The food was good but it does need more flavor. Not the worst I've ever had. I've been back a few times. Being from CA I wouldn't call this Mexican food though. More like a white persons take on it. Stay away from the salsa. It's bland and

I think we may have lucked out and missed the busiest days, because our experience was great all around. The staff was quite friendly, even tolerating some stupid questions that I had.
If you go, be sure to check out the restaurant

Like many other reviewers, I went to Agua Verde on word of mouth. I love kayaking and Mexican food.
Plus my dad was visiting from California last weekend, and Agua Verde was on many to-do's during his visit., so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

Much to my surprise (all the positive reviews) we didn't make it past kayaking. The staff upon check-in was extremely snappy and patronizing, and while we did complete our very own fun kayaking adventure in Seattle, it was at no thanks to the staff at Agua Verde.

While checking in one of the male staff abruptly and aggressively approached me at the counter and asked, "how long were you guys waiting?!?!"...."Just tell me how long you guys were waiting?!?!" ...."You don't know?!?!"

YIKES! I was kind of shocked, and didn't know how to respond. Then the young lady behind the counter rolled her eyes at me for stuttering. It was all down hill from there. The whole time during check in she was as though she couldn't be bothered to be helping us, and any action on my part was up for grabs when it came to eye rolls and sneering glares.

Nevertheless, after a nice paddle on Lake Union, I thought perhaps I'd give Agua Verde a redeeming chance, but that was wishful thinking. The check-out staff was just as snide as the others. The young lady (a different one from when we checked-in) had just as bad of an attitude, with the same eye rolling issue, and again, seemed inconvenienced by our business.

I'll keep to NWOC for my kayaking needs, and my good eats to restaurants with helpful, happy, and friendly staff.

I will preface what I am about to write with this disclaimer: I only went there once (that was all it took) and that was some time ago. So maybe things have changed for the better since our first / last visit. I shudder to think they have gotten worse. The fact that so many people have rated this place as highly as they have proves either that they have never had really good Mexican food, or that all the reviews were written by the owners and friends and family of the owners. The food we had was just bad. And I will leave it at that. And if the $9.00 mango flavored frozen Marguerita had 1 drop on tequila in it, then I am a banana.

Pros: Lovely situation on Lake Union (that's it)

Cons: Worst Mexican food I have ever had. Sorry! But there it is!

.

I love the atmosphere, the food, the view. Great place to grab a bite to eat as long as your not in a hurry.

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE service....will NEVER visit or send anyone I know to this business. It's a LONG story but I was treated and somewhat harassed for having a Gift Certificate with NO expiration from 2004 that I finally got the owner to honor.

ALL of my future paddling on the Lake will be with NW-OUTDOOR Center. WAY more professional and HAPPY to see you.

I have been here a few times, always in Summer, and it has always been crowded. Tacos Bacalao (fried fish tacos) are my favorite along with their cactus nachos and Mango Margaritas. Mmmm... Nice having a salsa bar (the mango salsa is my favorite). Try to snag a spot on the deck overlooking the water.

Cons: Long line, can be a wait esp. on summer weekends, HARD to find parking!

.

This place has fresh tortilla's, very fresh salsas, and entrees and delicious and inexpensive. You can sit outside on the deck, or inside. Before or after, enjoy a kayak ride into Lake Washington or just paddling around Lake Union.

Agua verde is a good spot for lunch, with respectable fish tacos and the other dishes consistently tasty. Honestly though, I only come here because it's close to UW Health Sciences (where I practically live.) It might not be worth a trip out of your way....

At Aqua Verde, you may have to wait in line to order, but it moves quickly and gives you time to decide what you want. This is a great casual mexican spot on the water with killer food and great service. Lots of vegie items (including all sides), but if you eat fish - go for the fish tacos (fried fish). After paddling, be sure to grab a bite here and enjoy the view.

I love Agua Verde. Sometimes we have to wait for a table but that is fine because it is well worth is. I love the deck. It has a great vibe. The food is fresh and original. I have never felt rushed or unwelcome. It is great for a night out with friends.

I love the food and drinks at this place. One exceptional part about this restaurant is the take out window -- you can order your food and take it to the waterfront to eat. The atmosphere isn't bad inside, and the patio tables have a fabulous view.

