Krishna Copy is a great copy shop with some Hindu personality. The self-service machines are sturdy and don't jam. The prices are low-average. The workers are friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is pleasant and a nice change from the chain office supply stores' copy centers. There is metered parking on the street nearby.
The Vedanta center in Carmichael offers many different activities for the devotee. Indian Hindus are frequent visitors as well as non-Indians. Everyone is welcome. There are lectures, meditation periods, vespers services, Upanishads readings, special services for religious holidays, and more. The grounds are gorgeous, with gardens and ponds. The atmosphere is one of relaxation and seriousness. This is a wonderful place to visit, and there is a bookstore as well.
PROS: beautiful grounds
This is a good, small health food store, with very good products at high prices. (The fact of it being in a resort town is probably what makes the prices high.) Everything here is standard with no surprises. Located in a strip mall, the atmosphere is average and fine. The workers are friendly and helpful. This is a good, middle-of-the-road sort of health food store.
Sierra Office Supply, located on Bishops main drag, has a good selection of office supplies, for an independent store, and even has a furniture annex. I like their selection of pens. Prices are medium-reasonable but not as low as a big chains prices. The workers are helpful and friendly. There are copy machines for self-serve use. They also have a big mail order catalog.
PROS: good selection
CONS: medium prices
Gopher Glen Apple Farm is an awesome place to buy apples because they're fresh. Also, they allow you to taste each variety of apple currently in season. They sell only the current crops of apples and provide tips concerning which apples are best-suited for different purposes, such as baking. The also offer a gift shop with many apple-related and food-related items. They sell fresh-pressed cider also. Their prices are fair. This place is very special and located in beautiful, scenic See Canyon.
PROS: delicious apples
This is an awesome spot for both the free petting zoo and the foods offered for sale, such as fruits and vegetables and pies. The petting zoo is varried ,with goats, chickens, emus, pigs, a small cow, horses, and more. In a beautiful area, a short drive from Avila Beach, this is a great place to get a feel for local Central Coast character and is always bustling with people and activity. There are seasonal attractions such as huge pumpkins near Halloween and BBQ corn offered for sale when the corn is plentiful. Avila Barn is just a lot of fun.
PROS: goats, food
Book Warehouse on Mammoths main drag is a generic remainder bookstore with lots of "classic" titles. It's small and cramped. The staff doesn't seem very interested in books. Located within a outlet-type strip mall, the atmosphere is sterile and lacks any type of style. The target customer would probably be the casual tourist looking for something to read while not skiing. There aren't any good finds here--not recommended for real readers.
Spellbinders has a medium-sized selection of new books with some focus on local titles. The staff is helpful and friendly. The store is clean and has a spacious feeling to it. The selection could be wider. The children's book section includes some puppets and stuffed animals. Bookmarks, journals, magazines, and book lights are also sold. There are occasional special events.
In back is a coffee shop and small video/DVD rental area. Local art is displayed.
This is Bishop's only used bookstore, which makes it special. It's small but has a pretty good selection. It has two rooms. They offer children's programs and have a good children's section for their size. The books in the adult areas are somewhat disorganized. If you bring books there to sell, there can be a long wait (days) until you hear back from them.
PROS: the only one in town
The Sac Yoga Center is a great place to do yoga because it's clean, well-lit, and comfortable. The teachers are friendly and knowledgeable and make beginners feel very welcome. The location has plenty of free parking, and the Sierra 2 Center building has nice grounds with beautiful trees and plants. It's in a quiet, safe neighborhood.
