This is the place to go if you like to buy CDs (they have some vinyl) in a real shop, not online. They also sell DVDs. While the DVD selection isn't huge, I feel like they carefully pick their selection to match the taste of the neighborhood they're in, Dupont Circle. They have the best classical CD selection in DC, ... since Tower went out of business, anyway. After all these years, I still love shopping at Melody. The staff is always knowledgeable too.
This is a great newsstand with a wide selection of magazines and newspapers -- major U.S. dailies, international dailies from Europe and the Middle East, and they can print newspapers on demand from a huge international list. They are very friendly and helpful. I'm glad this place is here.
One of the bigger newsstands in DC with good variety, but watch the date of the issue you pick off the shelf. They are terrible about keeping current newspapers on the shelves and weeding out yesterday's news. It used to be a lot better but I think ownership changed hands. Still, if you want a foreign newspaper or magazine, you should check to see if they have it. Staff is usually very helpful but not always so knowledgeable.
I have gone here for years becaue their Mexican food is so good. The last time I went (today) I had the salmon and it was excellent, perfectly prepared. However, the service was awful. The server got one of our orders wrong and long story short, never brought out the right thing, so only one of us got to eat. To be fair, they comped us because we explained how the server not only botched our order but didn't seem to care much... but that truly that didn't make up for the terrible experience. That's just one experience out of many. As for all the past visits I can honestly say the service was never outstanding though never this bad.
This is a great, new little bookstore. If they don't have what you're looking for they will order it and get it to you fast. They have shipped for me and only charged me the actual cost. They provide friendly, personal service. It's too small to stock everything for everyone, as with any small independent bookstore, it's fun to walk in and see what the owner has chosen to highlight for her customers.
This is a great newsstand with an incredible selection of magazines *and* newspapers. It carries most major dailies plus a lot of foreign newspapers in many languages. It's inside the Shops at 2000 Pennsylvania so it's invisible from the street but very conveniently located if you know it's there. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If they don't have what you want, they can get it for you.
