomers to the area. Pet owner be wary - the reviews on this page are consistent - excellent vet, expensive service, horrible front office staff. Recommend you take your pet elsewhere - I wish we had. (I am only giving it one star b/c this review service requires people to select at least one. I would selection ZERO starts if possible.)

My neighbor had a TPLO done on his shepard, the dog ended up contracting MRSA!!! First let me state, I have researched and Dr. Schrader is not a boarded surgeon and in my opinion has no business doing these types of procedures. I ran into a technician who previously worked there and he said he remembered the patient, and also recalls the overall surgical techniques and the catheter placement techniques weren't very sterile. Wow, that's incredible! I'm a scrub nurse, after hearing that, I would never take my pets there!

For 12 years, my wife and I have been taking our two dogs to Suburban Animal Hospital, and we can't imagine a better, more caring, professional group of veterinarians and technicians. Dr. Schrader in particular has been superb, caring for both dogs through thick and thin, performing complicated surgery on one dog with great success, providing us with wise advice in a compassionate and comforting manner, etc. Other doctors we've seen when Dr. Schrader wasn't available, such as Dr. Benham and Dr. Kalinsky, also have been excellent. The only negatives from our perspective - and these are basically minor - are the traffic around the building, the tight parking, and the lack of emergency 24-hour care, but other than that, it's hard to imagine a better place for your "best friends." We strongly, strongly recommend Suburban Animal Hospital if you're looking for absolutely superb veterinary care.

We have been using Suburban for years and I have nothing but great things to say about them. Dr. Schrader is our main contact, but every other vet we have seen has been thorough and very good. Dr. Schrader takes the time to completely investigate and explain your pets situations. I have had several unusual illnesses with my dogs over the years, and Dr. Schrader has been exception every time. Even when the outcome was not what we had hoped, Dr. Schrader and his staff have been nothing but professional and compassionate. I have 2 dogs and a cat and I would never consider going any where else.

We had taken our 16-year-old Abyssinian cat to a different vet (Cherrydale) a few days before. The cat had a badly swollen front paw and was not able to walk on it. After the vet did a barely cursory exam, we had been told that the cat likely had either a tumor or heart issues and was probably at the end of her life. The options offered were to keep her at the vet's overnight to be hydrated or to take her home with some anti-inflammatory medication (which we later found out was actually a pain medication and can be lethal to cats). We decided to take the cat to Suburban for a second opinion.

There, after an exceedingly thorough exam by Dr. Schrader, we found out that our cat was actually doing quite well for a cat her age and had likely injured herself jumping down from someplace. He was impressively knowledgeable about her breed and spent half an hour with us, explaining what some of the breed's weaknesses are and how to deal with them. Both he and the vet tech who worked with him were wonderful, and we will definitely be using Suburban Animal Hospital as our vet from now on.

An added bonus was the very reasonable fee of $86.

I chose Suburban after moving to the area and surveying the reviews online. Despite some negative comments, I decided to find out for myself.
-hours that fit a professional lifestyle (late and accommodating last-minute appointments).
-CLEAN and happy clients everywhere
-helpful and plentiful staff
-play/walk outdoor area next to the vet
-quick, to the point and will spend time to talk to you (I had a phone conversation with my vet after SHE called me back from a call- no costs involved, just great staff)

overall- great place, great staff, reasonable prices (we are paying for our 'family' to visit the doctor's office here people..)

cons:
-it is at a difficult location to pull into
-...that's the only con

I recently called Suburban Animal Hospital about my dog who had an open sore that wasn't healing. They wouldn't talk to me about it on the phone, and by the time I was able to get in for an appointment the sore had healed. I called to cancel and they said there was a $50 cancelation fee (an appointment is $76). I asked if there was any way it could be waived, since there's no point bringining in a dog that's not sick anymore. The rude receptionist responded that we had been coming there for a year and there are signs everywhere about the policy so I should have known better. In my opinion, the fact that we have been coming for a year is all the more reason for them to treat us with courtesy and respect. It seems this hospital is more interested in making money than providing good service. I told the receptionist I would be switching vets (not that she seemed to care).

