The Bailey House Museum is the headquarters of the Maui Historical Society, which has turned the former mission house into a little museum. There is a Hawaiiana section with stone adzes, tapa, bottle gourds, calabashes and more, as well as period furnishings from the missionary days. Bailey was a painter and engraver and many of his works are on display. This museum would be great for visitors that are interested in Hawaiiana and the history of Maui and its missionaries. Our family really enjoyed this museum because it contained a lot of historical artifacts.
The Kaahumanu Church is the oldest Congregational church in Maui. The present building was built in 1876 by missionary Edward Bailey. Queen Kaahumanu visited Wailuku in 1832 and requested that the first church bear her name. Hymns are sung in Hawaiian at Sunday morning services. I would recommend this church to visitors that want to see the first Congregational church built in Maui. We stopped by at this historical church when we visited Wailuku just to take pictures. It is always open during the day.
Of all the hotels in Maui, Maui Palms Hotel and Maui Beach Hotel are older and lackluster, and the main attraction is the rates which have inched down in recent years. The Mauil Palms Hotel has 103 rooms and free shuttle service is provided from the airport if you reserve in advance. I would recommend this hotel and I would recommend using this hotel in a car/room package. We rented a room here las year using a car and room package which really lowered the room rate. What a deal!
Maui Seaside Hotel has two wings, a new wing and an older wing with lower priced rooms. The newer wing is a modern building with larger and more comfortable rooms. Rooms in both wings have air-conditioning, cable TV and small refrigerators. I would recommend this Hawaiian owned hotel to visitors looking for a no-frills hotel. I have also stayed at other Seaside Properties on other islands and it is basically the same at each location. This is a great hotel if you don't plan to be in the room all day and you are not looking for spectacular ocean views and luxury amenities.
Keawalai Congregational Church is one of Maui's early missionary churches. The current building was built in 1855 with three foot thick walls made of burnt coral rock. A small congregation still meets for Sunday services. This church is located near Big Beach. I would recommend this church to residents of Makena.
If you are looking for a store that sells quality beach equipment then this is the store to shop at. Located in Azeka Place II, this store sells reef walkers, boogie boards, snorkels, fins and wet suits. After you shop at this store you will be set to hit the beach. I would recommend this quailty store to visitors.
Kamaole Sands is its own condo city with 440 units in 10 four-story buildings. The units are very large and have modern amenities incuding cable TV, full kitchen, lanai, washer and dryer, two bathrooms and a living room with a sofa bed. The Kamaole Sands is directly across Kamaole Beach Park and has a pool, jacuzzi, tennis courts and a poolside restaurant. I would recommend this condominium to visitors that want all the amenities of a hotel. There is shopping at Wailea but unfortunately it is really expensive. If you need to buy groceries, you can simply go to Foodland which is about a 5 minute drive from the hotel. The beach in front of the hotel is wonderful and great for swimming or watching the sunset.
Koa Resort has 54 large, comfortable units spread over 5 1/2 acres. All are equipped with full kitchens, a waher and dryer, lanai, cable TV, etc. There are 2 tennis courts, a putting green, a spa and a large swimming pool. The minimum stay is four days. I would recommend this condominium to visitors looking for comfortable units with lots of hotel amenities.
Kihei Kai Nani is a friendly place with 180 low-rise apartments, about 30 which are rentals. All are one-bedroom units with full kitchens, ceiling fans, good-sized balconies and phones with free local calls. The decor varies with the unit, but most are pleasant for this price range. It has a pool, shuffleboard and barbecue grills, and there are restaurants and shops within walking distance. I would recommend this condo to visitors that want to be near restaurants and shops.
Kauhale Makai is also known as Village By the Sea. It is a six-story complex. NInety of the 160 condo units are vacation rentals. All units have lanais and the standard amenities such as kitchens, cabe TV and phones, and while the location is not special, the interiors are on par with many of Kihei's pricier condos. I would recommend this condo to visitors that are looking for value. It has a pool, sauna and tennis court. We stayed at Kauhale Makai a few years ago and were pleased because the property is well-maintained and clean. The pool was perfect because the beach fronting the hotel is rocky and it's not a really good beach to swim at like some of the beaches on the Kaanapali Coast. Also this hotel is very convenient because it is located in Kihei which is close to dining and shopping.