The food still tastes ok but the tacos have plummeted from taco-bus-on-ranier good (and these are *&$#-ing delicious at $1.00 each) to not bad. The problem is that instead of 3 tortillas filled with enough 'stuff' to get 3 good tacos, now you get two tortillas and enough 'stuff' to make 1-1/2 good tacos. The inside menus clearly say that for $10.75 you get three tacos and 2 sides...well, if you only get two tacos and a lame bag of chips for $10.75 then go to the window for an explanation you'll be rebuffed by the understaffed, strangely arrogant and un-accomodating amateurs wait staff. Back to the taco bus on rainier...these tacos are $1.00 each and are massively better than Agua Verde ever has been. Now that Agua Verde is also ripping people off...likely a result of a poorly thought out decision by owners who are either new, greedy, or both. Fortunately, being Seattle, there are alot of really good choices so we'll pursue those, I don't see myself eating here ever again.

Pros: uh...used to be good??

Cons: bad service, no parking, overpriced very average fare, snotty wait staff, understaffed in general

.

This is easily the best food, and most fun spot in town. The massive crowds are because the food is so good. Don't let a severely depressed / deranged person influence your decision - lettuce dude is a moron. . Anyone that drinks juice rather than the best margi's in town should never have been allowed in the door :)

I unwillingly went to this place with friends, wanting to give them a second chance. The wait was huge as usuall. Something I am happy to overlook if the food is fresh and the service is good. The chips were obviously from a bag, the gucamole tasted frozen and they charge you extra if you want chips &guacamole and salsa..I didn't ask for salsa but was still charged 3 dollars for it. The "fresh" juice I recieved was indeed canned when I asked.. and the food was completely overpriced for what it was. Next time I feel like waiting for Mexican food that delievers on quality and freshness I will head to La Carta in Ballard.

I visited Seattle in September 2007 with my mom to visit my brother. He took us to a lot of different places; a mall in Bellevue, a nice restaurant there, too. Then on a Saturday, I think it was, he brought us to a quaint little Spanish restaurant. I was a little skeptical at first because of the name, it means "green water" in Spanish and the inside of the restaurant was different. But once we sat down and started to order our food, I felt better about the place. It took me a while to decide what to get, but I'll never forget what i ordered; seafood enchiladas with rice and beans and it had the most fantastic sauce over the enchiladas. It was quite a large portion and I regret not taking the rest of it with me. It was the best thing I've ever had! If I didn't live all the way on the East Coast, I would go there every chance I get.

Maybe i expected too much due to the reviews. The food was alright but nothing jaw dropping. However, the thing that will keep me from going back (even if the food was amazing) is that there was a maggot crawling in my friend's plate! Luckily they didn't charge us but it creeps me out to this day.

The only reason to go here is if you're hungry after kayaking and desperate. Try another place because the service is so-so, and the food is dry and subpar.

After reading all the reviews here we nearly passed, but decided to try Agua Verde as soon as it opened on a Saturday morning (11 am). Obviously there was no crowd. We found service to be fine, especially considering that they took our order then delivered it to the table - then we were on our own. No checking in, no bus help. It's OK - we're a self-sufficient group. We liked the catfish tacos better than the chicken and found their homemade salsas delicious. No problem eating with a toddler. We just grabbed a high chair for him. I guess the trick's to be the first ones through the doors and leave before the throngs arrive. Note that they had a local review posted for their staff with "waiting for your waiter" highlighted. It appears they're working on the issues.

Great taco plates with tasty fillings including smoked salmon, grilled halibut, deep fried cod, grilled shrimps and the usual meat fillings. All dishes come with an unusual looking green rice that has a delicious chicken broth flavor with just the right amount of spice added. The beans are refried black beans. Cheese is nowhere to be seen! If there were ever a healthy way to eat Mexican foood, this place is it!

House margaritas are made with heavy pours and are a perfect accompaniment to a relaxing meal by the lake.

love it, love it, love it!! I go here all the time - while the line can sometimes be really long at lunch, they are fast and the food is great for the price. they have a ton of selections, and have some good vegetarian options (vegan if u get no cheese) and most things are safe for my gluten intolerance. I like the back seating area and if you go at dinner, the service is super fast! My fav is the yam tacos, yummy! Go!!

I liked that Aqua Verde had choices that I could not get at other Mexican/Hispanic restaurants. I had exotic fish tacos the first time I went and some sort of chipotle yam patties the next. Very tasty and filling. I look forward to trying other items on the menu. Good for experimentation... also lots of choices of salsa that are fresh and excellent. The service was warm and appropriate. In the summer they rent out boats to tour the water. It can take up to hours to get a boat but it is worth it. This is a must try restaurant!

