I'm not a big salon person and it kills me to pay lots of money to have someone cut my easy-to-manage hair, so I'm a once or twice a year kinda gal. Therefore, I don't always know what kind of cut would look good on me. Envee is reasonably priced, accepts walkins, and the stylist knew just what to do to my hair to frame my face.
Like many of the better Greek restaurants in Astoria, Elias Corner has excellent whole grilled fish. I don't even think they have menus because what they're serving is the day's catch. Fresh and delicious!
Rapture is one of the few non-pub, non-Euro-scene watering holes in Astoria. There's comfortable seating and good drinks at fair prices. Only drawback for me is that the music is too loud, but that comes with the territory.
I've been eating at and ordering delivery from Ubol's kitchen for years. I only gave it 3 stars because the things they do well, they do really well, but the things they don't do well on are pretty bad.
Good: Panang chicken curry, whole fried fish, pad thai, and all the standards. The crispy duck with basil is awesome. Their sticky rice with mango is also quite good.
Not so good: never get the mixed seafood or mixed vegetable dishes.
I've been going to Kebab Cafe for about six years. I am never disappointed. Ali, the owner, is a genius. He does wonderful things with lamb, whole grilled fish (my favorite) with roasted vegetables, and other meats. I'm sure the vegetarian stuff is good too but I'm a meat eater! There's a menu, but order Ali's specials. And always get the mixed appetizer platter with hummous, babaganoush, falafel, and this amazing crispy fried green stuff, all sprinkled with Za'atar and served with warm pita--fantastic!
The seating area is quite small so it's not great for big groups.
Every time I go to Taverna Kyclades, I have to get the peasant salad and the greek style shrimp (broiled in bubbly tomato/bell peppers and melty feta). They have indoor and outdoor seating, which is especially nice during the summer. This place is a favorite with locals--on a Friday or Saturday night the line for a table can go halfway down the block!
