First and most important, see the medical boards reviews of Dr. Burch. Even after hes warned and reprimanded as impaired to practice medicine with reasonable skill and safety, then it gets worse. Hes cited as a danger to the public and suspended. Ongoing cocaine and alcohol and methamphetamine abuse, illegally writing prescriptions for controlled substances and putting patients in danger, and more. Second, see reporter Joce Stermans ABC7 focus on Dr. Burch: Doctors Under the Influence. Violent criminal guilty convictions for assault, stalking, threats (yes, the crimes also involving drugs) on multiple occasions, terrorizing and devastating his victim and family for more than three years, and then just abandoning his patients. My own experience is that Dr. William A. Burch is not a very good ob-gyn. My visits with him were mostly unpleasant and not very professional. He is a mediocre doctor at best. He seems full of himself; based on checking his background, he has no reason to be. Its like even on his better days, its fake smiles and friendliness and he acts like he knows what hes doing, until you ask questions or voice your opinion about anything. Then hes defensive flustered testy and bad-tempered. There should be a category for negative stars because Dr. Burch has done plenty to merit a very negative rating.

Thankfully, finally, the Virginia medical board took some action against Dr. Burch. The Board issued a public Reprimand for his cocaine and alcohol abuse, noting him being impaired to practice medicine with reasonable skill and safety, his mental health issues, and highlighting his horrific violent crimes: stalking, threats, assaults, etc. http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/Notices/Medicine/0101241845/0101241845Order09182014.pdf
Based on multiple visits with him, Dr. Burch most definitely is not a consistent, reliable, ethical professional. Whatever his good sides may be, every encounter with him is a wild-card: You never know what youre going to get. Now at least we know part of the reasons why. Thank you Virginia medical board.

I do not believe that Dr. Burch has proper bedside manors at all. After my yearly he couldn't wait to tell me how I need to recommend all my friends to him; because he has money problems. Then surprise, surprise my pap came back abnormal. Which I've never had, I believe he was trying to over charge me. Then when I went back it was AKWARD when I walk into my room to find his farther in the room. "Just walking around." However the icing on the cake is that I live close to him in DC and received a letter to all neighbors to beware... It is shocking to find out that Dr. Burch has several recent violent criminal convictions (stalking, death threats, assaults, etc. Case 2013-DVM-829 D.C. Courts Online) and admitted to using illegal drugs during his criminal activities. Is this someone you'd want as your OB? Not me.

I most definitely think the 5 star reviews are fake. When I had my first consult with him (just to meet him), he was great and spent a lot of time with me. Every other visit I had with him, I had a negative experience. I walked out his office more nervous/confused than when I came in. He does not seem to know his stuff. "Well it's your choice," he would say...instead of giving medical guidance. I am horrified to read about his criminal/drug/stalking past. Search for his name on: dccourts.gov/cco/ He also went to Med school out of the States (this info is NOT posted on his website) but if you search his name you will see it.) I believe it was somewhere in in one of the Islands. To me, not attending med school in USA is a bit of a red flag too. I am on the search for a new doctor.

I was an OB patient of Dr. Burch for my pregnancy with my third child. My first appointment with him went fine. He was attentive, nice, and friendly. He seemed thorough with his questions during this appointment and very happy.

As the pregnancy progressed, he was still friendly, but too quick (<5 min appointments), distracted, and never once measured me or touched my belly except to put the fetal HB monitor on me. I started scheduling my appointments with his wonderful nurse practitioner because she seemed so much more engaged and was "present" during the appointments.

Late one evening, when I was 34 weeks and 5 days along and had very serious indications that I needed to rush to the hospital for my baby. On the way to the hospital, we called his office repeatedly, but the answering service never picked up. We went to the ER and my baby was delivered via emergency C-section by a very competent on-call OB doc within the hour.