I was lucky enough to try Agua Verde on a very atypical warm winter day. The restaurant was packed but we still managed to find a seat outside and received our food relatively quickly. Everything was fresh, tasted great and extremely well priced. Parking, however, is tough so I think I'll wait for another sunny day before trying it again.

I loved the food and drinks at Agua Verde, but I have one major complaint. We went on a crowded night and waited over 45 minutes for a table. The service was lightning-fast and attentive, but almost too much so. Within 20 minutes we had been served our food, with a server visiting us every few minutes and making us feel rushed. Within 30 minutes of sitting down, we were being asked directly to leave and finish our drinks standing outside at the bar. Call me crazy, but I think you should be allowed to sit at a table for at least as long as you wait for it! I can't imagine going back.

Not only do I love the fact that Agua Verde uses a lot of good quality, free-range meats, but I also enjoy the fact that (and this shouldn't be a surprise to my readers), the horchata is FABULOUS! Horchata fresa is also an option, even though I prefer the regular stuff. I love to come here and pick up mango quesadillas, and salmon burritos. You'll love it too. I had put it off for too long, and now I frequent this place as though someone has announced that it will close. Thankfully it won't, and for that I am happy!

Also..if you hadn't caught the episode, Rachael Ray featured this restaurant on her Seattle visit for "$40 a day". Hurray for good publicity!

because of the fact that you can rent kayaks here as well....makes it convenient to do something fun...just don't drink too much and go out on the lake! the food here is average to above average, but perhaps i should get more creative in trying new things instead of the same thing everytime. anyways...parking stinks here.....walk or bike if possible!

I enjoyed the food. It was quite fresh tasting for being inexpensive. Be wary their can be lines and sometimes this small place can get crowded, but well worth it for the great tacos. The Pollo is my favorite with the cranberry slaw. Margaritas are excellent. Great food!

The food was just ok. A good deal, I guess becuase I didn't pay much. But our server only was around to take our orders and deliver our food. THEN, after we had paid, he has the audacity to come out to the front of the restaurant and tell us that we didn't give him a big enough tip! We didn't even order alcohol or get attention from him. I've been to this place a few times now over the past years and it has never once failed to please me. The grilled catfish tacos taste fresh and the accompaniments you can choose, such as the cumin-spiced black beans, are also great. People tend to get a little overwhelmed come dinnertime when the restaurant gets packed and the wait can often be around 45 minutes--I recommend grabbing a margarita from the front counter while you're waiting and finding a seat on the outside waiting deck which also offers a great view of Portage Bay and the kayakers.

I stopped by for lunch today, on the early side, around 11:30am and that proved to be a good thing. This place can get quite busy. Food was good without being outstanding, but the overall atmosphere makes this an enjoyable lunch spot. Bring a jacket because on a breezy day, it can be quite cool. They had parking available just around the corner for $1.00. I would say, if there is a long line or wait, you may want to choose elsewhere, but if you can time it for when it's slow, this is really a nice place to eat and not your typical Mexican fare. I had the spicy catfish tacos with an avocado sauce.

I had the spicy catfish tacos with an avocado sauce.

Pros: Patio, relaxed atmoshpere and location

Cons: Can be crowded and rushed

.

I used to love this place but the food has suffered the past couple of years. I don't know who died or left the place but the food is not worth the anxiety of the wait. Before I never noticed the nickel and diming but the fact that you pay for chips and salsa in addition to rice and beans is kinda weird. It's sad that they're on the downhill because there really isn't a good place to get good tacos besides a drive down to Kent.

Good place to sit in the summer to soak up the rays, if you're lucky enough to get a spot!

I remember when I was first introduced to Agua Verde back in college. I thought it was great -- the food, the atmosphere, and the service. After reminiscing about it many times, a friend who had never been (but had heard my raves) decided to go. What a disappointment! The service was nice, and we didnt have to wait long (this time), and the food came out quite quickly. The disappointment was mainly in the food. It was mediocre at best, and not worth going to again. We decided a better bet would be to get take-out some place else, and sit in the park by the water next time.

I've been here before and said, 'it's worth the bad service and the wait to get the good food'. I retract my statement as I am in shock over the horrible experience that we had there. The wait staff was not only rude, but condescending. The food was average at best. In the summer, the deck is lovely with the margaritas. I will not return there again as I refuse to be degraded. We did not have unreasonable wishes. We did not deserve to be scolded. In addition, we were slapped with a 15% Gratuity for a party of 6 or more. I added a to go order and specifically asked for it to be on a separate check. They added the order to the check and added the 15% gratuity to the take out as well. Unbelieveable. But, then again, what do you expect from such an establishment?

