I live in South Holland and I love shopping at Waltz. I had only one bad experience but I reported the employee. My son was about 9 years old and one day we stopped in the store and an employee reported to security that he was running around writing on boxes with a marker. To make a long store short I challenged her to shop me the tape because he was walking with me the entire time. I also informed her that I was insulted because I am a home owner in that community and shop in that store 2 or 3 times a week. I also confronted her in the managers presents and told her that if I had not been in the store with him she probably would have my african american 9 yr old son in a room harassing him. While we were standing there several african american young boys bypassed us and she stated maybe it wasn't your son. I told the manager that I was embarassed and insulted and her apologizing was not sufficient. That incident did not stop me from shopping there because she is only one individual person with a flaw. I love the atmosphere and the clean environment. I even love the senior citizen that they hire to bag the grocery.

One 30ish female cashier at the Walts grocery store in South Holland, IL, is routinely rude to me. She has asked me (while walking thru the store or going to her cashier station as I entered the store) why I was buying certain products and what I was going to do with them. She also has hassled me about my using good coupons clipped from the Sunday paper. I bought 3 different products from the same company and had 3 coupons, 1 for each product. She said I could only use 1 coupon for company per visit. The coupons did not say this at all. A store manager was walking by and told her to allow me to use the 3 different coupons for 3 different products. When I got home, she had not given me the total amount off (it was $1 off a carton of bath tissue or one free roll of bath tissue. She gave me the coupon value off for only the free roll.) I did not go back to complain about such a small amount, but it soured me on this store. I live nearby and have shopped here for years, as has my family. The same cashier also gives me dirty looks when I ask for my groceries to be put in paper bags double bagged so they don't break. Paper bags are larger and easier for me to carry inside. The same cashier has also made negative comments about my using coupons for sale items or reduced items.

I also no longer buy dairy products (except cheese, yogurt and cream cheese and eggs that don't spoil easily) at this store. They do not have milk products behind closed doors. Their milk products turn sour after a couple days, no matter what the date is. I have taken a few back and complained, (and get dirty looks, etc. from customer service), but I usually just throw the products out. Now, I buy milk items at other stores (I am not talking about milk items from the reduced dairy bin, but items off the shelves). If a milk item is on sale (not reduced, but in the flyer) on the shelf, I found it usually turns bad in a day or so. This is especially true for milk, half and half and cottage cheese.

I still shop there because sometimes I don't feel like driving further to another store. And, they do have good buys. And, there are other cashiers and employees who are very nice there. And, I like how the store is not so huge that I get a back ache just walking around. Their selection is not as good as some other stores, but is good. Their prices are good. The store is clean. I like how they have reduced yogurt, cream cheese, cheese, butter, eggs and bakery products (I won't buy other reduced dairy like milk, half and half and cottage cheese since it is always spoiled). Their reduced berries are always spoiled too. Most of their reduced veggies/fruit is good though, and it is nice they offer this to their customers.

So, I still shop there, but try to avoid the cashier from hell in the store and at the checkout and buy milk, half and half and cottage cheese at other stores. And, I buy sensitive products at other stores since I don't feel like being grilled about them at the checkout (incontinence pads, etc.) with everyone behind hearing this. I also will continue to use coupons there, in spite of most of the cashiers not liking to take them. Most roll their eyes and make faces. There is no reason to do this. MAnagement needs to talk to the cashiers about being more pleasant.

Since I've moved to the area, Walt's has become my favorite grocery store. They have good prices and I've always found the staff to be very helpful. They're not just teenagers, housewives or retirees that are just there to collect a paycheck. They put the "service" in customer service. I like the fact that they also have the smaller portions of ground chuck available in the butcher shop. I'm a single male, so I'm just cooking for myself more often than not and I really don't need a big package of ground beef.
Their bakery also has the best glazed doughnut holes. If you want them, though, you have to get there before 5PM. Otherwise, you'll most likely be out of luck.

Pros: Good prices, helpful staff, great butcher shop

Cons: There are none

James M from the butcher shop is a fabulous human being. The kindest and most passionate butcher I have ever met. He knows his meat. What a wonderful store.

I shop at Walt's all the time and find the employees very helpful. They have fantastic prices and a great selection. They make Jewel and Dominicks look very bad. Their customer service is great. I also have had to ask the Management questions and they have been extremely helpful. If you don't shop at Walt's you are paying too much.

OK so I've worked here for about a year and its a decent place....decent. i have to say though, the person described (No--en) is a lady who needs to get something because she has been there so long that they just wont fire her, even if she is rude and disrespectful...its because no one has the balls to complain to the courtesy booth about her. and most of the cashiers are nice, its customers like you that make our day horrible and make us hate our jobs. case 1: a fellow employee was getting off after an 8 hour day and was getting her drawer to go home and a customer was pissed that she was leaving, I'm sorry but you wouldn't stay at your job of 8 dollars an hour to cater to other rude people. I'm sorry if its busy but we try our best to get you out as fast and as possible. sorry if you don't have enough time to stand in line but don't blame it on us when we are doing our job

I came in to post my experience and am not surprised to see previous reviews stating they had bad experiences. I was just at Walt's running in for a quick shopping trip on a break from work. My experience was not once-but four times, I was cut off by an employee of the store. Whether pushing shopping carts, bakery carts, or simply walking through the store, nothing makes your customer feel less valued than a rude employee pushing in front of them. Add to the the golden rule "The customer is always right", paragraph 2 "The customer always has the right of way".

I have not been to Walts, but from reading these reviews I will not go, I am so sick of rude people. As far as shopping at Jewel & Dominicks, thats a negative, their prices are ridiculous. Go to Super Tonys in Berwyn, super good prices and the people that work there are decent.

I agree that the sale prices are pretty good- in fact I drove out of my way today in order to pick up a few things I saw in the flyer. Everything went well until I got to the checkout where the checker (No---n) treated me as if I were invisible. She never so much as spoke to me even though I did greet her. All she did was take my money and hand me my change- not even a "thank you". This store could have kept me as a regular customer but because of this one person's near rudeness I will probably not return. Maybe they don't need my business. Dominicks and Jewel have the friendly and courteous employees that will keep me going back to spend my money.

Walt's is a small grocery store that takes you back to the days before super stores. I love the small atmosphere and the great prices that they have. I look up their ads online weekly to see what is on sale!
