I have to say that The BoilingPot is one of the best shabu shabu restaurant you can go around this area. The decor is nice and modern. One word, Clean. You get a plate of a variety of vegetables with any entree. The best part is the beef because its really tender. Beef into ponzu sauce = Heaven!! i don't think that you can get the quality of the beef at any other shabu shabu. Servers are very attentive, my friends and i have never gone over a minute without rice and drinks. What else can i say, Great customer service and great food.

This is my second time to eat at this restaurant, as far as shabu-shabu goes, the food is excellent, their vegetables are very fresh and the price is reasonable compared to other Japanese restaurant in Pasadena area. The employees are very friendly and provide good service.
I saw the previous comments about this place in my opinion, there is no truth and reality to it, and i think it is totally biased.
If you want good food, great service, and affordable, you should try this restaurant you won't regret it.

Pros: Food, Service, Parking, Price

vegetables are sooooo old, frozen fish soooooooooooo old and not edible!, appetizers are pre-made and nasty. theres an item called shiso wrapped spicy tuna that has noooooooooo shiso in it, or wrapped with it (because they are cutting corners and thinking that customers wont notice that we are missing it), white rice tooo soggy not edible, there is nothing good about this food.
the menu said "enjoyable japanese experience", lemme assure you there is nothing Japanese about this food that they serve. shabu shabu has to be with the freshest ingredients to be enjoyed, and this restaurant totally ignores that just to take your money!!! $75 that i wasted i seriously want my money back! i should report this restaurat to health dept. the way they handle is nasty, and the food they serve shouldnt be aloowed there!!!! im sooooooooooooo mad!

Cons: everything, uh food?

I was driving on Del Mar while I saw this unique Japanese shabu shabu restaurant. I thought I shall give it a try. Thanks god, it wasn't disappointed me at all when I sat down at the bar where there's a TV available for viewing and the service was great plus people are so friendly. The most important thing is the food was delicious and healthy, and I love the sauces that they made, it was so good!

I Went to the restaurant recently and I was impressed with the service. The people there are friendly, food is excellent, environment is very relaxing, and they have more choices now in appetizers and desserts, and of course the price is very reasonable.
This restaurant has definitely improved a lot since the last time i visited this place.

We love shabu shabu and were so optimistic when trying this place. What a disappointment! The food was mediocre and the service absolutely lacking. When we arrived there were two empty (but uncleared) tables, but it took two requests and 20 minutes for just one of the tables to be cleared. We watched in awe as this inefficiency(people waiting (and sometimes leaving) while tables lay covered in dirty dishes) was repeated throughout the time we were there. Even the counter, when empty of people, remained uncleared. We had to asked repeatedly for anything we wanted. In fact, a simple bottle of sake took FOUR requests and another 20 minutes. While the food wasn't bad, we were hoping for more. There is no reason to return to this place...

My husband and I went to this place when it first opened. I admit to this being my only shabu-shabu experience, but I did expect a little more flavor to the food. The initial broth provided was just water with a small piece of kelp floating in it (and the water looked as though it had been sitting around for a while as well). no matter how much of the seasonings provided I added, I had no luck in bringing flavor to the meal. We were very disappointed and will not go again.

This place is not bad -- you can order the small, medium or large portions (beef, chicken, turkey, seafood, veggie, or a combination), and the prices range from about $11 to $16. Don't come if you're really hungry! When you boil your food, it comes out pretty small in the end. It's hot, too. The steam from the boiling water hits you in the face sometimes. Great for cold days when you want something light and fairly healthy.

Traditional Japanese food has little/no additives, it is naturally simple with maybe some ponju sauce or soy to give flavor. Every shabu restaurant is different, some season with sake, some with kelp. The Boiling Pot offers delicious, healthy food for less than simular places in the area. Entrees are designed for one person, and if you eat everything on your plate, you'll be full. The architecture is modern, with stainless steel, cherry wood, and granite table tops. Make a reservation for weekend nights to avoid 'slow' service -- there is only about 6 tables and 10-15 bar seats. I am recognized as a valued customer, like all repeat visitors. The steam can't be helped, as there is a boiling pot in front of you (duh). If you can't take the heat, try sushi, but steam is nothing to complain about when it comes to the Boiling Pot.

I am amazed that this restaurant even has any customers. The so called broth was boiling water with a piece of seaweed in it. Not much taste there. We ordered the medium beef plate and the vegetable plate. The vegetable plate had parsley, tons of cabbage, very few slices of carrot, a couple small broccoli pieces, a few mushrooms, some noodles (which were difficult to get out of the boiling water and onto your plate) and not much more. Even with the condiments, the so called dinner had little taste and little food. They give you unlimited rice; so what! The electric burners were right in your face; be sure to wear a moisturizer, so your skin doesn't dry out.

We went pretty soon after the restaurant opened, and maybe they have changed, but the broth was a very simple hot water (that had been warming for a while) with a small piece of seaweed in it which I could not get to have much taste even with all the condiments provided. It would have been cheaper to boil some beef at home.

I am a big fan of Shabu Shabu, and was disappointed with The Boiling Pot. The portions are small and it is more expensive than other Shabu Shabu restaurants. It definetly did not seem as authentic as others I have been to. I would