Where else can you eat wonderful, fresh food for cheap right on Lake Union and then rent a kayak right below? They are great for kayak rentals - they help you learn how to use one and it is very reasonably priced. Lake Union is just beautiful and being out on a kayak on it is the best way to get a feel for it.

The food is really great as well. I love the yam tacos and the the mango quesadilla the best, but everything is really yummy. It has a fun atmosphere, and a heated outdoor patio during the cold months. When the weather is nice the patio is always full (it is unheated then, of course). It is also very vegetarian friendly.

Pros: Inexpensive, Great tasting food, quality

Amazing food and scenery and easy on the wallet -- fantastic place to bring out-of-town guests for a very casual meal overlooking the kayakers & houseboats.

The service and the rules have always been a problem -- but the food used to be worth it. Not any more. If it wasn't hard to run a good restaurant with delicious, well-prepared food and a nice view, I guess everyone would do it. Agua is not doing it any more, at all. The food quality has really gone downhill in the past couple of years. They're too busy, and they don't make the food a high enough priority. Maybe take some of the workers off Rules Patrol and put them on Quality Control instead.

Well i suppose i am disagreeing with most of the people on here...but agua verde is my favorite restaurant ever! My mom and i live 45 minutes away from seattle and we come up once or twice a week to eat there. I love there halibit tacos and the serving size is perfect for me, im 17 and i have never heard a complaint about their food and i have taken many people here. Trust me..if you are willing to wait 15 (the most ive ever waited) minutes and take a few extra to find parking this place is amazing!!

We have waited soooo long a few too many times for average food. Parking can also be quite a challenge and there is no service whatsoever.

I've been here many times and the food has always been wonderful! The prices are great too. I've also rented a kayak here and had a great experience as well.
The last time we went we had a horrible service experience. They might not have had enough servers for the night but still it was bad. We were on the outside patio and had a "outside type" black table with holes in it. The server refilled my water too high and it actually spilled on my legs. I didn't say anything but overall it just was a bad experience.

PROS: Great food, great location, great prices!
CONS: Possible bad service

Yeah the wait can be long, and maybe the staff has been less than cordial, but the food is always tasty and fresh. This is not really a place to take a large group, but my husband and I have always gotten in within fifteen minutes for dinner when it's just the two of us. I don't agree with the responses that have complained about serving sizes. I have always left satisfied. Try the smashed potatoes and the black beans sides if you think you can't fill up on three tacos. Everything I have tried there is delicious. Of course try the fish tacos, but after that try the yam tacos they're great.

This little gem just below the Ave in the U-district is a hot summer spot. You can sit outside on the deck with a waterfront view while enjoying affordable fabulous margaritas and healthy Mexican food--Yucatan style. That said, some things are better than others on the menu. Stick to the open-faced tacos, Agua Verde's specialty. The "tacos de boniato," a vegetarian taco with sweet potatoes, sauteed peppers and onions, and a creamy avocado sauce are to die for. The generic tortilla chips leave something to be desired, but the section of salsas at the self-serve salsa bar make up for it--don't miss the chipotle variety. If the margaritas haven't taken too strong a toll, you can even go down the steps to rent a kyak and enjoy the water at a closer distance.

PROS: inexpensive, waterfront view, great food and drink
CONS: Potentially long wait for dinner

#1 All people must be present before they will seat your group.
#2 You can wait for your group on the patio.
#3 You can order drinks and chips at the counter.
#4 You must pay for chips even if you're waiting for a table.
#5 If you are pregnant and starving you can order a take out appetizer instead.
#6 You must order and pay inside but then wait outside at the take out window.
#6 You cannot eat this appetizer on the patio.
#7 Three employees must be aggressively rude in telling you this after.
#8 The staff cannot make any exceptions to any of the above rules even if you are part of a group spending well over $300 on dinner and drinks.

I am assuming due to its popularity the staff considers themselves exempt from the concept of customer service.

When my food came I was suprised at how small the portions were. I assumed that $8 would get me: three "full-sized" tacos as advertised! Yet when my food arrived, the taco filling for one normal sized taco had just been spread across three TINY Tortillas. Also, I only got about 12 chips and an inch-wide watermelon wedge. NOT my idea of a good value. Also, I overheard a person next to me attempt to get more chips, and he was told that he had to pay if he wanted any more. Although it was tasty it was hardly filling. I would have needed two plates to have a filling lunch. I won't be going back there any time soon!