Also, every time we go there we see a different doctor, none of whom know our dog. The last time we went the vet didn't even know our dog was deaf (she had been diagnosed by another vet in their hospital and it wasn't even on her record). I intend to find a vet who will take the time to get to know us and our dog and who isn't just there to take our money.

I have been going to Suburban Animal hospital since being recommended by my old boss in 2002. I took my cat, Whitetoes there after her sickness had been ignored by another Vet. Suburban did their best to treat her and were able to make her comfortable in her last year. I was grateful for their kindness and caring.
My cat President was diagnosed with diabetes and our vet Dr. Casper is amazing. She is so wonderful, always listens to my concerns, questions, etc. My other cat Ariana has always been treated well, and we recently saw Dr. Benham, because Dr. Casper was out and Dr. Benham is great too! I love the vets, the techs and all the staff, they are wonderful and I would recommend Suburban to anyone!

Love these guys. My parent's used then for all our dogs when we were growing up and now my husband & I use Suburban. The girls behind the front desk have ALWAYS been very helpful and friendly to me. Every doctor that I've had any of our dogs see has been very compassionate and taken the time to explain things fully. These people CARE about your dog. I do agree that they are expensive, but they take such good care of our pets that I feel like I just have to deal with the costs. Oh, also their groomer, Carol, loves her job and all her clients. My dogs actually like to go to this Vet.

There must be a time & place for the front desk employees to seek their gossip & personal issues, NOT at work & especially when it distracts them from waiting customers. This issue has happened every time I've been present. It seems like an easy fix, will someone retrain these people for proper etiquette?! Or at least keep the drama behind closed doors & off the work phone lines for us all to witness while waiting. I have also been mislead into taking my dying dog to a nearby hospital to only rediscover what I already knew. His demise was congenital heart disease, something i've known years prior & what I assumed was in his chart. Apparently not. When showing symptoms, they rushed us to the hospital to have them say there is nothing they can do with a SUPER sized bill on the way out the door, THANKS A LOT. Not only that, they charged me twice for the same tests at this clinic. Poor bed side manner taking advantage of grief stricken customers. I sure hope they've cleaned up their act.

I never write reviews, but my experience with Suburban Animal hospital has been so extraordinarily positive in contrast to other vets in the area that I've been inspired to write this one. I have lived in the DC area for over 10 years and my two schnauzers and their cat have seen a number of vets over the years for various issues. When my first schnauzer was a puppy (she's now 9 1/2) we saw a vet in Georgetown. When we moved out to Arlington we started going to Arlington Animal Hospital where the vet was lovely (and still is), but the care was significantly more expensive and the facilities were also pretty outdated. I had one experience with Cherrydale when my cat had an abscess that cost so much money (unnecessarily I later learned) that I never went back although the facilities were nice. When we learned that my older schnauzer needed to have a bladder stone removed and we decided to spay my younger schnauzer, we went back to Arlington Animal hospital. They gave us an estimate for the spay of around $400, which seemed about right for the area. However, by the time we had done blood-work and a pre-op visit for just the schnauzer for the spay, we had already spent over $300. They also made mistakes. We brought in medical records of the schnauzer's recent shots, but the hospital failed to read the recent rabies vaccinations, revaccinated them, and charged us for the mistake. Thank goodness that wasn't dangerous. After the first blood-work for the spay, they told me they'd need to repeat blood-work at a cost of another $200 + and when I asked about the costs given the first estimate, they claimed that $400 was never reasonable, that the spay would likely come to 2K, and that the other operation would be closer to 4K. They were neither apologetic nor nice about the difference in price from what they had originally mentioned. The receptionist was haughty and rude about my inquiry into price as if my asking about the details of $6K in vet costs meant I was not willing to care properly for my pets. I have never minded spending money on my pets, but the amount seemed particularly excessive for the spay, much less the other surgery, and when I called around, all other vets in the area, except for Cherrydale, agreed. We took both schnauzers to Suburban for a second opinion. From the beginning, it was a wonderful and refreshing experience. The hospital facilities were clean and modern, the reception staff was very friendly and affectionate with the dogs, they have lab facilities on-site, and the doctor was professional, kind, skilled, and honest. They gave us detailed estimates for each surgery that included an extra night in the hospital for each dog and, more importantly, they held to them. Even with the extra night in the hospital for both dogs to monitor their recovery, the spay came to about $450 and the two surgeries together came to just over $2K, a full $4K less than I was quoted at Arlington Animal Hospital... and for more modern, extended, and better care. Dr. Casper did both surgeries, worked with us on scheduling to ensure both girls could go in on the same day and recover together, and followed up with us personally via telephone multiple times throughout their recovery. I have never had a vet as personally attentive to my pets' care or as straight-forward with me about their needs. Ultimately, in addition to the amazing attention and care my dogs received, what I appreciated most about Suburban was their honesty. I have felt 'sold' or 'guilted' at times by other vets who suggest tests or procedures that are costly and you later learn are not necessary. Throughout this experience Suburban has been completely straight-forward with me about my dogs and their needs, what is critical, what is extra, and why. Because of that, I feel much more comfortable paying for extras knowing I am making the best choices for my pets and my family instead of simply funding a vet's overhead costs. I give Suburban Animal Hospital my highest recommendation and my thanks for being a bright point of honest, good quality, loving care for pets in the DC area. This is a top notch animal hospital and we hope to visit them for years and years to come. Katherine JacobsArlington resident & mom to 2 schnauzers, a cat, and a little girl.

