After reading all the praises, I decided to pay a visit to check this place out for myself. I visited the place twice, once during the week and once during the weekend at a different time (purposely).
The ambient was good and the serivce was attentive. Though, the layout could use some improvement. The restooms were fairly clean. One thing for sure is the bakery is any thing but European. It would be an insult to European bakeries if you call this store a European bakery. In fact, this establishment is owned and operated by Koreans. Their cakes are fairly acceptable but not all that great. After 5:00PM they run half-price on some of the cakes.
Nothing is special about their drink selection either. Overall it's a store that tries to appeal to the yuppie or yuppie wanna be. Located in the middle of the most expensive business district of Pasadena, Wheatberry is catreing to a specific clientele with its European flavored atmosphere. But the European flavor is definitely not in their breads or pasteries.
I would give this bakery a 2.5 stars. This bakery offers a limited variety of cakes and pasteries. It seems to specialize in wedding cakes. Some cakes are not bad but not that great either. Federico's seems to overload its cakes with sugar for some reasons. You could get a headach eating just two slices! The price is just a little on the high side. But considering the mediocre cake quality, it's really not worth it.
This is one of about nine stores in California. It offers the popular Vietnamese sandwiches and some dessert items. It is not a "sit-down" restaurant but is rather a take-out. A wide varieties of baguette-based sandwiches are offered at a price of about $1.50 each. If you buy three sandwiches, they'll throw in a full-size baguette! These baguettes are fresh baked at the location. While their sandwiches are OK, the pate chauds are not that great. They are much smaller than the standard pate chauds but cost only 50 cents each. Pate chauds come in pork or chicken fills. MSG is used in pate chauds.
Customer service quality isn't consistent: sometime you get good service, sometime you don't. As the store is located in the middle of the new "Chinatown" in San Gabriel valley, English isn't spoke much here. But at least the menu is in English with pictures.
If you have a problem with MSG (Monosodium Glutamate), then you should ask the manager which items don't have MSG. Unfortunately, the manager is hard to get a hold of and not very friendly.
PROS: Cheap sandwiches at an acceptable quality
CONS: Parking could be a problem. Inconsistent customer service quality
When one comes to Jamba Juice he/she would expect some kind of nutritious, and more importantly, clean products. Well, while the nutritious part is something up for debate, the "clean" part is definitely a serious problem at this "contracted" store. This store is operated by Whole Food supermarkets.
I often witnessed employees picking up dropped item and put it right back on the blender! This is not uncommon for unhappy staff, who generally don't want to be assigned to this particular department.
I am not sure how long it will take for Jamba Juice corporate office to yank its license. Perhaps they are waiting for a big law suit? Who knows. Meanwhile, I am not going to risk it at this Jamba Juice. A short walk across the street is a better run corporate-owned Jamba Juice located outside of Ralps SM.
PROS: convenient location (insde Whole Food supermarket)
CONS: insanitary, bad service, unhappy employee taking it out on customers
If you don't want to support corporate stores like Starbucks, this is a good place to hangout, have some coffee or tea, and surf the interenet for free (BYOC: bring your own computer with wi-fi). The owner Carl takes great pride in his store, keeping it sparkling clean. His staff are generally friendly and courteous. The coffee quality is acceptable. They do offer sandwiches and pasteries here. Some items on the menu are quite good.
PROS: Friendly atmosphere, good service, free wi-fi
CONS: a bit too small but efficient layout
First, Tempo service failed to show up on the promised time/date. Second when the serviceman finally showed up he immediately complained how old our AC was and tried to sell us a new one. Third, he messed up our AC making it completely usuable. Fourth, once the mess is created, they tried to charge us for fixing their original "mistakes". And lastly, the management was evasive and unreachable and irresponsible. They do not believe in "accountability" or "quality service".
It's a real pain dealing with this business. BBB is, as usual, not an effective avenue for dealing with bad businesses. As a test, call and ask to speak with the owner/manager. You'd be told "he's not in" (it's usually just a lie). NO ACCOUNTABILITY what so ever is expected from this lousy business!
CONS: bad service, no accountability, incompetent workers.
Coffee quality is nothing to die for. The store is small and tight on space. Serious navigation is needed just to go from the pickup counter to the cream/sugar station. Poorly managed and a strong sense of chaotic can be felt when the store is half full. Rude customer service comes standard here. Manager is never in the store. Beside bad customer service, the staff often violate health codes. But I guess the management doesn't care (until it get slapped wth a hefty fine).
What going for the store is its location. It enjoys the foot traffic from the adjacent popular Vroman's Bookstore.
CONS: bad customer service, poor management, insanitary
This is a Chinese-run store operating under a franchise license of a Vietnamese-owned company based in San Jose. The local management has practically destroyed the company's positive image with is sub-standard customer service and inconsistent food quality. Don't expect the usual and minimum courtesy you normally would expect from a fast food joint like Burger King. The only thing that seems to be consistent at this store is rudeness. I am not sure if it's a cultural thing or just these people.
PROS: Some menu items are acceptable, tastety, and reasonably inexpensive
CONS: Bad customer service, food quality is inconsistent