The following afternoon, Dr. Burch stopped by my hospital room for a lengthy visit and that was the last I saw of him during my 5 day stay. He was supposed to do the circumcision on my son (upon release) who was in the NICU, but was "not able to be reached" when the time came.

One week after I left the hospital, in the middle of the afternoon, I became lethargic, feverish, had a headache and suddenly began to bleed a great deal. I tried to call Dr. Burch again, but luckily, this time at least an answering service picked up. Another doctor returned the call and instructed me to head to the ER immediately. Still no Burch. I had a D&C and was admitted for another couple of days on heavy antibiotics for a severe infection. Still no Burch.

The day after I was released, I scheduled an appointment at his office and when I arrived to see him they said he wasn't available and I was ushered into a room with the wonderful NP again. I asked to see him directly, so he quickly leaned in the doorway for <60 seconds and assured me that I was fine (without even looking at my hospital records or talking to me at all) and he then had to run (something about his car). His behavior was erratic, his clothes were crumpled and he was clearly stressed out. He completely dismissed the hospital stay I had just had. No answers or examination.

Several days later, I began to bleed heavily again and called his office on my way to the hospital ER again , but he recommended that I come to his office instead. That was when we fired Dr. Burch.

My ordeal began on Jan 8, 2014. As I understand, he was experiencing some very heavy personal issues at the time and my health was not a priority. I am thankful to have been taken care of by a number of other wonderful doctors at Virginia Hospital Center. I sincerely hope that he has sorted out his issues and is back on track being the great doctor others have professed him to be. I was very shaken, disappointed, and felt abandoned, to say the least. Now, in hind sight, I'm glad that he wasn't available the night of my son's delivery or things may have turned out differently for my baby. God is so good!

Terrible, horrible, scary experience. Left me scarred and traumatized, physically and emotionally. And I checked it out - it's all true - as other reviewers also have unfortunately realized after the fact: Dr. William (Will) A. Burch is a convicted, multiple, violent criminal offender. He was convicted of Stalking, Threats (including death threats), and multiple counts of Assault, and was sentenced in D.C. Superior Court on January 16, 2014. Dr. Burch tested positive for, and was forced to confess using, cocaine during his crime spree, which included targeted, repeated, and increasingly violent attacks that culminated in his arrest by the D.C. police and his being charged by the U.S. Attorney's office. Dr. Burch was convicted and found guilty on all criminal charges. Case DVM-2013-829, Judge: Jose M. Lopez, Prosecutor: Assistant U.S. Attorney M.J. Marando, D.C. Dont waste your time or your health on this doctor. The office staff is poorly managed, the doctor charges fees for anything you can imagine, and he doesn't want to spend the time to listen to his patients. I must say he puts on a friendly first visit nice doctor show but every visit since then was awful! In the waiting room you can hear the staff talking about patients and being very inappropriate. That was the icing on the cake for me. DON'T GO! I found a new Gyno down the road which I'm very happy with.

Dr. Burch is a gifted surgeon, knowledgeable doctor and a true patient advocate. He will explain and discuss at your level of comfort, always making sure you leave his clinic in BOTH physical and mental comfort. He has EXCELLENT bedside manners and will put away his lunch bag for a patient, accessible anytime anyday! his staff Joy and Brenda share the same passion and commitment attending to patients. It's great to be in a clinic where people know and LOVE WHAT THEY DO.

Great doctor. You can not go wrong with Dr. Burch. I found Dr. Burch, to be one of if not the most compasion physican I have ever meet. He is knowledgeable and very family and patient oriented. I would not hesitate to recommend him to other friends and family

I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Burch and his staff. He is extremely kind, patient, and knowledgeable. He takes the time to talk to his patients and provides multiple treatment option . I never had a problem getting in touch with him or his office. Sometimes he even answers the phones himself!

He performed my hysterectomy last month and I haven't had any problems at all. All the surgical staff at the hospital who talked to me prior to my surgery had nothing but praise for him. If a surgical nurse provides unsolicited praise for a physician, then I take that as a good sign he knows what he's doing.

