I heard raves and raves about Alon's and finally went. Totally disappointed. The sandwiches were mediocre, not that this fact had any impact on pricing. I would eat at Panera Bread a million times before I would go back here.
No idea about the pastries though...
Caramba is a fun, tasty treat in the northern part of the Highlands. Tons of margaritas on the list. It is not much to look at, but with a good menu at reasonable prices, who cares!
Street parking readily available nearby
The Marriott Park Ridge is a very comfortable hotel located in somewhat out of the way Park Ridge near Montvale in northern New Jersey.
The rooms are standard Marriott fare, but very comfy and well air conditioned. A concierge lounge is available for their frequent traveler crowd, and it has a decent selection of snacks in the evening, and an expansive breakfast selection.
The rooms were pricey, over $200 per night, but there are not a whole lot of choices around there.
This hotel is billed as a full service hotel - it is anything but. The property is laid out like a motel - you drive up to your room, and there are two or three levels to each building - not very convenient if you have a lot of luggage and a broken leg like I did
The hotel is actually a time share, and the staff for regular hotel guests is bare bones. The gift shop - the only place to get a bottle of water - closes at 5. No restaurant, no bellstaff.
The rooms are nice and spacious, with full kitchen facilities, washer/ dryer, a separate living and sleeping area. The air conditioning systems are excellent and the bedrooms have ceiling fans so you will never be hot in your room even when it is 110 outside.
So if you're looking for comfort but few amenities/ services this is the place for you. But it is NOT a good place for business travelers.
Lilette's is a charming little restaurant located in the Garden District of New Orleans. The French bistro food is always delicious, the service top notch. My family's favorite is always the gnocchi appetizer.
Not for the faint at wallet, save Lilette for a special occasion
This is the NYC annex of a Phoenix restaurant. Don't go there for ambience - it is very crowded and noisy, feels like a nightclub a little, but the food will outweigh all the negatives. Not for the faint of tummies, the food is spicy. Wash everything down with a delicious margaraita perhaps, but by all means, save some room for the sopapillas. They are delicious!
Whenever I have a minor home repair, I go to Highland Hardware. The prices are not as competitive as the big home stores such as Home Depot, but for a quick onesie twosie this store can't be beat. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, plus they have a friendly kitty on the counter to boot.
I spent thousands of dollars on framing there over a course of a couple of years when I was gearing up for a new house and lots of space and not one time did they disappoint. I saw a variety of "consultants" and they always offered me good and creative suggestions. I love BFS and refer many out of town people to them. Framing is not cheap, but they are competitive even with the so called discount stores like Binders. Highly recommended!
Festivity is a fun little store in the heart of the VA/ Highlands area. Mostly stocked with home knick knacks, they have tons of adorable gift ideas from cocktail napkins to jewelry and always a great seasonal selection of decorations and ornaments.
I have never been into the store, but I have received a number of arrangements and they never disappoint. The flowers are always fresh and beautiful and artfully arranged. You'd never get a rose and carnation bouquet from this place!
