Possibly the best-known salon on the best-known shopping street in the city, bring your best credit card along but expect a lot in return. Of course, they can ply you with the best in shampoos, conditioners, gels, and various styling products, but what you really come here for is the personnel, and I think they lead the way in local stylings. You'll keep returning.
As the name suggests, located on grittier NW21st instead of its glittery cousin a couple blocks away, the shop reflects that with edgy, funky gifts that people in your life will really appreciate. Emphasizing items for the home and self, come here to find that perfect piece of pottery, candle, scarf, lotion, and many other things just a bit askew from what you'd expect.
I'm not sure why cigar stores must also have masses of magazines, but they often do, and Rich's Cigar Store -- one of the oldest such stores in the nation, dating back over a century -- has thousands of both. Honestly, if there's a cigar or a magazine that exists (legally, anyway) and they don't have it here, then you just might win a prize.
When the West fails you, come here to seek the East -- in ambiance, books, music, video, gifts, holistic medicine, and services. If you're in the mood to learn more about yoga or meditation, you'll find everything you could possibly need here. Even if you know nothing about such things and want to learn more, you can take a class here to do just that.
The epitome of a local music shop, and the polar opposite of where most people buy music these days (Walmart, BestBuy, etc), come here to find local music that you'd really have to search to find elsewhere. Not that they're exclusive to locals, particular indies, since they have the usual suspects as well, but that other stuff you can find anywhere and is not what makes this place distinctive.
When it comes time to equip a kitchen with ceramics, linens, glasses, crystal, cutlery and the rest, and you're bored with what you know, go here and see things from a European perspective. I went in looking for crystal champagne glasses suitable for an anniversary present, and I came away with my quarry, and not overly light in the wallet for it.
Not your largest flower shop, but one that will give your value for your money. Think roses, plants, tropical, gourmet baskets, gift baskets, bouquets -- they'll even deliver for a reasonable rate. I went in looking for an arrangement on the cheap, and they were able to put one together for me on the spot in less than 15 minutes.
Nestled among the glittering stores of NW23rd, if you are a skateboarder or snowboarder, then you need to know about this place. Besides boards, you'll find skate-appropriate clothing, goggles, footwear, and even gifts for that special skater in your life. They also hold regular events in which skating pros show off, give talks, and participate in giveaways (and autographs, of course).
Located right on trendy NW23rd, this is the place to go if you're sick of the mega toys stores that seem too large and impersonal. Not to say that the place is small -- they boast around twenty thousand toys and games -- but here you'll find unique items not apt to be found in those other places. Not much for electronics, so if that's what you want then shop elsewhere.
When furnishing a new house or upgrading an old one, you'll want the bathroom to be modern and the best that it can be for the space. That's exactly what A-Ball can do for you with everything from tubs, sinks, showers, commodes, faucets, and any other piece of hardware found in the bathroom. Reasonable rates, friendly service, and most major manufacturers.