If you need a new doctor, don't hesitate to make an appointment!

First, let me state that I have never written a doctor review but just could not let someone go through a similar experience if I could help it. So, for anyone who is considering Dr Burch please read.

A couple of days after learning I was pregnant, I miscarried and due to the convenience of Dr. Burch??s walk-in office appointments, I saw Dr. Burch the following day. After performing a painful vaginal evaluation and taking blood, Dr. Burch informed me that the ovaries and tubes felt smooth and proportionate and the cervix was closed, which according to him means the miscarriage was complete. Following a miscarriage, beta levels should drop relatively rapidly. We established a plan to monitor beta levels until they reached zero.

While my first beta test did drop, the second blood tests rose. Dr Burch told me not to worry that it was probably a lab error. Two days later, we reran my beta blood work with results more than doubling every 48 hours as if I was pregnant. I voiced my concern and asked if he or his colleagues had ever had a similar case. When the answer was no, I politely asked if we should consult a high-risk OB or bring another physician with experience in odd beta patterns in the loop. With this suggestion, Dr. Burch became very defensive and insisted that he was the best with published works and that a high-risk would tell me the exact same thing as him. He offered me two options: a D&C or we could continue to safely monitor the levels until they reached a much higher level. Not feeling totally comfortable with either option, I requested an ultrasound, which showed a normal uterus. So, we decided to wait and continue to monitor the blood levels.

Two days after the ultrasound, I started experiencing pelvic and abdominal pain with any movement. I called Dr. Burch??s main office line expecting to hear directions how to reach the doctor after hours but I only received their regular recorder with no after hour directions or numbers. After calling a few times, I left a message on the only available recorder and assumed that it was linked to his cell phone (given that it is illegal to not have some form of after hour service).

An hour later, my husband drove me to the hospital. My blood pressure was extremely high due to the severe pain. The amazing ER doctor quickly examined me and immediately stated that I was bleeding internally. He hooked me up to several IVs, made arrangements for a blood transfusion (if needed) and sent me for an emergency ultrasound, which showed internal bleeding with questions of the condition of the ovaries/tubes. The ER/hospital records showed that within one minute of receiving the ultrasound results the ER called Dr. Burch and noted Dr Burch had no answering service. After no way to reach Dr. Burch, the record showed the ER doctor immediately notified the hospital on-call OB, she accepted me as her patient, and admitted me into the hospital due to an ectopic pregnancy rupture. They prepared us that it was very likely we would have to go into emergency surgery given the situation but we would try to wait until the day shift.

We made it through the night with no surgery and no word from Dr. Burch. I did not hear from him until late afternoon. The discussion of his call was shocking. His only concern was hearing me state that he did not put me in harm and that he had informed me that at any moment this could happen and that he was going on vacation so please let him know whatever happens and next time to notify his after hour services. I was so upset and felt totally and completely abandoned by Dr. Burch. The nurse saw how upset I was and actually shared the incident with my Hospital OB doctor who made a special trip to my room to discuss the issue and eliminate Dr. Burch from my care. This was the last time I heard from Dr. Burch himself. I did hear from Joy after I was released saying that maybe the power went out and that was why the after hours system failed?

I was monitored in the hospital for about four days and sent home with pain meds and instructions that it would take 6-8 weeks for my body to fully reabsorb all of the ??loose? blood. I am now with an excellent high-risk OB, Dr. Bathgate, who is still dealing with the aftermath of the ectopic rupture.

To top everything off, a few days after my release from the hospital, my husband picked up my records from both the hospital and Dr. Burch??s office. Dr. Burch??s records clearly misstated the facts and even went as far to state that I understood I could die from my condition (even though at that time he did not know what my condition was nor did he want to consult with anyone else). The kicker to his records?he stated that the patient NOR the Emergency Department called him. The real scary part of his record was that there was no mention of any bleeding issues or inability to clot.
