i only give this store a satisfactory because it depends on
what kinds of books you like to read. This store tends to specialize in women's books such as the subjects of feminism, sexuality, and female biographies. However, part of the proceeds of these books go to help good causes, and they sometimes buy them back from students if they need them. Out on Hawthorne, go check it out!
PROS: small bookstore dedicated to helping people
CONS: a little bias in some of their subjects
this place is a serious book paradise. It takes up a full square block, is a tourist attraction, and you can find any book there! They even have rare out of print ones not available in other places. There is also a nice little coffee shop where you can sit and read your newfound purchase while sipping a latte or whatever. come on down and find out about this place! i even go here just to "window" shop.
PROS: very cool, seriously have every book
CONS: can get lost if you aren't careful
i go here for all my pet needs. The staff really seems to know what they are talking about, and seem much more attentive to you and your pets than other large mass-market stores. They also have pets to purchase, such as puppies, rabbits, rodents, lizards, fish, and all the accessories that go with them. Not to mention, sometimes they have good deals just because. I got a $5 goldfish for .99 just because he was trying to get rid of them!
PROS: happy people, healthy animals
okay, so you want to be wet-your-pants-scared, you got it! The 13th door is a themed haunted house in Tigard, open every year for the halloween season, and every year there is a different theme. It's pretty large in size, considering it's a reconstructed movie theater, and tickets are $15. It's also the longest running haunted house in town! Parents, you might not want to take any kids under 13, but if you do, you must accompany them. You'll want to anyway for your own safety!
PROS: lots of scary fun
this church on 11th avenue used to be an active church with a congregation, but now it's just rented out for weddings, concerts, and other events. It's a very lovely church for getting married in, which makes it more convenient because then you don't have to be counseled. At any rate, in the summer they have lunch time concerts, so brown-bag it and have fun!
PROS: quaint, cheaper than other places, convenient location
CONS: kind of looks like any other church
Let's face it. No one really likes the dentist. But Willamette Dental has so many locations, you won't have to schedule far ahead of time just to get in to see them. Of course, they do prefer that you stick to one location. Like all places, everyone is different. That includes dentists. One appointment I might get a really nice doctor with fabulous beside table, another, I might get one who thinks he's the one in the chair. At any rate, the cost isn't as great as it could be elsewhere. They have, however, just recently started charging a ten dollar co-pay just for coming in each time.
PROS: good locations, they do good work
CONS: it's the dentist's office
This shop is really cool! It sells all kinds of imports and things you can't get at other shops, of irish and celtic nature. Their jewelry is very unique, and very pretty. They also sell wedding and birth gifts. You can just walk around and listen to the irish music over the speakers, while you look at everything. It's definitely different, and definitely worth seeing. It's next door to the Hilton in downtown Portland.
PROS: unique gifts
CONS: not cheap
since there are, like, only two shops that sell ethnic beauty supplies in town, it's important to love both of them. One of them is Mid K beauty supply, and they have everything you could ever think of at very decent prices. Every kind of shampoo, hair oil, and accessories are sold at this store. Actually the other store, Living Color, has lots of supplies as well, but Mid K is a lot neater in appearence, and in a better location.
PROS: lots of supplies, good prices
CONS: neighborhood isn't so great, but just go in the daytime
this shop has everything you could ever want for your hair. They specialize in selling ethic hair products, but you can find anything . Hair bands, barettes, hair oils, sheens, lotions, you name it. Plus they sell other little knick knacks like jewelry and hats. You can also buy hair for weaves, synthetic and real, as well as equipment for straightening, curling, whatever. I swear, if you go in there, you won't leave without buying something!
PROS: really good prices, large variety
CONS: not a chain, and one of very few stores in ethnic products
This particular recreation center is only a few years old, and quite a nice facility. They have a huge pool with a giant waterslide, rooms to rent for birthdays, all kinds of classes from exercise to art, and day camps for kids on school holidays and in the summer. The center is also near the large Gabriel Park bordered by lots of beautiful trees.
PROS: variety of activities
CONS: may be a little pricier than other rec centers