I found the staff at Suburban Animal Hospital to be very friendly and very helpful. They were so attentive to me and my little ones. I have been to a number of animal hospitals before and I've never gotten that kind of a welcome. It's great to know that there are still nice people around who genuinely seem to care. I have seen three of the five (I think there are five) doctors and they are all very nice as well. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Suburban to anyone. They are truly real animal lovers and for us it's always a fun time! My dogs even love to go there too!

I would not recommend this veterinary hospital because there are better veterinary hospitals in the area with kinder staff. My experience was not good.

We have four dogs and are at the clinic often. Dr. Shrader is our vet and he has been wonderful. He is very thorough in examining our dogs and explaining results to us. He performed surgery on my dog's leg which has allowed him to walk on it again. The front desk staff is pleasant, the clinic is clean and they are always able to see my dogs that day or the next if there is an illness. The cost is worth the quality treatment and care my dogs receive at Suburban Animal Hospital.

This place is not nice to new clients, the front desk practically ignored me when i walked in. They rush you to fill out your paperwork and then once the vet sees you they rush you out of the room and send you home with a HUGE bill. Overall not happy with my experience.

For 26 years Suburban Animal Hospital has cared for four cats and three dogs that were part of our family. The vets have been great and provided excellent care for our animals, helping to educate us about their needs and conditions. We have never been treated rudely or impatiently by a vet. (In any case where that complaint is made, I'd like to hear the whole story.) Dr. Schroeder had to euthanize our ancient border collie mix about ten years ago, and was very compassionate. A few years ago one of the vets saved my seemingly paralyzed German Shepherd mix, now 15 year old, by diagnosing Lyme Disease and thyroid deficiency. Our dog is no longer paralyzed, really spry and enjoys a great quality of life.

With a few exceptions, I haven't found the front desk to be hugely friendly or helpful, something that hasn't changed over the years. (Eye contact upon my arrival at the desk would go a long way.) But as long as the staff makes my appointments and writes up my bills correctly, I don't consider that a serious problem. And when I have come in with a sick animal, they have been sympathetic on the whole.

Would I recommend Suburban to pet owners? Absolutely, as far as I'm concerned, there's no better place around for animal care.

Suburban Animal Hospital is the best animal hospital I've ever been to! The front staff is always welcoming and helpful! I have seen most of the doctors which work there, and I must say all of them are extremely friendly and intelligent. Every time I bring my animals there, to be groomed, boarded, or an annual visit every staff member seems to have a smile and be eager to help me. If your looking for a new vet please use suburban, you will be pleased!

