City People's Garden Store always has an excellent selection of plants, especially perennials, shrubs and annuals. They also have trees that are suited for our smaller city lots. They carry high quality tools and a nice variety of organic fertilizers and soils. I also love their selection of pottery, books, cards, and gifty items.
The nursery is well organized, tidy, and the plants always look great.
They also have a Landscape Design and Construction department, so if you need help with your yard, you can hire their designer to come to your home for a consultation.
Bamford & Bamford has an extremely large selection of pottery in all shapes, colors, and sizes. They also have a showroom that contains fountains made with the pots. Their prices are higher than you would pay at a nursery, but if you are looking for a particular unusual shape and color, you can probably find it here.
They also carry some unusual plants that are particularly suited for containers, but the prices are higher than you would pay at a nursery.
Peninsula Gardens is a large garden center with lots to see. Prices were average to high.
Strengths: Large selection of shrubs and trees, houseplants, decor
Weaknesses: I wasn't impressed by their selection of perennials and annuals
Very Small Nursery. Good for the local neighborhood. Nice for a quick stop to grab supplies and a few plants. Prices are on the high side. Owners are young and friendly.
Fantastic Nursery- best nursery in Tacoma to find fruit trees and veggie starts, conifers and Japanese Maples. Very well organized and tidy. Their perennial section is not their strength. Their staff is very knowledgeable.
Beautiful Greenhouse- Fabulous houseplants and home decor, large stock of plants, nice cafe. I find that they have a lot of variety, but the prices are on the high end of the scale. I've found better annuals and perennials at other nurseries, but they have excellent shrubs and trees.
Well-staffed and very organized and clean.
The crowds on the Spring weekends can make the experience less than enjoyable. It's great for a destination nursery, especially for taking visitors, but for most of my purchases I'd rather visit my neighborhood nursery.
This nursery is a great place to buy plants in the Tacoma area. It has the feel of a neighborhood nursery. They carry a large variety of plants in the Spring and Summer, but I can find some gems in the Fall and Winter too. They are a good source for organic soils and fertilizers, gardening supplies, seeds, and garden decor. They also seem to have the best prices on pottery. Their staff is knowledgeable and friendly.
The gift shop is in an old house and has home decor and furniture leaning towards shabby chic. It is very charming and neatly decorated.
