I had never been to a spa before I was given a gift certificate to Burke Williams Day Spa. Now, I am hooked. This is a world class spa with seven or eight locations right in the Los Angeles area. A visit to Burke Williams starts the minute you walk in the lobby. Soothing music and fragrant smells greet you. The attendants at the counter smile and discuss your service with you. There are many types of massages, facials, body wraps, nail care, hair care and special water room treatments only offered at Burke Williams. You are then led back to the spa (either Men's or Women's side -- no coed facilities except the lounge area). You are given a locker with a lock and a fluffy robe and slippers. When you have a massage or facial, you are allowed full use of their spa facilities which include dry sauna, hot tubs, steam, etc. There are amenties galore (lotions, shampoos, towels, razors, etc.,) so you don't have to bring anything with you. I love their water, too (with cucumber and orange). There is a "qu
Although there are thousands of nail salons in the Los Angeles area, I discovered this gem when I was shopping at a nearby hardware store. As a man, I just get a basic manicure, nothing fussy here. I walked in off the street and Kim was just finishing another customer. She smiled and welcomed me to her salon. She pretty much runs the place by herself with one other helper during the week. She is very friendly and, although an immigrant, is extremely well-spoken in English. She does a wonderful job on your nails. She is thorough and pays attention to detail. The best part, I must admit, is the lengthy arm massage you get after your treatment. Frankly, I would pay just for that! Although I don't get there as often as I would like, I do look forward to a visit with Kim.
A wonderful discovery on Third Street, between La Cienega and Fairfax. This book store specializes in travel books from all over the world. They have a massive collection of maps, guides and travelogues, as well as other travel-related materials. Theemployees are very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Any time I've come in to look for something specific, they inevitably assist me in finding something additionally helpful. Anyone planning a trip out of the country (or out of the state) should head to Travelers Bookcase where you'll find a treasure trove of great travel books. And even if you're not going anywhere, it's a great browsing store.
I first discovered this office on a circular in the mail. I decided to try them since they are located near to me. I was delighted to find Dr. Goncharov and his staff to be of the highest quality. The staff is welcoming and patient. They were able to squeeze in (on a subsequent occasion) at the last minute for an emergency. Dr. Goncharov is very patient and thorough and calmly explains everything he is doing, or needs to do. I would highly recommend this office to anyone seeking a new dentist, oranyone seeking to change. Russian is spoken here (not that I needed it!).
Although there are many 99 Cent branches through Los Angeles, this one at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue is the best. It seems to have the best selection (as evidenced by the large crowds). As the name implies, there is nothing over 99 cents here, and many of the items are actually two or three for 99 Cents. This is a combination grocery store, hardware store and drug store. All sorts of toiletries, cleaning supplies, paper goods, and hardware can be found, as well as many food supplies. I will admit I am hesitant about buying a lot of food here as they have no problem selling outdated products (check the label always). But if that doesn't bother you, happy shopping!
One of my favorite grocery stores, Trader Joe's at the corner of LaBrea and 3rd Street has a wide variety of foods and spirits. The prices here are amazing. They carry a large quantity of frozen and refrigerated prepared foods which are delicious. The staff is very helpful and is more than willing to find anything you're looking for, as well as making great recommendations. There is plenty of parking, although I try to avoid it at prime after-work hours as it can get very crowded. There are manyother locations of Trader Joe's throughout Los Angeles as well.
A wonderful beverage store located in the ground floor of a mini-mall which includes Target, Best Buy, Starbucks and various fast food eateries. This place has terrific values on wine and spirits. They have a wide variety of cheeses and snacks, as well. But the most interesting part of the store is the selection of old-fashioned sodas in bottles. There are many brands I hadn't seen since childhood (NeHi Grape and Orange, Frosty Root Beer, etc.). They also have popular flavors such as Dr. Pepper in the bottle. This is a great place to browse and buy. Highly recommended!
Arons is one of the best record stores ever. Unlike the larger chain stores, Arons is a small, compact store that is suitable for hours of browsing. Their collection is very eclectic, covering the latest hits to music from movies and the theater to international. There is a very large selection of used tapes at very reasonable prices. They also gladly buy back used tapes and vinyl albums for either cash or store credit. This is a terrific store! There is ample parking adjacent to the store.
Samuel French Books is a wonderful bookstore for anyone interested in books on the stage, screen or television. The employees are very resourceful and can locate any play or film script for you quickly. They have a very large supply of technique bookssuch as acting, writing, directing, etc. They sell music books as well. It is a great store for browsing. I could browse for hours throughout their extensive collection. There is also a branch in Sherman Oaks with a similar selection.
I can't say enough about this terrific car wash. I don't even live in the Valley but I make a special trip since they clean your car both inside and out for a very reasonable price. In fact, the employees work so hard, the inside is almost as sparkling as the outside! There is a nice space to sit and relax and wait while they do your car. A real bargain for your money.