I was at Suburban last Thursday morning and the customer service was horrible. I was astonished to hear the bad language used by the girls at the front desk (I could hear it from where I was sitting). There was dog pee near one of the benches and when I went into the bathroom the toilet looked like it hadn't been cleaned. Dr. Benham was awesome but otherwise, a really unprofessional and bad experience altogether.

The front desk is difficult. They want to know in detail what your need is, for reasons that are not clear because the vets do not refer back to previously provided information. Subsequent visits or calls with vets are usually back at square one - they sometimes even contradict themselves. Maybe they are too busy to take the time to know their clients or that's just not their way. They also charge for missed appointments, but do not provide courtesy reminder calls.

All of my experiences with Dr. Shrader and his staff over the past 8 years have been far and away outstanding, and can't even compare to other vets I've tried previously. I know him to set very high standards for himself and all of his staff in terms of level of pet care and respectful interaction with pet owners, and it shows. I do believe that he is such a decent and committed man, that if there were any problems with his practice, he would want to know and would act immediately to fix them. He is gentle, compassionate, and extremely knowledgable, and he spends whatever time is needed with each appointment, carefully explaining everything and answering all questions, while never being condescending or hurried. Three important examples of his care:

1. After having my dog vaccinated at another vet, she developed large lumps on her back. I feared a fast growing cancer and was beside myself with anxiety. I found Suburban in the phone book and they took me in as a brand new walk-in patient on a Saturday. Every one of the staff was so compassionate and kind to me, seeing my obvious distress. Dr. Shrader discovered that the lumps were actually dangerous absesses from dirty needles having been used at the other vet (some vets, but not Dr. Shrader's practice, re-use needles to cut costs, and if they're not properly sterilized, this is the result). Dr. Shrader took my dog in for emergency surgery within a few hours and all went well.

2. I moved 3 years later and started using another vet closer to my new home. After they diagnosed my dog with heartworms and were scheduling her to begin treatment, I decided I wanted her treated by Dr. Shrader. I asked that he provide me with a price for this, and took her in for the appointment, after having her records transferred over. When I got there, Dr. Shrader advised re-testing to be sure. He told me (the other vet didn't) that the test has a high false positive rate and that re-testing and looking at the blood under a microscope were important before proceeding. He also said that if I'd only missed one dose of the preventative (which I had), heart worms weren't possible. I agreed to more blood work. Suburban does NOT send blood work out to labs to be read by technicians, rather their vets read the slides and tests themselves in their own lab. Not only did my dog NOT have heart worms, but the lab of the previous vet had read the wrong dot on the test! The test shows 3 different diseases/infections depending on which dot shows up. So it wasn't even a false positive, but complete blunder on the part of the technician who misread the test. Dr. Shrader ran it twice, then looked at two different samples under the microscope, and then did another test that spins the blood just to be sure! But he only charged me for the first one. His careful approach saved her from expensive and very dangerous treatment (it's arsenic). Because of her advanced age, there was a significant risk that it could easily have put her into liver failure and killed her. And even if it hadn't, the treatment is very unpleasant. As to cost, the other vet's charge for this treatment was double that of Dr. Shrader. When I asked why this was so, he explained that you have to pay for a whole batch of the drug, but about half is unused so is wasted. He usually calls around to other vets see if any of them is about to treat a dog so they can split the the drug batch and save the owners money. This is another testiment to his character b/c he goes to that extra trouble just to save the pet owner money, since he'd get paid either way.

3. In 2001 I recommended Dr. Shrader to a colleague. Her old dog's condition was proving difficult to diagnose and at least one other vet told her the dog was dying and should be put down. Dr. Shrader accurately diagnosed and successfully treated the condition, and her dog lived a quality life for another 2 years! After her first visit with Dr. Shrader, she expressed such gratitude for having found him since no one else had able to help. She and her husband had been preparing themselves for saying goodbye to their dog when Dr. Shrader turned things around.

Since the heartworm fiasco, I'm back with Suburban Animal Hospital to stay, and will continue to go there, regardless of the extended travel time.

Dr. Shrader and his staff of doctors, technicians and administrative assistants are very knowledgeable, caring and helpful. They have been taking care of my two chihuahuas for four years now and are doing a fine job with their care. I would recommend this hospital to anyone.

