This place reminds me of similar old book stores in Paris and London. It just has a cool vibe. They buy books at a fair price and you can definitely pickup good paperbacks for cheap. It's a great place to get cool coffee table books. Going to Moe's is a quintessential Berkeley experience.

One of those old Berkeley businesses with friendly people and an eclectic selection. Right on Telegraph near Aomeba. I recommend it for the total Berkeley experience.

Moe's is a Berkeley landmark. Cody's is flashier, Barnes and Noble is bigger, but Moe's has everything you want, the lowest price, great staff, and a great trade policy. Cody's is where you go when you need a nice coffee table book for someone. Barnes and Noble is where you buy a book about some war that is on the #1 Bestseller list for your father in law. But Moe's is where you go to feel like there are other people in the world who appreciate GOOD books. The ambience is more intellectual, more curious. There are used and new books mixed in together, so you can find what you are looking for and then decide whether you need the new one or whether the used one will do. There are tables with displayed books that have, more than once, introduced me to something great. I buy used there, then come back with anything I decide isn't worth holding on to forever, they give me a fair price, and I go home with some more used books. I have had my wallet stolen and the most valuable thing in it were the Moe's bucks.

Moes Books is very easy to spot with their large red and white striped awning right above their storefront entrance. They have a huge collection of new books as well as a huge collection of used books and books that are no longer in print. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. They go out of their way to help you find a book and even special order it for you if they dont have it in stock.

This is my favorite bookstore in Berkeley. Possessing such a wide variety of books, in my opinion, this store has everything that one could ever ask for and at a better price than large chain bookstores. The only problem may be finding that desired book.

For a (primarily) used book store, Moe's is huge, with four levels of carefully classified volumes. It's a fun place to go for the sheer number of things they have. The fact that it's right near the Berkeley campus means that it gets a lot of academic books--but also that they are a bit picked-over. The staff here is great--they know books and they know their stock. The prices are decent, but don't shop here unless you have an iron will or money to spend--you'd be surprised at how many interesting things you'll suddenly "need."
AC Transit #40, close to 51.

PROS: Staff, selection!
CONS: Telegraph Ave. parking, etc.

Four floors of books. Some new and discounted books are on the lower floors, but just about everything else is used. Fiction (and most non-fiction) is half the cover price; if you can find an early printing, you can get some titles for just pennies! For those seeking rare antique books, on the top floor is Moes Antiquarian Shop, where books are kept behind glass and out of reach of my very meager pocketbook

If you have books to get rid of, Moes will give you cash or store credit. What was collecting dust on your bookshelf yesterday could be someone elses treasure tomorrow. Because of the constant inflow and outflow of books, the staff cant really tell you if a particular title is in stock, so you wont get the intimate, escort-you-to-the-bookshelf service you might receive in some other stores. But if youre looking for a book on a particular topic, the front desk staff can effectively suggest related subject areas that you should look in. If you cant find your title of choice, you can usually find a related book on the same subject thatll meet your needs.

PROS: four floors of books in variety of subject areas
CONS: distant & curt staff, hard to find specific titles

Moe's has a lot of books, comparably priced to the used books at Black Oaks beyond the other side of the UCB campus and to Green Apple in San Francisco. Moe's is more likely to have a specialist academic title than any other Bay Area bookstore. The used bookstores on Solano Avenue have lower prices (and many remaindered titles).

It has many tables of remaindered books on each of its four levels, comparably priced to those at A Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books in San Francisco.

I have always found the staff surly and condescending, though the atmosphere is better without the stench of Moe's cigars that used to linger.

PROS: large selection
CONS: staff attitude

So it's disorganized. So the sales staff is less than helpful. So what? If you can find it, the book you're looking for in order to finish that paper or complete that collection is in here somewhere. And it's probably cheaper than you thought it would be, too. Set aside an hour or so and wander around the multiple floors. Dedicated book-lovers will love its used selection, if not its barn-like atmoshpere.

Not only is this a large, several storied book store with almost any book you can think of but they have a good selection of old books. They buy used and put the excellent older ones aside for special consideration. However, one can find older books in good condition just by browsing a shelf or two.

Moe's is a fantastic place to hang out, buy new mainstream or more indie books, or just gawk at the amazing selection of used books. Their discount sections are great and their new books section is huge. Moe's is sometimes overlooked for its fancier neighbor Cody's, but its four floors of books and incredibly nice employees make it my favorite.

PROS: great selection, prices, service
CONS: some sections have used and new books mixed together

Moe's definitely has style. It's not a giant book dealer, but a good enough one for your average consumer. It has large selections of pretty much everything you need. They have computer database system to help you find anything. Very friendly staff. Also, the trade slips come in very very useful for used books.

PROS: If your tired of the cookie cutter giant blah bookstores
CONS: none

Moe's is a Berkekely landmark. And it has been serving the Bay Area for many decades. It looks small from the outside, but this store is quite large as it has many floors and a basement level.

This is no Barnes & Noble cookie-cutter setup. Moe's has character and attracts all kinds of patrons. If you are looking for a comfortable bookstore to browse or just waste time in, Moe's is a suitable fit for you.

Just look for the Red and White Awning.

PROS: Hard-to-find books, used books, art publications, antique books
CONS:

the sales staff is really helpful, and nice, too. the prices are extremely reasonable, and there are always books there that you might not find in other bookstores. it's also a good place for people watching...go to the foreign language section, that fronts the street, and just hang out by the open window and look down below at the people walking past.
