I've been here a couple of times to buy oboe reeds - the staff is always really helpful but they don't always have what I need - therefore, I'd strongly recomment calling before stopping in; they're always happy to order things but their selection focuses more on breadth than depth (though I imagine for popular instruments like guitar they have everything you could possibly need). Staff is very knowledgable and pleasant. Note that the store is now on Arch between 10th & 11th (used to be nearer 8th st, hence the name). And I second the earlier reviewer, parking & traffic are hellish down there, particularly on weekends - walk there if you can.
PROS: Helpful staff, able to get anything (though may take a few days)
CONS: Traffic/parking a challenge
I got a great haircut here at short notice & was really pleased with it. I made the appointment slightly last minute & had a very small window of time since I only had an hour between finishing work & having to leave for a flight. Toppers got me in & out quickly & the cut looked great, I got tons of compliments. A great option if you work in center city & good, efficient service in a hurry. Staff is very professional & the decor is upscale without being too boudoir-girly. Struck me as more of a salon than a dayspa but I didn't the the whole place, maybe the treatment rooms are more luxurious.
PROS: Very efficient service, good results
CONS: Decor more conducive to beauty services than spa services
This sunshine-yellow store makes buying veggies fun again - it's well laid out with prepared foods (salads, fresh squeezed juices, gourmet salad dressings) at the front, and ample selection of fruits, tons of leafy greens, nuts, berries, and cheeses. Prices are very reasonable & the variety for such a tiny shop is impressive. My favorites are the blocks of fresh tofu ($1 for 2 entree-size pieces), tubs of sun-dried plum tomatoes, and their various pre-washed lettuces. One downside: they only accept cash (but recently installed an ATM inside).
PROS: Fabulous selection, great decor, good layout
CONS: Cash only
My family has been making pilgrimages to this Italian Market classic for decades - my mother routinely carries boxes of their excellent frozen ravioli back to North Carolina. They have a wide variety of fresh and frozen pastas from fresh tomato-basil whole wheat linguini to squid-ink spaghetti to frozen stuffed shells. Service always efficient & friendly.
PROS: Selection, quality, service
Just a couple of blocks south of Rittenhouse square, this tiny shop has a huge variety of hardware & home supplies; and a very charming dog that lolls about in the front. I've gone to them for lightbulbs, key copies, hammers/nails & found their prices reasonable and their advice invaluable - staff is very efficient and friendly; would recommend to anyone in the area for odds & ends - parking in that area can be difficult though, so better to walk.
PROS: Selection, service, location
CONS: Limited parking in area
I love nice clothes and appreciate all the beautiful things at Knit Wit, but I really detest the attitude of the shopkeepers. They gush over their stable of regular clients & seem to have a nice rapport with them, so they clearly have some social aptitude, but every time I go in someone follows me around everywhere, apparently to make sure I don't steal anything. It is absolutely absurd - after a few visits like this (I thought one time the saleslady might actually stand in the dressing room to make sure I didn't stuff a pair of Citizens jeans into my tiny bag), I refuse to go in anymore. There are plenty of other lovely local boutiques that manage to not make me feel like a criminal.
PROS: Nice stable of designers
CONS: Hovering staff
We've taken our beloved aging automobile to Mr. Lei several times in the past year for different issues each time & he has worked wonders in very short time - once was for a draw on the battery, once was for a broken window, and once for malfunctioning a/c - each time we had the car back on the same day, fixed perfectly, for what we considered to be very reasonable prices. Would definitely recommend him to anyone for repairs - location is also convenient to center city.
PROS: Good value, variety of problems fixed quickly
We used Ken & his ensemble for our wedding & they were fabulous. Very flexible, absolutely delightful to work with leading up to the event. Went out of their way to meet with us, give us opportunities to see them perform at numerous venues. And on the day, they played beautifully - even an impromptu Zeppelin riff when the Best Man mentioned it in his speech. Played a great variety of music including latin, big band/swing, slow music. We thought they were wonderful & would recommend them to anyone. They also came highly recommended by our wedding planner, who has worked with tons of area bands & she says Kenny is her favorite. Also great value relative to the other (less talented) bands we interviewed.
PROS: Talented, great to work with, good value
I used Adolf Bieker for my wedding day hair - plus all my bridesmaids & my mother. They did beautiful work & we were really pleased with how everything turned out. Everyone was very sweet, but the operation seemed very disorganized. I made my appointment months in advance, called to confirm a month before the wedding & they had no record of the booking - we went through all the details again, then a week later I got yet another call to confirm, then another one a week later - each time with slightly confused/incorrect details. I faxed schedules numerous times & eventually it got worked out but it did seem to take more effort than it should have for a place with such a great reputation. On the wedding day, all our hair looked gorgeous but all the hair staff were running late even though they'd demanded we arrive early because they claimed to have appointments right after us - we did get done in time, but it was more rushed than I would have liked. All the time while we were waiting people came over to check on us & see how we were doing, which was very sweet but not very helpful. However, given the superior results I'd definitely recommend them - just book well in advance & make sure to allow plenty of time. Prices are high but in the end I thought worth it.
PROS: Fantastic results
CONS: Staff obsequious but unhelpful; high prices; disorganization
The address below is incorrect - DiBrunos' new location it is actually at 1730 Chestnut Street and it's fantastic, huge, spacious, with great selection - though you will pay for it. Completely yuppified version of the Italian Market classic, but gorgeous & very accessible to Center City business & residents. Their staff are amazingly informed on their vast assortment of imported cheeses and delicious prepared foods (from couscous to stuffed artichokes to panini with nutella & banana). They have a few cafe tables for breakfast or lunch and a swanky coffee/espresso bar at the front. A must for visitors or residents.
PROS: Selection, location, service, seating, design/decor
CONS: High prices, more yuppy that in the original