I've been going to Suburban Animal Hospital for 5 years since I got my dog. They are rather expensive, but I could shop around for better prices if I was really interested. They've always been sweet to my dog, the space and parking is better now that it's renovated. We rarely need to see a vet since she's pretty healthy, but when we do they never suggest procedures just to suggest them (ex: I asked about dental care and they examined her and said she'd be fine for another 1-2 years with tooth-brushing). I also like their grooming service, the price for that is the cheapest around.

I'm surprised at some of the more negative experiences people have had here (not that I doubt them- those things can happen anywhere). We've been taking our dog to Suburban for 5+ years, and have had only good, sometimes lifesaving, experiences. The most important one was when one of the vets correctly diagnosed our dog with a life-threatening condition from pretty vague symptoms. They whisked her off to surgery in minutes, prevented a rupture, and saved her life. When she chewed on a poison ant trap and I panicked, they did quick research, called the manufacturer, and within 30 minutes called back, told me what to do, and reassured me all would be well. Same happened when she ate some chocolate. When my dog recently developed some benign growths the vet spent quite a bit of time with me discussing options and giving unpressured, nonjudgmental advice. Every time our dog has had blood work done, the vet has called back as soon as the results were in, usually well before we expected them, and called us in off-hours, spending as much time as needed discussing the results. We have never felt rushed. Suburban has taken us on very short notice when we have needed, and we have never had trouble getting our dog in in a timely manner. The front desk staff has never been overly friendly with me, but I really don't care as long as they do their job. I'm not there for a social visit. I don't know what their policy is when it comes to new vs. existing clients, so I wouldn't promise newbies that they could get in as quickly as we usually do. Don't like the tight parking spaces, but the new waiting area is the best I've ever seen.

I actually used to work at Suburban Animal Hospital and can absolutely agree with several of the reviews that I read. While the hospital is a short distance from my house, I would not recommend their services as a general rule. The fees, even for a check-up, are through the roof, and scheduling is frequently a nightmare. They are not usually open on Sundays, so you should definitely have a back-up hospital for emergencies. They are not welcoming to walk-ins, particularly to new clients, which is another reason to have the number for a emergency vet as an alternative. The doctors and techs are knowledgeable but often not personable, which is something to be prepared for. Additionally, because they have so many clients, test results and the concerns of pet-owners are often overlooked. If you want a response or test result, you will without a doubt have to call the office multiple times in order to get a concrete answer. Do not be afraid to leave messages. When your pet's health is at stake, you will need to be assertive and proactive. The people working at the front desk often come across completely incompetent and rude as well.
My suggestions for anyone new to the area or thinking about bringing their pets to suburban: I would never bring my dog to the kennel. The dogs do not get the exercise that they need. Several of the Vets are relatively knowledgeable, and the technology is really advanced, so if your pet has some unexplainable disease/symptom, you may want to make an appointment at Suburban. I wouldn't use their services unless it was absolutely necessary. Good luck all, and hope this is helpful!

Business Response:

Gary Schrader Hello this is Gary Schrader, Not anonymous. We have been here in this area for over 30 years. We do have staff available 7 days a week, Sundays are from 10 AM to Noon. It is very hard to reply to an ex- staff member who was probably let go because of inability to handle his or her job. The fact that we see a lot of clients must mean that we are doing something right in order to have such a devote clientele. Every business must improve and criticism helps me to be alert to our areas of weakness so that changes can be made. I have been fortunate that most of my staff has been with me for years and are quite knowledgeable. The business of veterinary medicine is very physical with a lot of lifting and walking and holding of our pets which has evolved to employees being young. Our employee policy is that of equal rights, no discrimination, all ages are well come. One of my jobs is too teach these young people proper decor, courtesy and manners. I have always told a client if they have any bad experiences please call me personally. As to responding to anonymous ?? how can I respond to someone who does not have the conviction to take a stand by giving me their name.

Do not send your animals to Suburban Animal Hospital! We used Dr. Schrader for our pets for a few years until he killed our dog.

