Marukai is a small Asian market where you can find a lot of Asian goodies from drinks, snacks, and candies. They also see fish, rice, and fruits. You should check this place out.

I like coming to this grocery store because it feels like you're going to another country or on vacation. They sell many Japanese foodstuffs and Hawaiian goods that are hard to find on the mainland. I highly recommend buying your rice here because they have a good selection.

It's right off Balboa/ 163 and has 3 different bldgs- the supermarket, the home living store, and the $1.55 store. I think back in the day these were the $.98 store, then it moved to $1.50. Now it's 1.55, tough economy!!
Like all Japanese markets, it's super clean, organized and a very pleasant shopping experience. The workers are all polite and helpful. The prices seem to be on the higher side compared to 99 Ranch or Korean Zion Mkt, but that's typical with Japanese stores compared to other Asian stores- there's a quality difference. The store is smaller so inventory must be replaced quicker, more likely to be fresher. Similar to Trader Joe size compared to Vons or Ralphs.

I especially dig the $1.55 store. Japanese items tend to be really on the "cute" feminine side, and these items are much better than the ones you'd find at the Dollar Tree and the like stores. Some items are more than $1.55 and it's cute, at the register the cashier will double check to make sure that you saw the price tag difference.

The market does have a fee membership available, but you can still buy without paying it. You simply get more discounts with the membership, like bookstore membership card.

I am not sure of the major differences b/w here and Mitsuwa. Mitsuwa seems slightly bigger and they have a food court. I think prices would be comparable.

Clean, medium sized, and well-designed market. The fish looks less appetizing/fresh than Mitsuwa's. Unlike Mitsuwa however, is that they don't have a place to eat. They sell reheatable food, sushi without a place to eat it. The price is affordable. Would recommend to others.
