Have you ever been to Jamaica and came home craving for some jerk chicken? Look no more. Island Chicken is the Jamaican restaurant for the south suburbs. They serve the best jerk chicken. However, my favorite is the citrus chicken with rice. The restaurant has good side items such as sweet slaw and fried plaintains. The atmosphere is pleasant and the prices are reasonable.
Moo & Oink is well known on the south side of Chicago during the major holidays. What other place can you buy cleaned chitterlings, chicken wings and all kinds of other soul food. The location in Hazel Crest is a very clean and well stocked grocery store. Check out it's produce and meat departments for some excellent prices.
Angelica's makes the BEST cakes in the world. My favorite has to be her infamous caramel cake. You can purchase the cakes in 2 sizes. She also sells them by the slice. Other kinds include pineapple coconut, german chocolate, and many more. If you can't make it to her bakery, you can also find her cakes in stores such as Moo & Oink or Kenny's Ribs restaurants.
PROS: Cakes are soft and good
CONS: She stopped selling half cakes
Insight Awareness specializes in holistic approaches to healing. My mother suffered a stroke and I took here there for Reiki, which is similar to healing of the hands. The atmosphere is very relaxing and calming. While there, you can purchase aromotherapy items or pick up books on Reiki. The owner, John Starks, is very helpful and always makes an effort to make you feel comfortable. They also have hypnosis sessions there. However, I have not used that service.
PROS: Wonderful place to relax
CONS: May be a little pricey.
I enjoy going to United Nails and getting my nails done. The workers there are concerned about the health of your nails rather than getting you in and out. I have been told how to care for my nails and the length I should have them at to avoid lifting and infections.
The prices are reasonable and they always use good products and nice colors. OPI is the main brand they use.
CONS: Changes management often, so you will end up with different people
Children's Orchard is a wonderful store if you like buying used clothes for your tiny tot. The store has name brand items at very low, discounted prices. I recommend this store because children grow so fast. Why pay $50 for an outfit, when you can get the same outfit, like new, for $5! The store has a large inventory of baby clothes and usually has half priced sales. If you have old children's clothes you can go to Children's Orchard and sell them.
PROS: nice name brand clothes
Home Physicians specializes in bringing doctors to home bound patients. My mother has been using this service for 3 years. The facility will call you a day ahead of time to make an appointment with you. Doctors will then come by to do a routine check up. Visits are usually done monthly or as needed. Services provided are foot, wound and regular doctors. All the doctors who have come into our home are thorough and very friendly.
PROS: Quality service, usually on time
Heritage Health Food store specializes in holistic health, natural foods and spiritual growth. When you enter their store, you will see a small but informative collection of books to your right. You can browse the grocery store and find many products ranging from different flavored teas to whole wheat pasta. Their organic fruits and vegetables are located in the back of the store. Also, they have a great organic juice bar and will make your choice right there on the spot. I love going to this store and try to visit at least 3 times a week.
PROS: Great fruit juice, fine selections of fruits and vegetables.
Addus specializes in finding CNAs to come to your home if you are homebound or need a little help with day to day acitivites. The CNAs they send out will help with dressing you, cleaning your house and assisting you in going to the store, doctor, etc. I have used their services for a year and was very disappointed. I went through 8 CNS through this company. I have had folks eat my food, come 2 hours late to the job, or come for one day and quit. I would not recommend this service if your are bed bound, as my mother is. If you need light help, then this may work out for you.
Fitzsimmons is the premiere medical supply store in the southwest suburbs. The range of supplies goes from wheelchairs and hospital beds all the way to adult diapers and mouth swabs. Fitzsimmon's staff is friendly and well educated on what the store sells. They are ready to assist you as soon as you enter the door.
PROS: Responsible if you are looking for home care supplies