Last year we brought our dog to Suburban because he seemed to be losing his appetite and energy. Dr. Schrader told us the dog had Lyme disease that had damaged his kidneys irreparably. The worst part was that SUBURBAN KNEW HE HAD LYME FOR A WHOLE YEAR and never bothered to contact us.

We were told after tests two years ago that we would be ??contacted immediately" if the tests came back positive. Well, the test was positive and they never called or sent a letter. If we had known two years ago that our dog was having suffering from Lyme, we could have given him antibiotics and started him on a diet that could have kept his kidneys in better condition.

Our dog had to be euthanized (at a different veterinary office!) and I miss him every day. I hope no other person and their dog will be put into the hands of this veterinary office. We got no apology -- just a bill.

gary schrader Hello this is Gary Schrader : I know who this client is and respect their wish to stay anonymous. What they got wrong was that this man??s wife was told about the positive test. That I spent an extra 50 minutes explaining in detail the disease of Lymes. They did not mention that they had given us an incorrect phone number; but we were able to obtain the correct number and called them with the results of the secondary test. They failed to mention that their dog was always late on their vaccinations, that as owner they were very sporadic on obtaining flea, tick and heartworm preventative. They also failed to mention that their little dog??s clinical illness started in late may but they did not have that dog seen professionally for an examination until October ?? 4 months later. I am very sorry that their dog past away, but I also know that the blame here is with the owner.

I have been taking my dogs to this vet for about 15 years, after moving from another nearby vet that did not interact as well with me or my animals. On the whole, I have been pleased. The vet care has always been very thorough during regular check ups and the doctors have taken the time to explain things. Two of my dogs have been rescues, not particularly good with strangers, but they've taken well to each of the Surburban vets. About 2007, they remodelled the building and added a lot more space for boarding. I didn't board there before the renovation because it was cages only, but have started to board there now that they have indoor runs. Wait times to see the vet for routine check ups can be very long during walk-in hours, but is much better during appointment times. My dogs have been pretty healthy, so I've only had three "sick" visits. One was a referral to another vet for surgery. Sick visits can get pricey. Suburban gave me options/choices on how to proceed and I chose to do the least invasive/cheapest test or procedure first.

It was close so we thought, score, this is perfect! Not! Prices were twice as much as our last vet. One of the doctors said, "I don't have time [to help you] right now." Unbelievable, who is paying who for service? Front desk people are nice to some people (return customers, maybe?) and rude to new customers. To top it off the parking lot is very small and difficult to get in and out of. I do not recommend this vet office.

Dr. Schrader and his staff have provided excellent care for my dogs over the past six years. Of all the vets I've had in my life, Dr. Schrader is the most knowledgable, helpful, and kind. He always takes the time to educate me and has a great bedside manner with my dogs. His staff has always been professional and helpful to me, even when they are extremely busy, which they usually are. The new facility is fantastic too! I am incredibly grateful for their skilled professionalism and dedication to my pets. -A. Barton

For the most part we have received good care there, but if your pet has an emergency on a Sunday, the staff and doctors are in no mood to help you so you had better take your pet somewhere else.

My mom has taken our cat to the Suburban Animal Hospital for a few years now. A few years ago, around 2003-2004, the vet was great. A doctor there, Dr. Kalinsky (SP?) was very helpful with saving our cat from a medical condition (but now she's the least bit helpful; see below). However, now in 2007, my mother had a horrible experience there. The cat had an infection and other health problems, so my mom had to spend over $1,000 there in one week. Dr. Benham (SP?) was very helpful and caring. She told my my mom that if they had any problems after the cat's initial appt., they should bring the cat in over the weekend - on Saturday or Sunday. So, the cat wasn't eating well after her appt. and my mom brought the cat in on Sunday. The overweight Asian receptionist there was VERY rude to my mother - saying that they don't have technicians on Sunday and that they can't help her. She then went and asked Dr. Kalinsky if they would help the cat, and she was extremely rude as well. She said that "it is not right to bring the cat in on a Sunday." What is she doing there on a Sunday if she's not available to help?? My mom then started crying, as she was very upset about the situation and the cat's health. Dr. Kalinksy said "Oh well. She's old anyway. These things happen." Sensitive? I certainly don't think so! Dr. Kalinsky then said it's probably kidney failure, even though an ultrasound done a few days earlier did not show kidney failure. Dr. Kalinsky is rude, unhelpful, and insensitive. If you must use this animal hospital, please only see Dr. Schraeder or Dr. Benham. And make sure you don't have a need to visit the vet on a Sunday - or be prepared.

