Pump
Everything they say about the Pump is true: A bit bland and slightly expensive. But if you're looking for filling, healthy, no-guilt take out, go no further. Secret: Register at their website, and they'll send you terrific coupons.
Mombar
Mombar is terrific not only for the food -- which is more inventive, tastier, and more interesting than anything you'd ever get in Cairo -- but also for the decor (Mostapha made all the furinture himself) and the warm welcome. The food isn't cheap, but when you factor in the deliciousness and the uniqueness, it's actually a bargain. DEFINITELY worth the trip to Astoria!
Taverna Kyclades
Lots of Greek places in Astoria, true, and many of them have fish, yes. But Kyclades is, hands down, the best. Most of their fish is simply prepared, but it is the best, freshest, most excellent cuts you will find anywhere. The swordfish steak is literally the best I've had anywhere, and it's easily big enough for 2 people. The decor isn't much, but the fish makes this joint worth the trip.
Brick Cafe
Brick has all the ingredients of a successful local joint -- great and HUGE cocktails, tasty food, nice vibe -- with the added benefit of being a pleasant place to eat (outside) during better weather. While some of their dishes are 50/50 (our fish last night was overcooked), the majority of the menu hits home every time.
The Rock Health & Fitness Club
The bottom line is this: If this gym is convenient to you (and maybe if it's a little inconvenient!), there is nowhere else you should think about belonging! All the perks of the best gyms (towel service, climbing wall, daycare, personalized attention, locker rental, open 24 hours) for the price of NYSC. This is what makes the Rock, er, rock: They have all the good stuff (including palm trees!), with a personal touch, at a decent price. Get thee to the Rock!
PROS: Personalized Service, Excellent Facilities
CONS: Location (unless you live in Astoria)