I have been going exclusively to Suburban Animal Hospital for over 30 years for the care of each my three dogs over these years. I am very loyal to Suburban Animal Hospital, because of their loyalty to the care of my animals. 30 years ago, Dr. Gary Schrader saved the life of my dog, who I had found spralled, listless on the kitchen floor upon returning from work. I will never forget that night; Dr. Schrader chasing me out of the area so he could save my dog. From that moment, I was hooked on Dr. Schrader as a Veterinarian, because I could see he cared about saving my dog. As the years passed, I noticed that Dr. Schrader always takes the time to educate me about the matter for which I have consulted him for my pet. As a professional myself (a lawyer and teacher), education of my client has always served me well; because an educated the client is able to help me better help them. Dr. Schrader is truly in interested in the care of animals, over everything, this is why he takes the time to educate. Also, there was Dr. Fennel, another great pick at Suburban Animal Hospital for her great, competent care of my dog. My dogs have lived long, healthy lives, the last one, 17 years. I have relocated to 15 miles away. There is a Veterinarian Hospital in walking distance. However, the answer, no matter how tempting, is No! I will never go anywhere else as long as Dr. Gary Schrader and his competent Veterinary and friendly support staff are there to take care of my pets. And, no- the waiting room was never too small, it's just that there always is a crowd, and it's no wonder. Now the new place is larger, but that will not make it bigger; the crowd will always be there because the place is 1st class care at fair prices. And, the wait is not long, either. Thank you to Suburban Animal Hospital!

Ending the life of a 14 year old, much loved family Golden Retriever is never easy, but Dr. Shrader yesterday was professional, poised, and thoughtful and made an impossible situation at least bearable. He diagnosed Bentley in easy to understand terms, gave us the difficult odds and costs involved in sustaining his life, and gently provided us advice on what to do.

My wife and kids were very agitated, as was I, and tears were streaming everywhere, but the staff there and Dr. Shrader responded at every turn. They offered my "old friend", as he referred to Bentley, and my family comfort and dignity in the worst of times.

It's a good place.

My sister and I have used Suburban Animal Hospital for a few years -- for five small dogs, two greyhounds, and two fat cats. Nice folks, good care, open office hours (just drop in). I forget why we stopped going to the other one on Broad St., but we feel at home at Suburban. I think it's their attitude that sold us.

The waiting area is rather small, but that may have changed in the last few months due to what look like renovations. Anyway, I don't care about the size of the waiting area.

My only complaint would be that they don't have appointments (as far as I know), so it's pot-luck on how long it will take, but we've never waited more than, oh, 20-30 minutes.

PROS: Walk-in hours, practical attitude about pets
CONS: No appointments (I don't think)

Dr. Gary Schrader and his staff have been caring for the health needs of my canine family for nearly 16 years. He has particularly demonstrated a great deal of knowledge and experience with my English Bulldogs, which is difficult to find in this area. He is honest and direct with his advice, explaining all of the options, while allowing you to make the best possible decision for you and your loved ones at the time.

You will find he and his staff to be generally caring and considerate. They not only remember me and my dogs from visit to visit, but remember our names. They have shown great compassion with the loss of three of three of my own over the years.

His office is very rescue friendly. I would see no one else.

PROS: Experienced, "rescue friendly " English Bulldog Veterinarian
CONS: None

I'm sorry that other reviewer had a bad experience. I've been with this vet for almost two years now. They know my cat by name and always treat her like their own. All the vets have spent a great deal with me when I come to visit. I am a paranoid pet owner, so I know that I worry about things that are nothing. These vets treat me with respect and have never made me feel silly. We've moved a bit further away, but I still bring my cat here. They are in the process of renovating their building, maybe that is why the waiting room is a bit small right now.
